So today I ate about half a pineapple and by the end my tongue was burning really bad. I used a napkin and realized it was bleeding! I have never had this happen so I was worried. I guess it's just too much acidity at once? It isn't something wrong with the pineapple that I should worry about, right?

(no, i don't have any health problems that would make me bleed :) )

Nah, you probably just ate too much pineapple at once. My mouth starts burning after a few slices.

Pineapple has this effect on many people I know. I am not sure what but i also,if I eat a lot of it, go into a massive stomach ache and pain.If I ate a half on pineapple.OH MY!!! I might die.
Just one of those things.

Heres a funny post I saw about this..it might help?

you have to peel the pineapple first then eat whats inside, you cant just bite into it like an apple=) its like biting a cactus then wondering why your mouth hurts hahahahha

so heres a real one...
Its not just the acid!
Pineapple contains a form of the enzyme protease which acts on protein and digests it. When you eat the pineapple this enzyme is heated to its activation point in your mouth which is about 30 degrees. This then starts to digest the lining of your mouth exposing some of the nerve endings and deeper sensitive layers of skin. When the citric acid and tartic acid touch these exposed areas it can really hurt, and thats the pain that you feel!

Oh I also heard where people who pick pineapples continually also lose their fingerprints due to the bromelain. It wears off the skin.Same as it does in mouth and reveals sore flesh.

I know when I eat too much pineapple it actually affects how other foods taste........like there is NO taste to other foods. I adore fresh pineapple, but I have to limit it if I want to eat anything else and enjoy it :p.

Yeah, I cannot get my children to eat it for this same reason. No bleeding, just burning tongues. My mom is the same way. I haven't experienced this before.

I was just looking at this youtube video where the girl says the core is the most nutritious part of the pineapple. True?

She also uses the leaves - which I never thought of. .Does anyone else?

Actually, I save the cores and cut 'em up into chunks. Then I freeze them for later use in smoothies. Supposedly the cores have the most anti-inflammatory enzyme(bromelain) I believe, in them. After my injuries last fall, I was loading up on green smoothies with these in them - I think it helped, along with the fact that I was also loading up on homeopathic Arnica Montana. Because of the enzymes in pineapple that digest protein, it is often used as a natural peel for the face. A good thing to try as a beauty treatment is some pineapple juice on the face for a few minutes, and then washed off. If you have really sensitive skin though this might not work for you.

the more ripe a pineapple is, the less it will make your mouth burn.

a lot of times pineapples are picked not ripe. they don't ripen really after you pick them i heard. like you think they will, but once you pick them underripe they are under ripe i have read. so unless you live in a tropical pineappleie goodness paradise, you will probably have pinchy tongue unfortunately. =(

when i am in costa rica and eat pineapple it never happens. when i am in the states and i eat it i always suffer from pinchy tongue.

yes, i have also heard this. pineapples that we find in the stores can't ripen properly because they've been picked too soon. so the burning tongue sensation will likely always happen if you eat a decent amount of pineapple.

pineapple used to be my favorite fruit, but now i can't eat more than a cup or so without feeling very uncomfortable!

Try eating it as a Salad mixed with other Fruit that way you are not just eating it back to back.

cut the bottom off your pineapple and set it on a plate in the fridge for 24 hours.

Our local produce guy told my dad, who buys pineapple frequently, that you buy them when they are kinda browning on the outside, not greenish, and then you place it in a shallow bowl of water outside for a day or so, provided it's not cold out. He said that will help it to ripen a bit more. Worth a shot?

EDIT: oh.. i didn't eat the outer part or the leaves.. i didn't mean LITERALLY a whole one... just in case anyone thought i meant the whole thing. lol

Pineapple has made my lips break and burn. I learned my lesson. Now I cut up the pineapple into pieces and blend it. Mmm pineapple smoothies rock!

I am a big fan of pineapples!
Some friends from Malaysia, Thailand, and China taught me this same method and it helps.
After you peel the pineapple, cut them into small pieces and soak them with salt water for about 10 minutes before you eat them.

I eat a whole pineapple by myself sometimes and never have any burn problems. I love pineappel :D. Maby it depends on whether the pineapple is ripe or not ?

OMG, this happened to me when I was pregnant, on my "yellow" phase. I had like 4 pints of fresh pineapple slices & all of a sudden, my mouth was full of blood. I didn't feel the burning at all, and I ran into the office (I worked in a call center) with my hand over my mouth. The supervisor was like, "Anh ah, see, you gotta go home." And I was like, "Blurb I blurb beel bine." She looked at me like I was crazy and snapped, "You're pregnant, and your mouth is bleeding. Go home!"

LOL

I made a spinach pineapple smoothie today and put in the core also, then I ate the rest of the pineapple (no leaves). I bought it half ripe and have had it sitting on the windowsill for a week to ripen - it was perfectly ripe today.
It's the first time I ever put in the core and I think it gives the smoothie more pineapple flavor than just the flesh alone. My mouth burns sometimes if I eat too much pineapple - not today though.
