I have been debating buying a Vitamix. I wondering. Is it very loud? Those of you who have one and use it often, will it wake up the kids in the morning? I usually am up before them and don't like to run the blender because it is so loud. Maybe when school starts up again this will become a non-issue. Please let me know. Thanks!

it's about as loud as any other blender. It may be a bit louder, but it's faster so the noise doesn't last as long as a normal blender. I know you can by a sound proof shell but it may cost more. There are other comparable companies like blendtec who also sell their blenders in a soundproof shell. These are catered toward juice bars and smoothie stores so they may be a bit more expensive.

Well, number one. YOu asked if it would wake up the children? I cannot answer that because I don't know where the location of your kitchen is to their bedrooms!

It is loud, yes. It's about as loud as any blender I would say.

Watch disc 1 of Alissa's DVD set and you'll hear for yourself how loud a Vitamix is :)

My wonderful spouse told me the other day that the Vitamix sound is the most annoying thing he's heard in a long, long time...he goes into another room and shuts the door when I make my smoothies (usually twice a day...).

But, it makes great smoothies, and the noise doesn't last TOO long, and it doesn't bother me. Sort of like a vacuum cleaner: the guy pushing it around doesn't hear it the way the person not pushing it around hears it.

I wouldn't trade this thing for the world. That's my two cents!

Have fun,
Jackie

I have to agree with Jackie. Yes it is loud but very worth it.
Plus I have 2 small children and there room is close to the kitchen, one is a l;ight sleeper the other is a heavy sleeper, hasn't woken them up yet. And I use it alot when they're sleeping (morning, afternoon and night)
My personal opinion, very good investment:)

i used to hear about a blender called k-tec, just as good and powerful as vitamix, but it is quiet. also digital, whatever digital means for blenders

K-Tec! Thank you I was trying to remember the name of that blender. Instead of another Vita Mix, I am buying a K-Tec. Look into it. This blender is smaller so it fits under most counter tops, VM doesn't. K-Tec has a bigger horsepower, also. It is a much better blender.

I forgot to mention that, provided you take care not to get it stained too badly, it is very easy to place a small towel over your blender, to muffle the sound a little. I do this, particularly with my nut grinder - grinding flax makes quite a racket, otherwise :)

I can't afford a pro-grade blender atthe moment, but I've done a fair bit of research about them and I've also come to the conclusion that the K-tec is a better option than the Vitamix, although they are obviously both excellent blenders. Amongst others, EverythingKitchens.com & RawGuru.com stock them. I only wish I could find a UK-compatible (230v) stockist ;)

Just a note on the K-Tec: you may want to call to discuss their warranty and be aware of it thoroughly before purchase. Apparently, they used to cover the blender containers; not any longer. People have been complaining about this change, since the blenders burn out very quickly. Only people who purchased their K-Tec before a certain date will continue to be covered.
I will probably get one (K-Tec), though, next time around. I shouldn't be needing one for a while since my VitaMix is still okay.
Personally, I'm not too happy with VitaMix's customer service OR their "guarantee"; I suppose they don't expect many people to call them on it. When it's supposed to kick in, they don't like to have to make good on it.
Typical business practice nowadays

E.T.A. a correction for clarity: ..."since the blenders burn out very quickly" Should read, ..."since the blender containers burn out very quickly"

I just received the vitamix I'd bought, and had my first attempt at a smoothie this morning around 4:30am (I go into work early on Mondays.). I'm temporarily staying with my folks, and the smoothie maker I'd used prior to this never bothered my dad, who is still in bed at that time. Well, I found out today that the vitamix woke him up. (Not sure if it's just louder, or a different -- sharper -- sound than the other, or what, but unfortunately he heard it.) OUCH!!!! Needless to say, I won't be using it that early while I'm at my parents house ... while I'm here, I'll wait until he's up or take something else to work for breakfast that day.

Lesson learned this morning ... lol ...

Maybe make your smoothie before going to bed and keep it in the frig till morning?
Not as good as making them on the spot, but may work out better with your
schedule?!?!?

Place ear defenders on your dad's head while he's asleep ;)

On a more serious note, have you tried using a thick towel to dampen the sound? It's not perfect, but it does reduce the noise volume by a fair amount.

hehehe ... Arky, that's just way too funny! (and a great idea!) :)

Since it's only one day where I may try to use it before he's awake, I probably won't worry about trying. I can have raw mueseli or oatmeal instead that morning. Probably easier since I'd be on the run, anyway.

Hmmm ... never tried a smoothie that way! Probably wouldn't freeze me the way they tend to now! :) Could be a thought to try, thanks Punky! :)

Since everyone is discussing blenders.... has anyone used a Lequip before? How well do they work?

I've gotta tell ya, the K-tec is worse than the Vitamix. K-tec is 3 horsepower as opposed to Vitamix's 2. It is so dang loud, I actually use earplugs when I use it.

Great warantee, though, I've had the whole thing rebuilt for free as well as get my containers replaced all the time. However, if I ever buy another, I'd get the Vitamix. I've used both and they both have their pro's and con's, I think the Vitamix is probably the best bet.

I've done a lot of reading and research on both of these blenders for the past month and finally decided on the Vita-Mix. I think both are wonderful for many reasons and when it came down to it I did have a hard time deciding!

But my new Vita-Mix should be here within a week and I can't wait!

I work at a store that use to carry Lequip juicers and they were always being returned for all sorts of problems...I don't know if that's any indication about their blenders though....
