Hi all!!!
I have two questions:
1. if i'm going to grind flax seeds to add into smoothies, do i need to make sure they are labeled raw (which is hard to find except for some sprouted ones they sell on the internet)?
2. i made soup in the vitamix and added flax oil...but later on in the day when i ate it it smelled and tasted like nail polish remover!! does this mean the oil is rancid? it was only like 2wks old and kept in the fridge the whole time...

thanks!!!!!

Oil can go rancid when it's exposed to light and air and oxidizes... hence the dark bottles they are kept in. I don't add cold pressed oils to anything if i can help it... they seperate and can taste funky after a short time

The Seeds are RAW.........Let set in water and they will Jell. I just add them to the Smoothie in the Vita-Mix.

so i just let the blob of jell sit in the fridge and scoop some out to add to smoothies in the vitamix? hehe

The flax oils aren't the best to use because they go bad easily. There's some research that some mention that it's never really that fresh by the time you get it. Best to stick with the seeds.

I crush them in the dry jug of the blender and add it as powder.

cool, so do i soak them first if i'm going to crush them for powder? i have a feeling the blender won't crush them if they are that gooey blob!

There's two ways to deal with flax ~

Grind OR soak, not both.

If you want powder, DO NOT soak them. There's no reason to soak them if you're going to put them in a smoothie. Drink asap as the flax will turn your smoothie into gunk.

They're soaked when using in a recipe as they are glutinous and take the place of egg whites to bind things together.
