View Full Version : Where do you live?

I thought we could let people know where we live as we might be surprised that someone is close. Also we can discuss any pros and cons of being raw where we live. It might give someone some help to overcome a challenge.
I'll go first. I live in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Farm markets are great in the summer and early fall. The city has a very good co-op near downtown. The chain grocery stores are doing better on organic but it isn't embraced like it should be. I went to a farm market and asked about organic. He said, "what do you mean?" Now there's a big clue. He used as little as he could once I explained it to him.

Hi Kristi,
Im very fortunate to live in southern CA where there is a LOT of raw stuff going on.
There are a bunch of raw food restaurants here and more to open within the year. There are also Mothers markets here and they have all organic fruits and veggies and everything else you can imagine. They carry loads of prepared raw foods, like the crackers, cookies, breads, etc.
They have a cafe inside also thats serves a great deal of raw stuff.
So, i guess i am fortunate to live in a place thats so abundant with raw foods.
The only challenge i have it at work, i work in a hospital! But its ok since i have the support of my raw boyfriend and this area is thriving with raw foods and people!

I live in Southern Maryland - very little happening in my area - I suppose I could travel to DC or Balt, but it is not convient. Most people ask me 'what is raw'

No one around here knows of raw except one person that I've found. I found her on living and raw foods board and she lives right here in Fort Wayne. We emailed for awhile then met at the co-op. We are fast friends now. She's not raw but is vegan. She has taught me so much.

Oh Pam! That sounds like heaven!!!
I moved from Seattle to Des Moines less than a year ago. Of course, Seattle would have been a great place to go raw, but it is what it is.
Des Moines, heartland of America...corn, beef, pork, corn are the major food groups. Y'all know the great Iowa State Fair is on right now? A 2-page spread on it in USA today Monday. The place for fried snickers bars, pork-chops-on-a-stick, fried everything! Fried meatballs on a stick, fried waffles coated in chocolate. Ugh...sounds just sick. Actually, sounds like good inspiration huh? Do some people watching and find inspiration for staying raw.
There's some organic coops around here but I haven't checked them out. There's a good farmers market every Saturday morning, really good. But.. the only health food store in town is really sad, I mean REALLY sad--very little organic food space, maybe 20x20 feet? Whole Foods would kick butt if they came! Des Moines is actually not a bad place, I'm really surprised how much I like it (having grown up in Colorado and lived in Seattle). It's pretty affluent with lots of banking and insurance jobs, so hopefully its a matter of time before WF comes to town. I get to Denver and Phoenix regularly, and get my WF fix there!

Hi Everyone,
I live in Altoona, PA.
There are a few things here but not much.
I may be moving shortly though, and thoughts as to where a good raw place to live is?
I'm thinking about Arizona, anyone from there?
Much Love,

Ahhh, I love Arizona! Phoenix? I was just there, I was hoping to find a raw restaurant. There's one that serves at a raw coop but only Mon-Fri and I was there on a weekend.

Hi all,
I am sure I am the only Italian here!
I live close to Venice, and I have been raw for 1 year. My boyfriend is British, and into raw from a longer time.
It is nice to be raw here, we have nice fruit, even if not so much tropical fruit, and because we are helping some friends that have an organic farm, we are able to eat most of the vegetables that we grow.
Anyway, the rawfood lifestyle is really unknown in Italy. I have my website (www.eco-centric.it) with my journals and photo, to try and promote the raw life, but I am receiving a lot of negativity from people, and sometimes this makes me feel like giving up the website and stopping my efforts about providing information. I also have to say that things are better with friends that know me, they are curious, and it is great to see that some of them have started to introduce more raw into their lifes! :-)
Love,
Sara

Hi, everyone
I live in Mountain Home, Idaho, population under 12,000, and I'm sure I'm the only one raw here. Boise is about 50 miles away, and I work there. There is a wonderful co-op there that has a lot of good produce, raw crackers, breads, (but no young cocos). There is no raw community that I can discover, but someone has to be buying those raw crackers, right?
Anyway, I'm grateful especially to Alissa, for having written her cookbook when I was ready for it, and to all of you that went before me. Don't get discouraged, Sara!
Anyone have thoughts on starting a raw foods community? I thought I'd post something on the bulletin board at the co-op.
Love to all,
Kathy (Sadii)
Hi Everyone,
I'm from Vidor, Texas, 10 miles from the swamps of Loisianna, in the Piney woods of Southeast Texas. Not much here for raw foodist. The nearest good source of organic food is 80 miles away in Houston. I did manage to plant myself an orchard of 400 fruit trees though.

