I am going to try my hand at sprouting. What's the best one to try, the easiest one and/or the best tasting one - so I don't give up?

I sprout lentils and chickpeas (garbanzo beans) with total ease. Just make sure you buy then in bulk from a place with lots of turnover so you know they are fresh. If they're not, they may not sprout well and for a first timer, you want to be successful.

LENTILS! they are extremely forgiving. you can even do them in a bowl. and if you forget to rinse them for a day they still wont go bad and will still sprout

I do all my sprouting in bowls with a paper towel over the top. Lentils are great because they are so quick to sprout, you can almost watch the tails grow with the naked eye :D

that just sounds too easy :)
I was going to look for one of those special jars with the mesh lid but I think I'll save my money and go with the bowl and papertowel then.
I have had mung bean sprouts before, I bought them by accident at the Asian store and loved them.
I know my local store has garbanzos and lentils so I will pick those up tommorrow, mung beans I dunno, I may have to search for them.
Love that mung bean photo!

I picked up lentils, garbanzos and mung beans to start. I will keep my eyes open for clover and sunflower. All I could find were salted sunflower with and without shells - I assume that's not what I want.
I bought a huge bag of flax also, I want to try making crackers. I just need to find sundried tomatoes.....

I agree with the lentil and chickpea. I also did a spicy radish mix that was very good. I ordered from sproutpeople. No problems with the seeds or the sprouters.

Betty do you have a whole foods or health food shop near you? you shoudl be able to get raw organic sunflower seeds without shells out of the bulk bins for between 2 and 3 dollars a pound at any of these shops. Clover sprouting seeds are sometimes sold in the bulk spice section. most places have whole fenugreek seeds in with the spices too and these will sprout easily usually although they are a more bitter sprout

I am in Canada so no Whole Foods store here. I've been to my fav health food store and he said just buy from the bulk section at the grocery store. I haven't seen any bulk bins at any health food store here, ever, but I'll check out some other ones and see if they have them because I'd like to try clover and alfalfa.
I did find organic sunflower and pumpkin seeds without shells, at the grocery store where I work but didn't buy them, I'll get some when I go back to work.
I successfully made wheatgrass this week by planting the seeds in soil, so I thought I'd try spouting them first for my second try. I can't believe how fast they sprouted!! I just used a mesh strainer in a bowl covered with papertowel, now I have tiny white tails on them. I'm wondering if I keep rinsing them every 12 hours or should I plant them now? They taste pretty darn good I may just eat them instead of planting them, lol!
Did I tell you all how much I appreciate everyones help? I have learnt more from this board in a few weeks than an entire lifetime out in the real world.

Oh, I didn't realize you could eat mung bean sprouts when they've gone green like that. Thanks, michigan roman!
