View Full Version : Ok, so I'm here.
and I have no idea what to do. I read a very short paragraph about an actress adopting a 'raw' diet and it sounded interesting. I came across a 'vita mixer' and it was $500.00-$800.00. Wow. This sounds so healthy. I went to a vegatarian? diet site and was horrified by the propaganda., Very pleased to be here. Now, I'm off to attempt to figure out how to change my life., Any help is welcome. Thanks all.

Hi Myca!
You can get a high-powered blender, like the VitaMix or the BlendTec, for less than that. If you opt for a reconditioned model, or do a search on eBay, or if you belong to Costco or Sams Club, you can get them for less. :p
Read, read, read! There is so much information here! Do more searches online, and read a few more sites. You might pick up a book or three. Naturally, Alissa Cohen's book is available through this site, and is recommended. You can also do a search at your local library for books on raw eating, to get a wider viewpoint.
Hope it all goes well for you. :)
Ahh, this is so neat. Can we really loose weight on this way of eating? and feel well too?

What a cool story of how you got here Myca.
While you are doing all this reading and learning, start each day raw and see how far you can go. If you start by eating several small meals of fruit throughout the morning, that should carry you to lunch and fruit doesn't need any equipment or recipes! (BTW, weightloss happens in the morning but it will slow or stop if the liver has to digest anything BUT fruit, because the ripening process pre-digests fruit, requires no digestion by the liver so it doesn't stop the weightloss.)

Welcome! I've already lost 9 lbs and I'm starting my second week raw.
My suggestion is to get a few good raw books. Alissa's book, Living On Live Food, is really good and the recipes in there are so yummy! I've gone raw before but the recipes in Alissa's book are helping me to stay raw. There's just so much you can make and do! lol
Also, try and see if there's a raw potluck in your area. When I lived in California I went to one and I go to one now that I'm in New York. I found both on meetup.com. I've found the raw foodists at the potlucks to be awesome and amazing people. I've learned so much from them and made good friends too.
If you have any questions then be sure to ask. There is no silly or small question. :D

Welcome and good luck on your RAWNESS journey.
Everyone is so nice here. Thanks to everyone for the encouraging comments.
I started the day out intending to eat eggs....cooked. and then progress to raw food. Exactly the opposite of what someone has just suggested.
Did I mention I am coming in from a year on and off Atkins? Bless his heart.
I pulled out the eggs but never cooked them or ate them. I realized I didn't have much in the fridge. I found 6 bellpeppers, 3 strawberries and a bunch of kiwi.
I washed the bellpepper, sliced it and ate it. Then I decided I was starving and went back for the eggs. Instead, I cut up the three strawberries, a kiwi and ate that. Then cheese. I really think I should go to the store...
My mother in law showed up with an entire flat of strawberries. Can I eat yoguart? The eggs are back in the fridge.
I have a blender. I checked out Alissa's store and see a vita mixer is well priced there. I want to get the book and maybe the DVD. Is she on the Food channel?
On a budget, what is the most important machine to get? I think I will order them one at a time after I get the book?
Thanks everyone
Myca

A good blender would be the top pick for me. I use mine multiple times a day.
The good news about losing weight on raw food is that you don't have to go hungry. Eat raw food until full. The raw desserts are soooo satisfying if you have a sweet tooth.
Good luck on your raw journey!!

i would get a food processor. i bought the cheapest one - $40 it is great. many of the recipes in alissa's book can be made with a food processor. you already have a blender, so that is great for smoothies and salad dressings and nut milk.
i followed a raw diet for years using only a cheap blender and a knife! eventually you may want to invest in vitamix, etc, but it is not necessary to get started.
