Spices frequently "make" the meal.

on the other hand...as we've discussed in the "are you 100% raw" thread, there is a fabulous, ethereal quality that 100% raw can get you to that is not achieved with the "nearly 100%" version.

I've noticed plenty of recipes here with powdered garlic, onion, or red pepper, etc. I use black pepper myself.

Do you lot source some raw spices? do they exist? do you make your own?

Or just accept the compromise?

if a recipe calls for a spice i usually look for fresh herbs at the store.. i dont grow anything yet. Um the only thing i use regularly is cumin or garlic or basil.

The organic powders are often low-temperature dried (like Frontier, Simply Organic). I stick with mostly fresh whenever possible.

I wrote to frontier - got a reply already!!!

Here it is for those interested:

Thank you for your inquiry. Our products are dried at a low temperature
heat. Some are dried in the sun and some are dried with fans and others by
low heat. We carry such a large variety of herbs, I would be unable to
tell you what products are dried by which method.

Dried herbs and spices, unless grown and processed at home on a very small
scale, should not be considered adherent to a raw foods diet.

Looks raw - but they don't want to open up liability issues - like mcdonalds and their "vegetable oil fries"

I don't make an issue of it. If I need it and its available...I use it. They can't dry spices at a High temp anyway because it would effect the Natural Flavor of the Herbs/Spice.
