View Full Version : Broken Bones and RAW
Punky

Hello Wise Raw Health Seekers,
My little boy (almost 5 on Aug. 9th) broke his arm
yesterday :(
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for raw food to feed him
to quicken the healing process along
I was thinking green smoothies since he likes them and the added minerals from the greens might help the healing....any other suggestions?
Any food item in particular good for bones?
Thanks in Advance!

Seaseme Seed Milk is very high in calcium. I read about this in one of the Butenko (sp?) books.

I have 2 of their books so will look thru them today to see if I can find a
recipe; that sounds like something
that would be kid friendly too. :)
Eat large quantities of horsetail, it is the fastest way to heal broken bones! Also, MSM will speed up the healing along with fresh vegetable and wheatgrass juices.

Can I get horsetail at wholefoods market? Is it common?
I am not very familier with it.
I do have a juicer so will juice him some fresh juices too.
It doesn't do wheatgrass though, but I can do some greens in it.
I have MSM in the cupboard too!
I didn't even think of that one. He is drinking a smoothie
right now which I added lots of raw tahini too for extra calcium.
Thanks for the suggestions Mike!
Hi Punky,
You can purchase horsetail in the supplement aisle at Whole Foods. You can also find it growing wild.
Horsetail is the best source of silica, which may be better for healthy bones than calcium is. (horsetail is also an ingredient in Vita-mineral Green)

I will take a looksie at the supplement at whole foods; but I DO have
Vitamineral Green in my cupboard too...it's been in there for awhile so not sure on it's freshness, but can get a fresh bottle with my food coop since they sell it.

Oh Punky, I am so sorry for your son.
He must be a very brave young man.
I was going to say Sesamie seed milk and horsetail.
Now, we have tons of horsetail growing in our yard, but you live way too far away, alas.
But it works really well with bones, hair and nails, and teeth.
so, you have been given already wonderful advise.
I just love all the caring and knowledge here on this board.

Poor little guy; he is being a brave trooper...
I feel bad that his birthday is coming up next Tuesday too :(
Ok, I am moving in with you in your castle! :p
Your gardens and strawberries are very inticing ;)
I agree this board is filled with caring beautiful souls!!! :)

Straight from the Boutenko book.
1 cup seeds soaked overnight
2 cups water
1 Tablespoon honey or 2-3 dates
1 teaspoon Celtic salt (optional)
Thouroughly blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Strain mixture through a sprout bag. Pour into jar.

Ever noticed how your palette is 'cleared' when eating a raw diet without additives and spices? Well smell and taste are intimately linked and it is no surprise to me that when one's body (and thus organs) are cleansed of toxins and miscellaneous pollutive substances, that one's senses improve.

Check out Truthseeker's posts - her son apparently broke his arm recently and his doctors are removing his cast 2 weeks earlier than they usually would, on account of his excellent healing progress - Truthseeker has been feeding him blended smoothies with ace bonebuilding nutrients!
Here's one of the posts, be sure to check out her others, too:

Darn, Arky beat me to it. :) I'd just found the post by truthseeker I was telling you about Punky, and here's an excerpt:
"Victoria from rawfamily.com btw, has a GREAT recipe for remineralizing teeth, APPLES + SESAME SEEDS + NETTLES in a smoothie together.
My little boy broke his arm 3 weeks ago, I make a "super smoothie" for him everyday:
water - always
cacao -always
nettles -always
horsetail -always
hemp seed -always
sesame seed -always
agava -always
banana -sometimes if he says it needs it
vanilla -sometimes to give it a bit more of a mocha jazz
bee pollen -sometimes
maca -sometimes
pumpkin oil -sometimes
He gets apples in his dinner green juice.
The orthopedic team that we see call him "the bone maker" ha,ha.
He will be getting his cast off 2 weeks ahead of schedual!"

Thank you Arky and Christa!
More great wisdom! Perfect!!!
You all are a great source of info and have saved me alot of time.
I have most of those ingrediants on hand for the super smoothie except the Nettles and Horsetail. Should I buy these items as dried herbs or as
a supplement-capsule to pour into the smoothies?...I was thinking the capsules if available?!??! Or make a tea from the dried herbs perhaps?!?!?

Ok I think I have formed somekind of healing gameplan for
my little Alex :D Thanks for all the suggestions!
--upon waking up some MSM water
--breakfast: super smoothie!
--in addition to his lunch some sesame seed milk
--with his dinner some green juice (I call it HULK juice, and
he responds well about drinking this). Probably cucumber, bell pepper,
romaine, and apple for sweetness, and some Horsetail)
Blessings to you all for your help! :)
The absolute BEST way to get these is to go to your local park and find them. Nettles, at least, are always easy to find and the sooner you use them after picking, the better, as many proponents swear that 'living greens' have greater healing power. It's not critical, but if you can use them within 48hrs of picking them, then so much the better.

Mike's recommendation for wheatgrass is also a good one because wheatgrass is quite easy to grow at home, and thus harvest and consume literally immediately. Wheatgrass is also high in calcium and numerous other minerals.

I might order a shot of wheatgrass at whole foods and mix it in some juice for him if he won't drink it straight...I don't have the time or inclination (or space) or juicer to grow wheatgrass unfortunately ...
:p I am lazy, ha! They sometimes sell flats of it at whole foods, but since I don't have that kind of juicer it wouldn't do me any good.
hmmmm...will have to research finding it fresh in my area (i.e. what it looks like)...it definately would be better fresh I am sure.

(((((hugs to you and your little darling boy)))))
Fruit it good for growing bones (and their density), so, perhaps, some yummy fruit smoothies would be good? Say,
* water/orange juice, bananas and a large handful of your favourite fruit (blueberries, raspberries, mangoes) and a few dates, perhaps.
Love,
Gosia.

I'm sure organic wild herbs are best, but the parks around here spray every living thing. I'd rather use dried organic herbs than sprayed fresh. Personally I'd love to go wildcrafting, just too close to the city.
Punky, putting the nettle and horsetail in his smoothie or juice sounds good. I love your Hulk juice moniker! I just got back from the hf store, frontier herbs has both in bulk. The stuff purchased in capsules is the same thing, only you're paying for them to fill the capsules as well.
Please don't feel like you have to do everything everyone [including me] suggests to be the best mom you can be. :)

Hey Christa,
Good point about them spraying the parks here! YES they do, esp. for mosquitos...I will stick to the ones from Whole Foods since I don't know
much about wild foraging or a safe unsprayed area to do so.
Little Alex is feeling better the last 2 days; he was on Motrin around the clock at 1st but the last couple of days he hardly doesn't need any at all; just when he fell again playing with his brother! I can't wait to get his permanant
cast on tomarrow! He is a very active and rambunctios little one.
We surprised him with an early birthday party yesterday which lifted his spirits.
Thanks everyone for your caring advice
:) much appreciated!

Just a quick inquiry... I've always thought that horsetail was bad to eat. My plant book says that it is not poisonous but also not good for you to consume, and I know it can cause severe gastric problems in horses when they eat too much (but of course, that's horses...different system). Sounds like I've been wrong about the plant all this time!! Anyone know of a good link to its benefits?
