I'm heading to Gerlach, NV at the end of the month for the annual Burning Man festivities (my art project is slated to be shown). I'm looking for good raw food diet ideas since I have to be there all week due to the art installation and maintenance.

I've been really good about being raw for the past 7 days solid (and if you've read my journal you know what an achievement that is for me). I don't want to stop my roll so I need some help.

Here's the parameters:

*It's 110 degrees and extremely dry during the day

*I don't have a generator so no artificial cooling -- just ice, dry ice and a couple of coolers.

I'm making dehydrator cookies and crackers and some dehydrated veggies. I'm freezing some grapes and putting them in the dry ice cooler to keep frozen for a few days.

Fresh stuff only lasts a couple of days out there so I'll have some oranges and canteloupe and green beans and salad fixins.

I'm also taking a lot of nuts.

Maybe I should make some Essene bread the traditional way while I'm there? Problem is, I don't know how to sprout.

Argh. I want to eat well. Please advise.

If you have a small jar with you, you can fill lower third with nuts/seeds and then fill with water. Keep lid on, so it won't get knocked over and spill. Keep in shade, and rinse at least once during they day. Late afternoon or evening (for next morning sprouts) dump the nuts/seeds into a paint strainer bag. Hang someplace, where water can drip off. Some things sprout within 4 hours and others you may need to rinse after 8 hours and hang again. If just depends on what it is you are sprouting. The easiest for me is sunflower sprouts.

Also, if you eat mushrooms, you could marinate them in a little oil and salt, and leave out all day to come back to your camp site ready to eat a tasty mushroom.

Out in the desert, you would also want to eat alot of juicy fruits. Or bring alot of water. Will they sell fresh fruit there?

Have a great time.

Thanks for the sprouting information I'll give it a try.

They don't sell anything at this event it's totally about radical self-sufficiency and you have to bring everything you need to survive the harsh (extremely harsh) elements for an entire week. And you're limited to what you can carry in with your car.

Fresh fruit is great but it only lasts a couple of days. The heat withers everything by day 3. Ditto fresh vegetables except onions, garlic, carrots and cabbage.

I think I'm in for a heck of a lot of nut pate, dehydrated crackers, cookies, breads. I think I'll take some green powder too.

Hi! I joined this group to let you know what's worked for me the last few years...
dried gogi berry, hemp seed, raw cacao trail mix
Cases of raw young coconuts last the whole time. They can sustain you completely, and you'll leave the playa healthier than when you left home. Really!
But you probably want variety, so I make date, fig, nut, etc. balls and wrap them up and store them in a cool place.
There are always neighbors that have refridges- so just ask someone to hold your salads/juices til you need them. Trade a foot massage or something for the use of their fridge.
Squashes last, and you can make pasta with them.
I also have brought a tray of wheatgrass I was growing, and harvested it fresh everyday.

See you out there!

Lydia's Loving Foods has INCREDIBLE crackers, pizza crusts, cookies, everything. Don't forget the power of dehydrated gourmet foods!! Died tomatoes, olives, fruits sparingly, etc.
