I just finished reading the Frederic Patenaude book on raw food and I'm not sure how I feel about not being able to eat bananas with strawberries, blueberries and pineapple, or, avocados with nuts.
So, I'm just wondering how many of you follow those principles or do you just eat whatever you want as long as it's raw and still feel amazing?

I understand food combining, but don't concern myself much with it. I eat raw, and if I don't feel well after eating e.g. the food stays in my stomach way too long without digesting properly, I will not eat that food in that combination again. Generally, my foods are very simple and I have no problems digesting. I would be very careful about food combinations, if I had a digestive disease I was trying to heal.

As long as it all digests fine, don't worry about. If it doesn't digest fine, then don't do that combination again until you feel like you've built up your digestive fire more.

No. I LOVE banana and any fruit smoothies, it digests fine for me, that's what I go by.
Although once I had canteloupe and then a bunch of sun-dried tomatoes and then a bunch of dates and then I felt sick....so now I just try to not be all over the map.

Nope, not a bit. As long as it's raw, tastes good and doesn't make me feel ill then it's fair game in my book. :D

Yep, I absolutely do but hey - I know that our bodies are all unique. I follow the same principles I followed before my raw vegan journey began. For me, even with raw vegan living- still not a good thing for me to dabble too much with things like mixing fruits and protein or even combining certain fruit sweets together. My sister downs green smoothies with no problem whereas I know better than to mix certain things together and have no problem if I have to have my veggie and fruit combinations separately. But you just gotta be true to you... your body will let you know what works for it and what doesn't ...

I don't do well with food combining because I'm still new at this and trying to enjoy my food as much as possible so as not to be tempted to go back to cooked...
However - I may start thinking about this more as time goes by, because I do find myself feeling bloated, fatigued, and even a bit constipated at times and I suspect that it must be the combinations of foods that I have put in my stomach. I need to start a food diary I guess.

I sort of do. Not because I'm worried about a bad food combination, but because I'm craving something simplistic such as one type of fruit. When I crave a certain fruit, I eat only that fruit. If I eat a gourmet vegetable/nut dish I usually always follow it up with dates because the gourmet meal doesn't sit well with me on it's own.

When I was at the Vipassana meditation retreat, I sat in meditation after breakfast.
When I combined raw tahini with fruit for breakfast, it didn't sit as well in my tummy as when I had JUST fruit for breakfast. However, it wasn't so awful, either.
I think that there may be some validity to food combining dogma for some people, or for some situations, but I don't personally feel that it is critical enough, and not nearly as important as sticking to RAW! :)

No, but it's concerning itself with me lately. lol. I've been juice fasting a lot and mono eating. I think my system is moving in another direction again. Similar to the concept of getting ill after slipping & eating something cooked you used to eat for many years no problems. Now I'm finding I do feel some digestion discomfrot when I combine certain raw foods, whereas when I first started eating raw foods I could pretty much eat whateva I wanted. I think it depends on your individual body and where you are in healing process. Generally though I don't concern myself with it too much. Just listen to my body's signals. Hope that helps. Peace.

I just wanted to add Alicia, in reference to reading a book about not being able to combine bananas with all the other fruits you mentioned. Well, if you have no issue with combining them I wouldn't worry about it. I'd pay closer attention to how you're feeling and how your body is doing. I think your intuition will lead the way.

I read about food combining in several different books and then became curious about it. But, what really made me more conscious about f.c. is the fact that if I have persay avocado and nuts together I get a bad stomacheache.
Following these guidelines have helped me a lot :
1.) start out by eating the lightest part of your meal first ex:
If, eating fruit eat the fruit first, followed by the veggies, and then followed with a little nuts/nut based dish
2.) avoid eating savory and sweet foods right after each other..give your stomache some time to process/digest one food first and then have the other 10-15 min. later.
3.) avoid mixing to many fats in one meal: coconut meat, nuts, and avocados together-this is a direct recipe for stomache disaster :)
Looking at a basic food combining chart/posting it on your fridge will subconciously remind you of which foods are best to combine, thus, promoting better digestion or if it is your case less stomache aches/problems.
Good luck, enjoy your food, be happy.

I love food combining and I feel much better when I follow its principles, but I agree with the others who say do what works best for you. Everyone is different. :)

I instinctively food combine, I know what works together for me and I try to keep my meals simple and fresh. I would recommend being careful with what you combine with nuts and avocados.

Thank you everyone, for your responses and great advice. This is very helpful.
I've been 99.9% raw for one week now and my health seems to be improving, now that I'm eating more calories. But the moment I don't get enough, I go right back to having a sore throat with the cough, mucous etc. I'm slowly finding my way, along with your help.
I really appreciate all of you for responding. Thanks again.
