View Full Version : Growing food the really lazy way

I'm such a dunce when it comes to growing anything, but I've come to realise I spend SO MUCH on organic greens it's just not funny anymore.

I just wanted to tell anyone who cared that I've started a Really Lazy Garden, lots of green edibles in pots and some in the ground. I'm growing stuff that grows itself (parsley, mint, basil) and other things that are pretty hardy (oregano, sage, thyme, kale, garlic).

Pots seem so much easier to me, they need a bit of extra watering but the no dig factor is just what I like, plus they can be taken with me if I move (I rent).

Another lazy thing I do is try to live where there are already existing food plants (fruit trees, grape vines, mint etc.)

I'm super excited! Someone asked me how was I going to eat all the greens, and here I am wondering if it's gonna be enough!

Tomorrow I'll be planting spinach (will stagger this so I have some ready all the time), sugar snap peas and rocket, and I'll be repotting my dear blueberry plant.

Gotta make use of this gardening enthusiasm while it's still here, LOL!

Anyone else a lazy gardener?

Not a Lazy one because I really like to get my hands in Dirt. You are not Lazy, you are just working Smart. The main thing is that you realized you were spending too much money and could grow your own. The Pots were a Smart idea.

I know just how you were thinking when asked "how you were going to eat ALL those Greens"?

I also think if I have to give it Food and Water, it's got to give me something in return like....Fruit.

Haha! Yes, I totally understand the idea that if we're going to all that effort, we may as well get something in return.

I'm one of those people that just can't understand why some go to SO MUCH trouble to cultivate a garden of... inedible plants!

I use Earthboxes. Funny thing is, two years in a row now, I've had a huge patch of parsley come up under the deck where the boxes are. Apparently it is dropping seeds down there and it's reseeding itself. Now I just need a couple of rabbits to come by and eat it all for me.:D

I have a nice collection and got a lot of greens this winter. Starting to work on the summer garden. I am finally going to get tomatoes! Florida is a little weird for tomatoes.

I'm right there with you, klomasius. There's just no point in buying food that's so darn simple to make. Exotic and hard-to-grow products are one thing, but usually you can grow everything you need for far less money.

I just put out a bunch of lettuce Friday. Romaine, Swiss Chard, red leaf lettuce. Going back to the garden shop to get some spinach, argula, and a bunch of herbs.

I kept checking it all weekend to see if it's grown yet. :D

I kept checking it all weekend to see if it's grown yet. :DYeah, I'm kind of obsessed with seeing them actually grow. Sometimes I just sit outside and watch my little seedlings for a few minutes, to observe the growth. Patience isn't one of my strong points
