I saw a couple post on here regaurding Prozac and here is my two cents worth.I went on Prozac and felt so much better, but felt ashamed and secretive in taking it,so I decided to go off,so no suprise I got depressed agian.I waited and waited and waited, why?Because people make you feel like crap when you take it and you dont want no one to know.I started seeing a therapist, ans hse asked me if I felt better on Prozac and I said yes I was much happier, but there is such a stigma,First I figured out my doctor really cares about me and would not suggest me to take it he thought it was harmful,he has seen my ups and downs. Now my therapist advised me to do what is best for me and not listen to others, only I can be in my shoes. So after months of saying,no,no no,to prozac,I feel happy again.Yes diet can help, but its not that easy for some.I am finally standing up for my own happiness. And its nice some people can wean off and go back to being themselves, but for others these medications are a godsend. So just do what is always right for you and hopefully you have a doctor that really cares about you,and dont let others make you feel bad.

JMO-but now that you are happier, it seems eating raw would be easier for you. the more raw you eat, the better you will feel, and maybe can decrease your dosage as you go along. Good luck.

i always prefer to make decisions based on direct experience rather than belief systems. good for you for having the courage to work with what you experience to be true not what pre-conceptions you may have

wish you all the best.

i will add that meditation has been the absolute key to wellness for me. it has profoundly changed my life and may help you to get to the root of what is agitating your mind. it is definitely not an "either / or" scenario. One thing I thought about a lot this weekend that i heard during a meditation lecture one time "try treating yourself REALLY REALLY well and see what happens"

it sounds like part of your active plan to do that right now is to take prozac. so that is one small piece of the larger goal of your life of JOY.

Joy to you everyday!!!:)

Good for you burgespj for listening to your body. Our Mental Health is so important.

I was on Prozac then Celexa then Lexapro for 9 years and had pretty surrendered to being on them for life. They made such a difference for me. Then I went Vegetarian and soon after completely Organic. I had no intention of getting of my meds but, kept forgetting to take them. (Which I never forgot to take my meds) So, interestingly I realized my body and mind no longer needed them and I observed myself for a couple of weeks. I did start taking 5htp and still do. I'm amazed at how well I am. My DH says I'm better then I was.

Hang in there keep eating healthier and listen to your body!

There's always hope and if not there's meds. ;)

Depression is epidemic because of the kind of world we live in. Millions of people take anti-depressants. The World Health Organization projects that by 2020 depression will be the world's number two public health problem. Do what you must to deal with the epidemic and realize that it is not your fault. A good diet might help, or might not. But it won't hurt.

If meds help, stick with them and don't worry about what anyone else thinks or says. The most important thing is that you're able to function as well as you can.

There are tons of natural remedies that you should consider when you're off them to see if something else may work.

It's okay! I know lots of people who are functioning and happy and nice on Prozac. I've been on it years ago. At first it worked because it alleviated my depression enough for me to see what I wanted to feel like. Then I started getting weird side affects like feeling agitated and getting too skinny and messing up my sleep cycles. But every body is different.

Now, I'm doggedly doing a holistic treatment I designed myself.

The most important element is exercise. Preferably out in the sunshine, which is challenging living in Oregon.

These are the supplements I take, not every day, not consistently but they add up to something powerful. They're also expensive!

phosphytalsyrine ( I totally spelled that wrong, I don't have a bottle handy)

rhodiola

gingko biloba

E3 Brain On

a quality B vitamin mix now and then, maybe once or twice a week

Actually, if I had to say the most important thing has absolutely been my community. I'm blessed to be part of a 12 step recovery fellowship.

But you know we all gotta do what we gotta do to get on in this world.

you know what helps for depression?

doing what you love.

living life for yourself instead of chasing some ideal.

Prozac is a drug that your brain will become addicted to in order to remain "normal". Go raw and slowly ween yourself- DON'T COLD TURKEY IT. Good luck

The rhodiola/ginkgo combination is wonderful, and no side effects. I take it for my ADD & it helps me feel perkier and focus. There are many natural remedies people can use, but it takes some experimenting to find what works.
The doctor prescribed Prozac for my son, but I refused because it causes suicidal thoughts & behaviors in children my son's age, and he is also bipolar (the doctor misdiagnosed him) and would have spazzed. Of course, these were just my excuses...I have never given my son even a tylenol. I am very against medications of all kinds.

That said, it is your body and your decision. I have told my son he can choose for himself when he is of a mature age, because it is a very personal choice. One of my best friend's cannot handle life without her medications, and I don't judge her for it.

Just don't believe you "need" it. I think it is good to keep the attitude that it is a stepping stone & one day you might be able to handle life without it and still be happy. Keep hope alive!

Best Wishes,

Michele

Good luck with your medicine and depression. I suffer from depression and anxiety so bad as well. It sucks.

I highly recommend weight lifting, yoga(for prevention) and an amino acid called L-theanine (from green tea) for anxiety (taken during an attack, it really works!).

I have anxiety, so I can't keep quiet on things that might help others.

Good luck!
