You don't need a timer. The timer is more of a convenience than anything. As long as you know when the food you put in needs to come out, you'll be fine. I have no timer and my dehydrator works fantastically.
I use the Nesco FD-61. It's a nice dehydrator because it's little and I was hesitant about the whole raw thing. It only has four trays, but more can be added. I don't like that it doesn't automatically come with more fruit roll trays (the equivalent of teflex sheets) and that it didn't have more trays.
Oh, thank you. I've never even seen one. Feel lost about them.
I've got a timer on mine and to be honest, I am so glad that I do. Lots of times our dehydrator is still running at bed time - so I can set the timer and go on to bed.
Coolexplosion is right in that we don't need it, it's a convenience - I'm glad I've got it, I use it every time I dehydrate. *Ü*

You can always purchase a Timer and just set it for the amount of time needed. Just carry it with you to whatever part of the house you are going to be in. For Sure one that is made in the Machine and will trun the unit off is the Best.
I am Guilty of Rarely using a Dehydrator.

I just got an Excalibur 5 tray Dehydrator for my birthday last month - it is amazing! I've been using it pretty frequently to experiment with different things & dry fruits - it does have a timer and as DebB mentioned - it's great when you have it running into the night or during work so it will automatically turn off!
I also like to use it to warm some of my dishes up...granted...it takes awhile, but it's worth it : )

i've got the excalibur 9 tray. it's a great machine! definitely worth it to get this bigger one instead of their 5 tray model. you'll need the extra room. i didn't get the timer option. but you can pick up a cheap timer from a hardware store (same kind people use for christmas lights) plug the dehydrator into it and then into the wall.