Cool Kirk! Are your trees organic? What kind of trees?
Hi Smasty,
Yes all my trees are organic. When they were planted I wouldn't let them put anything but mulch around them. I have over 70 fig trees (texas celeste and brown turkey),apricot, thick skin Georgia peach, thin skined peach, golden delicious apple, small red apple, japanese persimon, pear, plum, english walnut, and pecan. I also have over a mile of fenceline and am planning on putting blackberries, wild dewberries, and muskadimes (wild grape) all around my yard. When I first had my yard planted, someone told me that I couldn't possibly use that much and I told them that I had been so blessed that it was time for me to spread the blessing around. Whoever wanted or had need of any of it could come pick it for free.......Kirk

Hey Kristi,
Fort Wayne sounds a bit boring. I'm here in Connnecticut. It's great. The shoreline to the south and the Vermont Mountains to the north. Cape Cod just 2 hours away and Boston and NYC less than 3 hours by car. Biking and hiking and everything in between. New England is too cool.
I"ve only traveled I-80 thru Indiana. I've traveled the USA a few times by car. Most of America is very flat.
So where do I live. A small hamlet in Connecticut.
Peace my friend Kristi ...you add some much to this site.
I wish you the best!!!!!!!

I'm in Detroit, MI. I know only 2 other raw people here...my husband's friend and my neighbor (a 70+ year-old woman who is FULL of vigor and on absolutely NO meds or anything!).
We will soon be moving to Olympia, WA, though...hopefully by this time next year!

Yes, M.B., Northern Indiana is quite flat and uneventful. Our topography variances is corn then beans, then corn, then beans. Southern Indiana is a lot more hills and forests.
Hey, Rawkinlocs! I lived in Detroit for about 1 year and my mom & one sis lived there for awhile. What takes you to Olympia, WA? Sue (smasty) just moved from WA but I'm not sure which city.

Hey, Rawkinlocs! I lived in Detroit for about 1 year and my mom & one sis lived there for awhile. What takes you to Olympia, WA? Sue (smasty) just moved from WA but I'm not sure which city.
Hey Kristi,
Well, we moved to WA (Tacoma) back in '91 (ministry took us there) and we fell in love with the Pacific NW! Beautiful place, it is.
We had to come back home because my husband had become VERY ill with thyroid disease (hyperthyroidism or Grave's Disease) and he just recently told me that the main reason he agreed to move back here was so I'd be near family because he was ready to die
 :(
I didn't know this at the time...I thought we had moved back because when he became ill, he lost his job, we lost our brand new (built from the ground) home and we just needed to be near family during such a trying time. I had no idea that was going through his mind. But he recovered and it was his sickness that led us on the path of finding health through natural means.
But anyway, not to get too off topic, we really love WA and it's always been in our hearts as our home. I was born and raised here in Detroit and as a child, things were very different. It wasn't so bad. But now, in this day and age, Detroit has gotten a lot worse and it's not the best place to raise children. I think WA is a better place to raise a family on many different levels (certain parts of WA, anyway...don't care much for Seattle...kinda reminds me of here).
So, we feel it's soon time to go back and spend the rest of our lives there. We chose Olympia this time because upon his visits there, he says it's quiet and very laid back and that's precisely what I want. I don't want big city living anymore...just nice, quiet, serene living.
Eventually, I'd like for us to find a nice little area and buy some land and build on it and grow our own fruits and veggies and have a fasting cottage and just a place where we and others can relax and eat raw and heal.
Kristi

Just north of Louisville, KY. I work in L'ville, and we just moved back to Indiana after living in the big bad city for a couple of years. There's a raw food group that meets in Louisville once a month. I used to go to the meetings somewhat regularly, but haven't been in quite some time. I got to meet and hear Paul Nison speak at that group, so that was pretty cool. Seemed like a nice guy.

