I am spending close to 120 a month on Kombucha. That is 16 ounces a d for 4 dollars a pop. I would buy a "mother" from someone if they are willing to sell one. Please, this is getting crazy. I love it too much to give it up. I feel wonderful when I drink it. Though, if I don't get a scoby then I will have to stop drinking it!

You don't actually need a scoby. If you can find a bottle of good quality kombucha such as High Country, it's possible to start the whole process with that. I did that last year, and after about a month I was making more than my husband and I could drink.

Yikes! that seems like an awful lot of money for what is basically a very simple drink to make at home! I was making my own for about two and a half years, from a mother that a dear friend sent to me in the mail, with plain black tea and sugar, as per the instructions. Worked just fine, and I had my drinks for literally pennies a day. After that period though, I didn't think I needed to drink it any more - one's body will tell you about this as it does with other things that one adds or subtracts from the diet it seems.

Buying in bulk is another alternative until your home batches begin brewing. During my kombucha phase I would buy the case from my co-op and I'd get a 15% membership discount automatically. And when they were on sale, that was a real bargain ~ sale discount + case membership discount. I don't remember how many are in a case, but I'm pretty sure I never spent over $70 for it and it would last a month or more. The only drawback to the bulk purchase is you are limited to one flavor. I didn't mind so much because GT Ginger is my favorite. Wherever you purchase your fix ;), consider finding out if you can buy the case and ask for a discount. Talk to the produce or store manager. :)

It's 2.00 to 2.98 in california. I probably shouldn't tell you that. Maybe also see if you can get it on-line.

OMG I am having the EXACT same problem!! It is sooo good and addicting. I've decided to start making it myself in a week or so and see what happens!

I would send you a culture for shipping/transportation costs...the issue is me actually getting to the post office. I will be going down that way soon, for some other issues. If you are willing to wait a week, I can send you one.
You should do continuous brewing...you just need a glass 1/2 gallon container, after the initial ten days brewing, you can take out 16oz a day and replace it with fresh tea. Right now I am using a pitcher, since I don't have a sun tea container (my last one broke). You have to cover it with a cloth. It is very easy. I'm on AOL if you have questions. :)

Well, I bought a bottle of the plain kombucha. I will set it out and see what happens! I guess I am suppose to wait a month or two to see if something happens. I am NOT going to buy any until I find a way to make it myself. No one I know has a scoby. I looks pretty simple as long as you keep everything clean.

TWO WORDS: SUNFLOWER MARKET
If you have a Sunflower Market, they sell Kombucha for $2.39/bottle. :)
