Hi - I am planning to train and run a marathon in the fall. I am looking for any advice regarding what to take in during long runs (especially in the hot summer when I will be training/running 3-4 hours at a time). I know that gatorade, gels, beans, etc.. are not raw but I am concerned about carbohydrate and electrolyte replacement. Thanks! Kimberly

A lot of people do half juice and half water or green smoothies. Gatorade and stuff like that is all sugar and salt and can really screw up your blood sugar. I'm sure doing fresh orange juice and water would be great for you.

bananas
raisin soak water
date soak water
...are all good options. don't worry specifically about electrolyte replacement...if you eat a well balanced raw food diet you will recover faster and feel better running. gatorade and similar products scare us into thinking we need them to be balanced, but as veronica01 has said those things just cause problems...
there are plenty of folks who thrive eating this way and run a ton! good luck with your training.

young coconuts!
bring them along, crack open and drink the water - nature's gatorade.

I'm already sporting a lot, I prefer green smoothies, light ones, but with the ingredients already mentioned.
And a lot of water.

Bananna

According to my research, as I was concerned about it too...is that for one, it only becomes a possible issue during extensive training periods.
The two main things you need are potassium and sodium. So...bananas and celery would work. Coconut water would work. Just a normal raw, fresh whole food meal would work...with maybe some extra salt.
It has come recommended to eat some bananas prior to the workout, and then drink grape/celery juice during and after.
Hope that helps!
I just did a shorter distance triathlon--approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes of Swim/Bike/Run. I raced very hard--and took in 24 oz of coconut water during the hour + i was on the bike and only water. Felt great and had a very successful race.
For anything under 1:15-1:30, you probably don't need anything provided that you are well hydrated and it is not screaming hot and or humid. I would pay attention to your pre workout or race meal: You can make a smoothie with banana, ground flax seed, raw hemp powder and whatever fruit you'd like. That works for me.
Good luck. I plan on racing an Ironman distance triathlon "in the raw" this summer

You won't need carb replacements. Look into making sure you get all of the proper electrolytes you need, though.

I recommend to get the book of Brendan Brazier "Thrive fitness"
He is a triathlon athlete and this book is very informative with great information. Of course he is raw vegan.
Enjoy

i second the opinion that you really just need to focus on electrolytes and a bit of carbs - something young coconut water will offer. i used to run ultramarathons (30-100 miles at one time) and you really won't need that much food, though bananas are great if you're going to be running beyond 3 hours. gatorade will actually dehydrate you from a physical chemistry standpoint so definitely not recommended. best wishes on your marathon - we all look forward to hearing about it!

Why not both? I like to pack as many macro and micronutrients in a smoothie. There is no steadfast rule--my smoothie combos vary with what is in the house.
