as you type... think in words not individual letters. ;)

10 years ago, I was spending a bunch of time in an internet chat room, chatting live with other people... It took my typing from slowish typing to blazing fast touch typing in no time at all.
You might want to get on Skype or another chat app and talk to a friend or friends, or join a chat room or something like that where people are talking (typing) back and forth really quickly, if you can. You'll get lots of practice really fast. :)

I find that I am still faster typing improperly with about 8 of my fingers. I grew up with a computer and used to use ICQ, MSN and chat boards when I was young and in school and typing to many people at once made me get faster. Even texting on my phone i don't even have to look at it to type and i don't have a keyboard just the standard phone buttons. It definitely helps to think in words and let your fingers spell it for you without thinking about it. When I am doing typing tests and have to read and copy the words I'm a lot slower than just typing what I am thinking.

Yup, yup!!! That and DON'T look at the keyboard. Memorize where the keys are and then map it with your fingers. Continually looking at the keyboard will slow you down immeasurably.
When I first learned where all of the keyboard keys were located you would see me walking around typing out words with my hands, no keyboard in sight. I looked silly but I think it made me faster.

This is how I learned how to type. I type at about 55-60 wpm because of just this.

Thanks for all the replies :)
I'm quite a fast typist but I really want to learn how to do "the real thing" now :D How long did it take untill you became perfect?

Wow, I wish I could remember. LOL!
I learned how to do it almost 30 years ago on a manual typewriter.
I do remember our teacher had us start with typing a 5 letter word over and over again, it could be any word we liked, but it had to be 5 letters. Once we got good at that word, we picked another 5 letter word.
It should be much easier to learn on a keyboard as opposed to a typewriter, you don't have to lift your right hand from the keys.

I learned in highschool back in the 80's with a typewritter.
Since I graduated from University I have always worked in law firms where typing was the main task.

I never knew there was any other way to Type without using all 10 Fingers. As I always say.....I learn something all the time. And if you did not use all your Fingers, it was called Pecking.
There are all sorts of Downloads you can use to learn to type and improve your Speed. I have improved My Speed just by being on this Forum because I type more but as others I learned in High School. At that time it was Mandatory to take typing, now I think its an elective.
If I find something I can Post, a link, I will.........

Don't laugh at me but there are online sites...trying to think of them...you could plug in "learn how to type online"and there are kids games that teach kids how to type "properly" as far as learning the home row and that goes....it's fun and you're learning at the same time:D. I looked up sites for my nieces and nephew because they just use their index fingers. There's lots of sites, some want you to download and others that are supposedly "free" charge but I think if I remember the ones I thought of below are free....

This is a GREAT tip! I type 90-95 words per minute...(I used to be a secretary...) To add to this tip, do this: TAPE a blank piece of paper over your keyboard... Put your fingers on the keys--under the paper. This will help you because even if you looked down at your fingers, you won't see them! :) Trust me! It'll help you memorize the keys in no time!

From my own experience - practice makes perfect, it comes naturally when you start typing more, this time last year I was a really slow typer with only one hand in use ha the other one would sometimes prod a button but in reality it just takes time. open a blank document and try writing anything just keep writing over time you will definitely improve :)

I've been actively using a computer since I was 10 years old (almost 22 now) :) I originally would type with two fingers and refused to ever learn the "proper way". Well, my Freshman year of high school, we HAD to learn! I was in a semester long class and we learned to type with all of our fingers. Is there a college around you that offers a computer class? I also learned so much more than how to type
I think practicing where the keys are will help you out. The teacher would give us exercises that helped our fingers learn where to go. Typing things like "j y j y j y j y j" and "fvfvfvfv".
We practiced the home row so many times "a s d f j k l ; space"
We also were given a blank picture of a keyboard and had to fill in all of the letters. I thought it would be hard, but wow, I had no idea what my subconscious brain was capable of! I got an A! I knew the keyboard SO well, that when I was 15, I completely removed all of the keys and rearranged them for fun. I was still able to fully type until I had to put it back to normal when my best friend needed to use my computer  and was still typing with two fingers

I am using all the great tips you gave me. It's fine and reminds me on learning how to play the piano, only without the sound :D