Hi!
I live in Belgium,in a very small village called Schendelbeke. All trees surround me and I think it's great living in the countryside.....
Hi everyone - I am in Southeast Queensland, Australia, in a little town about 20 mins from the beach. I love it. Today is my first day 100% raw, previous to that I have bought organic, which is quite readily available, but have cooked mostly. My partner is a meat and veg man and therefore I have no illusions about his joining my healthy lifestyle. Maybe later when he sees the new healthy me??? We have a veg garden which is great. We have chooks, so eggs may need to feature in my life, altho at the moment I am giving away plenty. We planted a couple of citrus trees last weekend (nothing like Kirks orchard - which sounds amazing) which hopefully will help with the fruit supply in months to come. We are coming into our summer now so hopefully being a new raw recruit will not be as difficult as for some of you who have to cope with severe winters. Thank you all for the info and motivation.

Hi, I am from the north shore of Massachusettes. I grew up in Beverly which is next to Gloucester and Ipswich. We just moved to New Hampshire in january. We built a log home in the woods and I am enjoying this , but miss access to a close health food store and we also had a raw food restaurant where I am from! I have been ordering organic greens online from Diamond organics in California--and they also have raw crackers and a great sunflower bread.
Seems like everyone is from all over the world. what a mixed group. I am going to visit my sister in California next week in LA. does anyone know of a raw restaurant there? there must be one!

Hello everyone :)
I live in Okemos MI. I don't know anyone here who is raw. Although I've only been raw a few weeks and I haven't even told anyone. I guess I feel like this is a really personal decision. It's nice to come here and read the boards though. Very supportive and informative! :) For the most part people just think I am eating healthy and don't say anything as I've lost 70 lbs in the last year but still have another 40-50 to go before I'm a healthy weight.
Eating raw has made me feel and look better than ever before. I'm very happy to be here. :o
Nice to meet you all!
Peace

Welcome Peaceful~
It's ok not to tell anyone if that is what works best for you! Congrats on the 70 lbs. What an awesome achievement. Have you lost it all on a raw diet? With 70lbs in the past the rest will be easier for you. I understand about no one around you being raw. I live in Fort Wayne, Indiana....how far apart are we? No one here is doing it that I'm aware of. If it wasn't for Alissa and the support on this board, I'd be in trouble. We do have a good food co-op and a few have heard of it. It is a personal decision. I only share the info with a few people (or if I'm in a situation where I may weaken-it keeps me accountable.)
Good luck and welcome and ask us for help, if needed.
Christine,
There are so many great restaurants in or near LA!
Do a search and you'll find tons!
Yes, diamond organics is great, ive used them many times!
Welcome to the boards and keep us posted on your trip to LA. Let us know how the restaurants are that you visit.

Thanks Kristi :)
Actually, I lost the first 55 lbs on a lowcarb diet. Although I was losing weight I just didn't feel "right" and so I started searching for ways to adjust my diet and keep losing. Let me tell you the past few months and 15lbs have been very enlightening. I went from low-carb to no-carb for awhile losing weight but feeling a real mess. Then I decided to spend a couple of weeks just listening to my body and you know what it said? "Stop eating meat!" So I started researching vegetarianism, veganism...and finally made my way to raw foods. What has been most astounding is not only how much better I feel, but also how eating raw has seemingly changed my appearance. I am suddenly getting compliments all over the place about how I am looking so healthy and happy. And it's only been 3 weeks! I can't imagine how I'll be feeling in 6 months...or 6 years!
With everything that I've been through that has moved me toward better health I am grateful. I have friends that are still low carbing and they are happy. I never say anything bad to them about their food choices. I think that seeing me feel and look better will be the best example that I could give them as encouragement to put more live and fresh food into their bodies.
Whew...didn't expect to write that much. :)
Just glad to be here and be able to talk about this.
Peace

