So, I've been sprouting some wheat berries. It was going great, I had opportunities to rinse them a lot, but after late afternoon yesterday I forgot to rinse them at all. I was just really tired and distracted that whole evening. So, they went that evening and night without a rinsing, and they were so close to being finished. They kept sprouting more and more and this morning the wheat berries were sort of stuck together and there was a fine, white fuzzy mold at least on the top layer of the jar and it smelled kinda of sweet and fruity.

Are my wheat berries ruined? Do I have to chuck the lot and start from scratch? (sorry, I don't have the book to consult right now) :(

Always make sure they are not crowded in whatever you sprout them in. Rinsing is So important. I would just start another bach.

Are you using them for the sprouted wheatberries, or for wheatgrass?

If you were going to do the berries for a bread - I'd toss them.

If you were going to grow for grass, I'd rinse them super well to get all the gunk off them and get them on the soil and be very very careful not to overwater, just mist/sprinkle 2x a day and let them get a dry between times, that should eliminate the mold.

I had a wheat grass try get white mold around the roots.....I set it out in the sun for a while.....and clipped a bit higher than usual at harvest - no probs.

I'd throw this batch out.
Next time, add a couple drops of food-grade hydrogen peroxide to your soak water, it will kill mold spores on the surface of the wheat.
And remember, now is the season for wild grass! Don't fret if you can't grow wheatgrass, all grasses are edible and can be juiced.

What about mold on sunflower seeds? I just started sprouting some 2 days ago, and after the first night there was some mold growing on a few. I threw those out. Are they all supposed to never touch eachother? Do seeds normally mold in the ground and stop growing or would you never know and they keep growing. I'm not sure what is normal. I wanted to sproud sunflowers because the store never has any in stock anymore and they taste so great.

Thank you for the replies! I ended up throwing it out and starting anew and being real careful to rinse frequently (though I was before until I forgot) and I put less in the jar so there's no crowding. They're sprouting well. (I'm going to be using them for crackers)

I use hydrogene peroxyde food grade. I soak them a few hours with water and a little bit of peroxyde. Then i will place them in my tray and spray a little bit more of peroxyde and will do the sprouting. I have an automatic sprouter.

I did notice sadly from my last experienc that once the plant is out and look all straight up, it is time to harvest them. I was so busy, i let them grow inside the sprouter like 2-3 days more and they started to turn yellow and one tray had mold.

Hope you figure out what you need
