I keep my leafy greens in papertowel and plastic in the fridge and I just went to make a smoothie with my kale and found these tiny winged black bugs on the papertowel, so I soaked the kale in water and even more came out so I soaked and rinsed and resoaked and rinsed and soaked the third time (each time with apple cider vinegar and bugs are still coming off of it.

I've never had this happen before, a bug or 2 in the romaine maybe but nothing else. I assume there are eggs in this too and I should chuck it and go buy more or will the vinegar soak kill everything?

I think I'm going to soak everything in vinegar from now on!!

I'd throw it away and take the garbage out immediately!!!

V4L,

Have you ever had your kitchen overrun by flies - multiplying like crazy?

I'm guessing you lot are like me - a fridge full of greens and countertops stacked with huge supplies of bananas, avocados, apples, pears, oranges? Fertile breeding grounds for tiny flies.

I have been overrun with flies before: to the extent that I had to take out the garbage constantly - even setting traps for them by putting rotting fruit at the bottom of bags, sneaking up, sealing the bag and running outside with it! I'd bat the bag around till they all flew out - and take the "trap" back in to snag their cousins.....

I recommend action!

I threw it out, I soaked it in vinegar 3-4 times and rinsed it 3-4 times and kept getting more and more bugs. If there are that many bugs there has to be eggs too, the bugs I don't mind so much - it's the eggs that scare me.
Then I cleaned out my crisper with vinegar and soaked the other greens in there and luckily no bugs.

It was just regular everyday kale, I haven't been able to find organic kale yet. It sure taught me a lesson - everything will be soaked in apple cider vinegar from now on!!

Curly kale is always rife with delightful little buggies and their kin in my experience.
I usually get dino kale 'cause it's less likely to be home to the little dears.

I'd just eat 'em... they are bugs and really tiny. David Wolfe says that ants are a good source of vitamin B12. You think there is a difference?

I don't wash my produce, typically, and I am OK with consuming a few little critters here and there.
I just don't want to chew my way through a whole colony.