Hi, I'm Melissa - live in Tappan, NY (Rockland County) and work in NYC. I am a complete and absolute compulsive overeater who just can not take it anymore (I'm currently yo-yoing between 215 and 220lbs  ). I sense instinctively that raw is the answer - I'm just having a very, very hard time giving up caffeine. I tried to give it up once and I had a migraine that lasted three weeks - it left for two days and came back again and at that point I broke down and had some coffee. So this journey I desperately need and want is having a hard time taking off. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
On another note, I have to give my thanks to all of you for your inspiration... it is obvious from everyone's stories and examples, that this way of eating is just what the body wants... what amazing transformations, and that's an understatment!!! I know I can have this wonderful life if I can just figure out how to give up the caffeine.
Love to all,
Melissa

Wecome to the board Melissa,
Caffeine was a big hurdle for me also. Every time I tried to give it up my head hurt so badly that it would cause me to go back to drinking it. I was consuning about 36 cups a day.:( I finally found a way to beat it though. Here is what I had to do:
for one week I made my coffee with 50% caffinated and 50% decaffinated.
the next week it was 25% caffinated and 75% decaffinated.
the next week was 10% caffinated and 90% decaffinated.
the next week was totally decaffinated.
After that I quite. There were still some headaches but not so severe that I couldn't stand them. I replaced my caffine with room tempature water and fresh fruit and vegetable juices.
hope this will help---kirk

I agree ThunderDancer, this is brilliant advice, I will start first thing tomorrow. My migraine was so bad I coudn't walk. I have never experienced anything like it... so I will try this and see how it goes. I REALLY want this - I want to have a normal body and not hate myself the way I do now, and I want to have the energy that a healthy body has... it is definitely worth giving up caffeine for...
thanks so much for your advice!

Hey...RAW IS THE CURE FOR COMPULSIVE OVEREATING! When I reached bottom and joined OA looking for the answer (OA helped a lot, looking at it spiritually helped a lot)....Raw cured me. It's hard getting used to the feeling of lack of fullness at first. But then it's easy.

Here between Denver and Boulder. We have raw group going in Boulder too. Great people as well.
I'm married to a real Italian from Sicily--Palermo, Italy who has not had meat in over 26 years or any animal products like me too. He also speaks Italian. No pasta, no animal products, but plenty of produce. Eating very simply these days. Love gourmet when at a raw gathering, but here fresh salads does it along with fruits. Been easy on nuts/seeds too.

I am in Aumsville, Oregon which is just outside of Salem and an hour south of Portland. There is a pretty good raw community in Portland but it's too far away for me to really do anything with it very often. Still, we have a good health food store in Salem that sells a large variety of organic produce, and my husband and friends think I'm a little nutty but will try anything I make or cut up.
I wanna be Kirk's neighbor, though -- I LOVE figs!!!
-- Lyis
:) I love um too. Thats why I planted so many. People around here look at me as if I'm crazy. Someone asked me if I were gonna sell them to Nabissco for fig newtons :)
Actually, I planted them because in my childhood I spent my summers laying across the limbs high in the trees eating figs and daydreaming.

Sorry it took so long for me to post, we went away this past weekend and I didn't have access to a computer.
Yes, Smasty, I had a wrangler for about five years... I loved that jeep!!!! It was old when I bought it and now we have a rover, which is nice, but not the same :( !!! I, like you, did OA, and when that failed, I did OA Greysheet (folks, it just does not get stricter than that!!!!) I did Greysheet for 2 years until I just couldn't take it anymore. After I had my gallballer removed in 1998, I went back to Greysheet and gained weight! I've been miserable ever since - and of course, eating all the while. What impressed me the most when I discovered "raw" were the pictures. People who do this are not just 'thin' - they're vibrant, alive, healthy, energetic... I want all of that AND I want to be thin!!! I don't care what the dh or the dd think, too bad! And if I can get through their cynical attitudes, I can get through anybody's!
Thanks so much for your (and everyone's) example, I really do plan on being the next great story!
Love to all,
Melissa

