View Full Version : sprouting 101
I tried to sprout black eyed peas. They looked brown and yucky with the little green stems coming out. I have no idea how to do this.
Can anyone lead me in baby steps please? How to sprout? Does it need to have the hull still on?
Does Alissa show how on her DVD? I'm an hour into it.

The Little Green Stem coming out is a Sprout. You can keep rinsing them and the Green will get longer.

The owner of the natual food store I go to suggested starting with alfalfa sprouts and I also got some "Zesty sprouts". It's been easy so far, but I made a msitake early on and was risings and soaling for more than the first night. Just keep rinsing and draining 2x a day...
What about the brown yuck part? Is it ok to pick it off and toss?

Yes, that's just the outside of the Seed. The Sprout came from the HEART of the Seed. So you can toss or eat if you so chose.
When my sprouts are ready to go - I give them a bath. I place them in a big container, fill with water and with a little ladle - I remove all the floating brown hulls. Then I remove the sprouts by hand (do not dump) and place them in a strainer. What's left in the bath water are the rest of the hulls that have sunk to the bottom.
Then I drain the sprouts well, place a folded up clean cloth in the bottom of a glass jar to whick excess moisture and keep them covered in the fridge. Hope that helps! *Ü*

Thanks for the bath idea, Deb!! You're a smart cookie (raw cookie, of course ;) )!!
Mmmm - a raw cookie sure sounds good! Thanks Susan, I hope it works as well for you as it does for me. *Ü*
