View Full Version : Is 450 calories too much for a morning smoothie?

So I was telling my mom jokingly that I practically put the whole fridge in my morning green smoothie and she said, "Boy, that sounds like ALOT of calories!"
I got to thinking about it. So I added everything up and it comes to 450 calories for the whole thing. And yes, I drink the whole thing. It's delicious and I totally look forward to my mornings because of it. Plus, I'm 31 weeks pregnant so I figure this way I'll get some too! Ha, ha!

But seriously, is that too many calories for a breakfast smoothie (even when not pregnant :o)?

I don't think so.

I think my am smoothies are about the same 400-500 calories.

I'll have about the same thing for lunch.

A small snack.

And about a 500-600 calorie dinner.

So for me that's only about 1800 cals/day.

AN D YOUR PREGGERS!

My being preggers seemed to be my only saving grace in her opinion for "eating" so much. This from the lady who measures out 1/2 cup Cheerios and 1/4 cup oats for breakfast! :p

editing to add and clarify: my mom is the one who is counting out her Cheerio calories

Nope, just got curious after the discussion with my mom (and wanted some ammo to fire back if it came up again :D ). SHE's the one concerned with calories - not me.

Having a 450 calorie smoothie filled with, I assume, high quality nutrition at 31 weeks pregnant will allow your gestating bub to gets all s/he needs from your circulating bloodstream rather than leeching vitamins and minerals from your bones, leaving you with osteoporosis or other hideoous nutritional deficiencies:) Enjoy!

I don't think that's alot! My morning smoothies are about the same & I'm not pregnant....it's not so much about the calories as it is getting all the nutrition your body is asking of you. I think you would know if you were eating too much.

Here's my addiction in a nutshell:

1 banana
2 rings pineapple
1/2 avocado
1 stalk celery
heaping handful of spinach
handful other green
handful frozen blueberries
four large frozen strawberries
approx. 1 cup water
approx. 1/3 -1/2 cup juice (orange, cranberry, pomagranite, etc.)

I assume it's pretty nutritious........even better if it can help keep "me" in tact! lol

How does it taste? It will be so cool to hear how your delivery goes :) Best of wishes to you. I never count calories LOL. SO far my smoothies these past 3 days have been boring the same today I added gojis. FRozen passionfruit pulp ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO FIND PASSIONFRUIT in Minnesota for less than $5 at whole foods? Handful of frozen trader joe's Mangos and a handful of frozen pineapple I froze myself, maybe agave. Water. Ran out of young coconuts.

Oh my God. Keep smoothy-ing, gorgeous pregnant woman! I have worked with entire populations who hardly eat a single serve of all these items during their entire pregnancy. Not ok. So it is lovely to see you are so abundant in a wealth of nutrition!

ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO FIND PASSIONFRUIT in Minnesota

Sorry, no, but couldn't help but laugh! Finding passionfruit in Minnesota would be about as likely as me finding, um, deer? in Australia:) Good luck though!

Of course, being raw, the taste will vary slightly from day to day even using the same ingredients but in general.......DELICIOUS! I don't know if it is really that good or if it's the hormones but I am a happy camper every morning I get my hands on it! :D

eta: oh, and I'm curious about how the delivery will go as well. It's a planned c-sec, due to two prior, and I'd love to know if my body will recover better and easier due to better eating and nutrition.

I wish I had been so thoughtful/knowledgeable about nutrition for my other two pregnancies but I guess it's a "live and learn and hindsight is 20/20" thing. I just try to keep learning though.

I've got to chuckle at this one, too! And the deer in Australia! Too funny! I'd be glad to send some to you, ha! - we're overrun here!

I was just reading an article of Frederic Patenaude on the difference between SAD and RAW calories and food amounts. Basically, with SAD the amount of food you can eat is much less because, the calories are high in processed - prepackaged foods. With RAW your the amount of food you can eat is much higher because of the lower calories in Raw Fruits and Veggies, obviously! :) hehehe!

Your smoothie looks really Yummy!

Not at all. A calorie is not just a calorie after all. Especially in the raw food world :)

Have you checked the co-ops? Although I was just at Seward yesterday and it seems that their big move/upgrade upgraded the prices too so...good luck!
