so I finally got a bag of the really raw cashews!
OW! Pricey!
What are your favorite recipes? I'm not too big into desserts really, and my only other raw nuts are almonds. Can get a hold of most any veggies.
What are your favs?
Hey,
Yeah, I'm not really into the dessert thing as well. I find myself using my cashews for cream sauces...the one I usually rely on most is just a simple "Sour Cream Sauce"...It is so easy and its really quick and easy to adapt the flavor to suit different meals. I use it in my wraps, falafels (sp?), pasta and I just recently used it to top off my mexican stuffed bell pepper...yum. The basic recipe goes something like this.......
Raw cashews
lots of lemon
garlic powder
salt
pepper
a little water
whirl it up in a blender until really creamy. (I use a Vitamix)
add in:
for a cheezy flavor....nutritional yeast
for a savory white sauce....I add some tamari
for an alfredo....I add both yeast and tamari along with some basil etc...
for a sweet sauce.....omit the garlic & pepper....add dates, agave or raw honey.
The add in list can go on and on....;)
I almost always have this basic cashew sauce in my fridge...it is one of my staples. :)

Cheddar Cheese Sauce
1 sm Red Bell Pepper, chop or blend 1st
1 cup Cashews
½-1 tsp Salt
2 Tbs Lemon or Lime juice
Cayenne or Jalapeno pepper
Optional: Garlic or Onion
Blend. Chill to get thicker. Spread on tomatoes or other.
Broccoli Soup
1 cup Cashews
2 cups Broccoli
1 Avocado
1 tsp Salt
2 tsp mixed Spices
3 cups Water
Blend.
Where do you get your cashews? How much are you paying?
As of now, I get mine from Trader Joe's. Usually 16 ounces/ 1 LB. for a little over $5.00.
Nuts are soo expensive...I have yet to get Macadamia nuts cuz of the price, I am always on the look out for good deals etc... :D
Ohh yeah...Broccoli soup! yep yep...thats good to...yum. :D

One day I replaced pine nuts with cashew for a pesto sauce. I had an intense craving for pesto (this happens quite often :p) and had all of the ingredients to make it except pine nuts or walnuts. I had a bunch of left over cashews so I figured why not? It makes it really creamy and yummy.

I heard that heat is used in the shelling of cashews - they have a poisons coating somewhere.
At the local raw food restaurant - ~3 miles away - they have some pantry items, I got david wolfe approved brand - like 18 dollars for a pound! That's why I say OUCH!
I don't want any wasted on a recipe gone wrong!

not if its handshelled. david wolfe prices things too high when you can get better deals elsewhere. i always pay under $10 per pound.

Wow that is cheap. I think I pay about $6 for 2 cups of cashews up here. I am trying to not buy too many nuts at once as that can add up to your whole grocery bill!
And where do you find nutritional yeast? I have yet to see it anywhere