Hi Everyone,
I live in Wichita Kansas and am just starting to get involved in eating raw. I really haven't desired to eat red meat for a number of years and am now getting off meat totally. hehe amazing when one listens to their body how accurate it can be. :)
Kirk thank you for your suggestion on how to get rid of the coffee habit. I have drank coffee for over 20 years and those headaches are really bad sometimes when you go cold turkey on it.
Hi Curtis,
Your very welcome :). Good luck with kicking the coffee habit! Do expect a little discomfort but its at least bearable. I think the headaches are caused by vasocontriction in the brain when the caffine level gets to low, but if you slowly decrease the caffeine levels it gives the body time to adjust....kirk

I haven't shared on this board in quite awhile, as I went back to "cooked" after 99 days raw! (Jan to April). I was ashamed that after seeing astounding results first hand, I got sucked back in to the social "norm" SAD way of eating again. However, the reality of illness from poor food choices was waiting for me when I started eating cooked food again and the consequences have been, the return of fibro symptoms, severe pms, bad attitude, depression and of course, bloating and weight gain, (about 15-18 lbs.!) I guess you can say I've been "scared raw". I don't want to go back to a life of constant sickness, medication and limitations. What I have learned from this unpleasant experience is that once you have seen the light, it's no longer possible to live comfortably in the dark. (In ignorance) It's tough to start over and I need alot of help. I live in a town of about 5,000 and the other 4,999 are definitely not into raw food, including my new husband of 6 months. He does love the things I make though and supports me as long as he can have his meat and potatoes too.

I live in Kingston, Ontario, Canada which is about 2.5 hours east of Toronto, and about 45 mins North of Watertown, NY. I seriously am starting to think I'm the only raw foodist here, in a city of about 125,000. It's frustrating. No young coconuts, and the health food stores don't seem to know what "RAW" means. They seem to think that "raw" nuts just means that they're not roasted. Sigh! I think I might put up a flyer at the big health food store on their totally overcrowded bulletin board and see if anyone notices it. LOL!
Secret Heart, on our last visit to Toronto we went to "Live", it was good! :)

I live in Pacifica, CA. I live about 20 minutes away from Cafe Gratitude and about 30 minutes away from Alive. Both of these restaurants are in San Francisco. I am lucky to have these two places and lucky to have easy access to lots and lots of fresh, organic produce. Even in Pacifica, there are at least 2 places I can buy organic produce on a regular basis.
About 4 or 5 months (?) ago, I met with about 10 people from this site at Cafe Gratitude. We had a great time, and would love to do it again.
I used to always have this site up and running on my computer, but my daily life has changed. I now have a full time job! I am still 99% raw, fully enjoy it, but miss reading about other people's experiences.
This is a great site for people that need or want some acknowledgment that their lifestyle is the way to go.
So, if anyone in the S.F. Bay Area would like to get meet at Cafe Gratitude or Alive, let me know in an e-mail to tracyinfo@aol.com
Blessings.

Dragggon and I live in
Actual mailing address is
Roy, Washington
closest city, is NOT Roy, but actually
McKenna, Washington
Our phone is from another city and county all together, so if you ask information for our phone number you have to ask for
Yelm, Washington
If you want to know where we live and you live in either Seattle or Tacoma or Olympia, you say:
Near the Mountain
if you live close to us, in one of the above mentioned smaller towns, you say:
On Hart's Lake
and if you are near Hart's Lake and trying to find us, you say:
the street past Wilcox Farms
and if you are at Wilcox farms, you say:
the pink house across the lake
but my favorite way to say where I live is:
The Old Goe place, that used to have that patio cover across the front, you'll find it for sure, just keep drivin', it's only about 10 miles down that road, give 'er take
This is the charm of living in the country, where your neighbors may be 10 feet away, 1 mile away, or across the lake, and eveyone, knows everyone, or at least where they live, and what they drive.
I reckognize people by their animals, when I see the beagle, I know he belongs to the people in the cabin, across the lake, when I see the other black lab, I know he belongs up the hill, across from the "elk" field, when I see the rotweiler, I know he belongs to Clyde up the road. and that little white fluffy dog, he doesn't belong here, so he may need some help. etc.

