Hello, I've just returned to raw (as in day before yesterday) after three years off. When I first went raw it was easy, no digestive troubles, felt great right away. That lasted 2 years at 100%, but then I went back to school in a hick town where I couldn't find any palatable veg that wasn't frozen -- and raw nuts, forget it, I might as well be trying to get sushi.

This time I started with a 24-hour fast to clear out, then went to raw fruits veggies nuts etc. About 24 hours in (after the fast) I started having really painful, sore intestinal cramps and I'm on the toilet endlessly (when not doing that I'm sort of lying in bed because the pain takes my breath away). I had taken a couple of days off work to combine a yoga boot camp with my return to raw, but frustratingly enough I'm too weak to hold child's pose! Also having eczema on my elbow, aggravated rosacea (that's part of what I wanted to get rid of in the first place!), and did I mention the intestinal pain??? What's going on? I mixed some apple in my nut-and-broccoslaw salad, but I did 'bad' food combos before with no ill effects. I would go back to my old ovo-lacto ways right now if I didn't feel too crappy to leave the house and go to the store!

BTW, here are some possible variables:

When ovo-lacto I usually take a lot of yogurt -- maybe I'm missing my bugs? Should have thought of probiotics but it's too late to go out and get them now. Just took an acidophilus pill.

HORRIBLE pollen allergy season here.

I've never fasted before.

When I went back to being all raw, I had this also...kind of like IBS. You just need to wait it out and take it easy. It helps not to eat until you are done being on the toilet. If you do eat, try bananas or fresh blueberries (helps with the runs). Your body is just not used to digesting all the fresh produce. This happens to me whenever I eat either a new type of green, or one I haven't had in months - my body is like, "What the h*** is this??? Send it on through!!!"

Definitely stick with the probiotics...they are very helpful.

Good luck!

Thanks! As soon as I can leave the house, bananas sound grand.

Weird thing is, the other thing I was trying to get rid of, depression (I was on Wellbutrin but it made me forget everything) is already feeling better. The same sort of exalted feeling I remember from before, but now I suspect it has something to do with pain/endorphins!
