I am new to raw, and eager to make some of the recipes in Alyssa's book... do I invest in a processor or get a blender first??
Or do I get one of those combos?? I am reading and reading on Amazon and getting a bit dizzy with brands, prices, bowl sizes... sigh
Help??
Best,
LN
Personally, I couldn't live without my blender. However, many of Alissa's recipes call for the use of a food processor...
If you buy a combo then the chances are that, at some point, you are likely to become more demanding than it is capable of.
If money is tight, then, putting a gun to my head, I'd say get a combo, simply because you clearly wish to use Alissa's recipes but also because I know how incredibly useful a blender can be for green smoothies (which are a mainstay of many raw-foodist's daily diets).
I guess it really depends on how long you think it may be before you can afford to buy a second item. If you don't think it'll be all that long, then I'd suggest going with a blender first, making do with chopping veg for recipes by hand until you can afford a seperate food processor. I would also like to point out that it is not necessary to buy the likes of a Vitamix to begin with - I use a $50 Braun blender and it does a great job. Although it is often true that 'you get what you pay for' if you shop wisely it is still possible to get a reasonable quality unit for a budget price, although this is, admittedly, a very blurred line and you need to keep your wits about you!

I will vote.........FOOD PROCESSOR :) you can pretty much use it like a blender and more. Just keep in mind that you may want to cut the recipes in half when making them---that way you can see ifyou like it without wasting food. Even when I halved the recipes, it was still alot of food !!!!!!!!!! :)

I vote food processor first. I started with one of those hand blender sets. It came with a whipping attachment, a small thingy for making dips and a larger thingy for chopping ice and other stuff. It's worked well so far, but if I had it to do over again, I'd have bought the small cuisinart and just the hand blender. I think the processor works better because of its shape than the larger thingy in my set.

Yep, I'd second the recommendation to get the food processor. I don't think I make anything in the blender I couldn't make in the food processor. Warning: I got one of the combos [by cuisinart] and the fp broke within 6 weeks.

What I would do if I were you is, find out what you are going to make ~ say, in the next month or so ~ then find out what it takes to make them. Most likely, being new, the food processor is your best bet. Second that quickly w/ a blender so you can make smoothies. Smoothies cannot be made in a processor. Waaaaayyyy too much fluid. VERY messy. Ask me how I know. :D

I had a food processor and a Vita Mix, and I used my food processor way more than my Vita Mix, but I don't make a lot of smoothies.
I like the Vita Mix to make really creamy soups, almond milk and smooth whipped cream out of nuts, but unless you mind little bitty bitty tiny baby nut chips in your frosting etc, it's no big deal.
So, I'd say the FOOD PROCESSOR

I'm pretty sure that Alissa actually states in her book which way to go. I lent my copy out, but I think it's in the section where she discusses what equipment to buy!
Have fun!

That really is a hard question. It is like asking if you need air or water to me lol. I guess that it would have to be the blender so I could have the smoothies but the processor would have to be right on the heels of the blender.

It's all about a blender for me. As a matter of fact this time last year is when I began to make amazing peach smoothie combinations...yum, nothing quite like a Utah peach!
