Hello, my introduction to raw food happened about six weeks ago when I was channel surfing on a Sunday afternoon and wound up on the Food Network expecting to see a cooking competition of some sort. Instead they had a show on curing diabetes in 21-days on a raw food diet. Huh? I’m a type II diabetic and everyone knows there is no cure.

Not sure why the Food network showed it but, after figuring out it wasn’t a infomercial for some strange elixir, I watched it with great interest. Afterward, I searched the web, found the Tree of Life (http://www.treeoflife.nu/) and watched several videos on their site and others I found on YouTube. I did more research the following week, including checking a few books out from the library.

The idea intrigued me and I decided to taper into eating 100% raw as I had a stocked fridge. Then I’d try eating a raw food diet for 30-days. Doc had just just doubled one of my blood pressure meds and my blood pressure was still too high and I didn’t like what he was proposing next. At that point I’d eat Soylent Green if it got me off the meds. Figured if it works I’ll stick with it, if not, I’d look for a plan C.

I had to have a blood work done before my 30-day trial started but the results were pretty good for 2-weeks of being maybe 50-60% raw. Told the doc what my intentions were and what I expected to happen. He’s skeptical but was nice enough to tell me how to safely taper off my meds. So far I’ve cut one med in half and expect better results once I get the hang of things.

Luckily, I love to learn and like food prep. Bought the equipment (juicer, dehydrator, blender, etc.) and loaded up with books and staples so I can make most recipes without needing to go shopping everyday. I have wheatgrass growing in my living room and all my friends think I’ve lost it. Even my dog is considering putting herself up for adoption after seeing what I’m eating. :)

So far, it’s been a fun adventure and I definitely need a place to hang out and talk and learn more about raw food.

Welcome Visorblue,
We used to live in Phoenix but moved back to Massachusetts a couple years ago. You will find lots of support and helpful people and ideas here. I am quite new to raw as well and although it has been challenging to me I know I have been feeling lots better when I am eating raw and not so good when I'm not.

Hi and thanks for the warm welcomes!

I decided to slowly test try eating raw but as soon as I did all the lights turned green and things I thought would be nice to have later, if I liked it, started falling my way. When I get that kind of response I take it as a signal that I'm doing the right thing and just go for it, so I dove in with both feet.

The only "downsides" to me are the pre-planning, which I'm adapting to. I quickly discovered that you can't just find an interesting sounding recipe and run with it. I'd thought that since you aren't cooking the food it would be quick and easy -- I've been wrong before. I discovered that you have to get some supplies (and really hunt for some), soak nuts and seeds for hours and then dehydrate for hours. So, initially, the spur of the moment idea was out except for salads, lettuce wraps, and zucchini spaghetti.

Now that I have a good supply of the staples and necessary equipment I can make most things and I'm starting to make things that allow me to make quick meals later; breads, meatless meatballs and patties, snack bars/cookies, etc.

I like food prep so this is a fun and tasty process. :)

As far as a "cure" for diabetes I'm not sure. A nice and natural treatment, sure, I can accept that. From my reading it's a treatment and prevention for a lot of nasty things. And a tasty one at that.

Hi,

I'm figuring things out. Initially, it was all so overwhelming and new. Checked out a pile of books from the library, surfed and watched videos, read material, etc. Kind of bizarre how little I knew about food since I'd been eating it for so long -- blindly. Lots of eye-opening and new discoveries.

Thanks Eva, I'm usually a happy and "up" person.

I'll get active soon as my friends really want me to talk about something else. :D

Time for new friends. :p
