For some reason when I eat a mango I have always peeled it. Last night I was watching a show and this guy goes over to a mango tree , plucks one, and chomps down on it without taking the skin off. Never thought to do that. Do you eat the mango skin and if so would you happen to know if there is any nutritional value in it.

I would love to hear what others have to say to. I always peel mine and never thought of leaving the peel on.

Yes, I have always peeled mine, I also then scrape out the residue, left on the inside of the peels, via my teeth. When I get to the actual peel it tastes sort of "blacky" or something. I think that eating the skin when picked straight from the tree could be OK, but the amount of pesticides/growth hormones etc. on the one's from the market/supermarket would be a bit risky. That's my
opinion, I will also be interested to see what other members have to say about this.

I was just cutting up mangoes last night and wondered the same thing! I had a regular mango and some atulfo mangoes, and they were sure hard to estimate the pit and cut around it. I found that my 2 really ripe mangoes were the easiest to "peel" after slicing. What I do is cut off the two sides first and then cut those in half and stick my finger nail inbetween the flesh and the peel and peel it a away kinda like peeling off a bandaid i guess. The not so ripe ones were almost impossible to peel after cutting. I wondered if other mammals ate the skin on them as well... i wouldn't have tried as these weren't organic.

Mango peels have an oil on them that is a very mild version of the oil found on poison ivy leaves. If you are sensitive to poison ivy, you could get a rash from mango peels! I am allergic to poison ivy, so if I even touch a mango and don't immediatly wash my hands with soap and warm water, I get a rash! So I wouldn't even want to try eating a mango skin lol.
If I get poison ivy I have to go on steroids, I'm that sensitive to it.

The show I was watching was HGTV's House Hunter's International I think they were in the Dominican Republic and the man was looking for a house. He walked onto the property and saw and mango tree, picked one and ate it. I do wonder if they are grown that way if the skin is edible as oppose to the supermarket.
Rawstrength- very good information. Thanks

huh, that's interesting. I am a HUGE fan of mangoes, they are my absolute favorite food! During mango season I can eat three in one sitting!:D Sometimes I have accidently eaton some mango skin, and have never had an allergic reaction to it, so next time I eat a mango I will try eating the skin.

My dh worked with some Jamaicans and he said they would roll it around in their hands for a good hour or so till it was nothing but juice, then pop up the 'lip' thing at the bottom and chug it!
I tried it but it didn't work out...I don't think I rolled it around for long enough.
Yes, I've chewed on them and no I don't like them. I do like someone else here does, I chew the flesh off the skin....when I'm alone. I attempt nicer manners at work.

I don't eat the peels.
In terms of dealing with the pit, I find it best, after peeling, to just eat it like corn on the cob! I do it over the sink because it can be messy, but I find it's easier than trying to cut around the pit :)

I also would not eat the peel... but the inside makes me kinda go into a serious state of bliss while eating it and for a while afterwards!!!
I would love to grow a tree here in TX. I will have to look into that. I wonder if it would grow here in a green house... hmmmmm....

I don't ever eat mango peel. There have been several instances where I've been chomping down on a bit and gotten some of the skin on my lips or face and it started to tingle and go numb.

I love mangos, but I'm like Rawstrength, get a poison ivy-like rash on my face when I eat it! It was when I ate it w the skin on, scraping it off with my teeth. Now I'm scared to eat it!! Sad day!

I LOVE mangos, the champagne ones are the BEST. Do what SHazzie does and eat them in the tub.

I checked that out also. I thought he was going to get the house with the Mango tree but he didn't. He was in his Country so they probably eat them like that.

Yes, in the tub. Best way to eat a juicy mango is naked. Then go in tub to get sticky off...haha.

I think that is an old show. Is it a guy looking for a house (I think in Costa Rica).
I saw it a few years ago (if it is the same one) and I also noticed that it was very hard when he bit in to it. I decided that as soon as the camera was turned off he cast it aside.
