I am still really nervous about trusting myself to forage edible greens. I really wish there was some sort of class or tuturial on this. I know that sounds crazy, but i wouldn't want to start picking weeds in vacant lots and around the house etc. But maybe in the national parks and such.

veronica--
i was like this too, but there are a few that are a safe-bet:
nettles--ask anyone to confirm it for you. most people know what nettles are. if they look like nettles and they sting you, they are probably nettles. the sting is tell-tale ;)
chickweed: look at pics and find something that looks like it. then break off a "branch"/twig/piece/stem of it and hold it up to the light. you should see a fine row of hairs running up one side of it, *** and the row of hairs, when it reaches a place where another "branch" branches off of the stem , the row of hairs will move to a different side, then at the next branching, the third side, and then the next, the last side. this was really helpful to me to help me positively identify chickweed. (although today i found something that looked JUST LIKE chickweed, but with thicker stems and doesnt have the hair so i wonder that was )
sorrel and wood sorrel are also pretty easy to ID by the shape, and then if theyre sour
dandelion is pretty easy too--if theres a dandelion flower attached to it, well, you have dandelion leaves
those are all im comfortable with at the moment, but its a start, and these are pretty easy to ID with these tips

Thanks! This page is awesome. I miss foraging, I've been hesitant to forage here in DC. I used to forage all the time before I moved here, but it was different then, because I lived in rural MI.

Thanks! I've been going out locally and picking out foods that look edible and chowing down. It's a fun process.
We've got someone locally here in Altadena who teaches foraging.

You're welcome everyone. From that site I was finally able to discover, yes I do have chickweed.
I see there are also pics of edible and non-edible mushrooms. Don't know if I can go there quite yet.
Revvell, you are one brave soul. You must have good instincts.

Zanjabil--why not try rock creek park, if you can get up to silver spring. i would think that would be a pretty safe place to forage. be careful about going on your own though as some spots are kind of isolated and i wouldnt feel safe going on my own.

Good idea...I was also thinking of a park might be the place to start. I just wasn't sure if they used any sprays/insecticides.

Do you have any more information?

hmmm. there are some pretty isolated areas of rock creek. they might use sprays on the grass areas and the picnic areas, but if you could find things that grow in the wooded sections (?violets? ?wood sorrel? etc), and/or in natural clearings in the wood sections, i would think you would be ok. theres also a huge park out in MD near the west side of the beltway...its called7____something. i dunno 7 glens or something? maybe there, dunno. i think you probably do have to worry about pesticide use around grassy lawns/picnic areas in parks, but if you can forage in the woodland areas and natural clearings i would think they are relatively safe.....