I'm on Olympia, WA but originally from Detroit, MI.
Funny thing, it was actually EASIER to be raw in Detroit! I thought it would be easier here, but there, I had much lower prices to work with. My trusty fruit market with apples at .59 a pound ALL the time...oranges by the case for $12, $15, or $20 depending on the kind, size, etc.; bananas for .39 a pound; and a whole array of various things...GOSH I miss that fruit market! :(
But being raw in WA is "okay" so far. I think if I were in Seattle it might be slightly different. I think I expected more health-conscious people to be here in Olympia as well.

Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, here. A suburb of Tulsa. I started a small group of raw foodists at a local healthfoods store, but it became co-opted by a bunch of primal diet fans. So now they get together to eat their raw meat, and I'm left looking for a few raw vegetarians. :(

How fun reading where everybody lives.
I live in northern Montana, in a little town called Columbia Falls, right near Glacier National Park. It is extremely beautiful and majestic here in the rockies.
Everywhere you can see, you are surrounded by mountains. The wildlife include deer, elk, cougars, brown and grizzly bears, big horn sheep, mountain goats and our neighbours. oops, did I say that out loud? ;)

Being close to a big city and populous area, we have access to wholesale organic produce from some big distributors. Able to buy bulk produce much cheaper that way (click here) (http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7568&highlight=Cincinnati)
We have a Trader Joe's in Cincinnati and a Wild Oats. There's only one place in downtown Cincinnati that juices and that is "Total Juice". They have Wheatgrass served up by Joe - a great guy. :D
I've met one other RAW food person here and that's all I know about so far. There are a good many of Hallelujah Acres health ministers in the area too. There's also one other RAW person on this forum.

I'm near Olivet, MI. Takes me about 40 minutes to get to the best health food store around and the co-op, but the selection of stuff available is good though a lot of it has traveled a long way to get here. There is a local raw foods group that has monthly potlucks, so I have some contact with others who are eating raw.
We are tucked into the foothills of south Orange County, California. We have some wonderful farmer's markets in our area and get most of what we need there to help support our local organic farmers. I love Whole Foods, and Wild Oats (also known as Henry's around here). We also have Mother's Markets, the local hfs and rawbie hang-out. Mother's has been a wealth of information on the living foods lifestyle and has been known to carry raw dishes in their wonderful deli. We have some excellent raw food restaurants: Au Lac and Good Mood Food (my favorite) come to mind.

I was born in Columbia, South Carolina. Lived in Irmo and Columbia area until I was 10. Moved about a hour or so to Aiken, SC and have been here ever since. http://www.aiken.net/
I don't plan on being here forever. Although they are currently building 6400 homes and adding lots of shopping strips, this place is really geared toward a retirement community. It has some great history and walking around downtown is nice, but it's just gotten too modernized down there. There are some exceptional things about Aiken, but it doesn't really fit my soul. Nothing raw here, no real art community - not the funky free-spirit stuff, anyway. hard to explain.
Aiken would be a nice place to retire to, though, I suppose. Paul Newman's wife is from this area. This is horse country, too. There is a really beautiful Hopeland Gardens here, as well. I think it was also voted one of the top 10 all-american cities. heh. A nuclear plant is close by, as well.

I am from Kentucky. Can you imagine the looks I get when people find out I am vegetarian much less when I tell them I prefer to eat raw ? Someone once told me that eating raw meat was bad for me. Eh ? Yeah I nearly ralphed right there. I am actually one of those people who get that "Do you eat chicken" questions. Ahhh the bible belt. NE who, In the summer we have wonderful farmers markets but in the fall and winter notsomuch. I rely on my local Wild Oats market to supply great organic vegetables.
I am not very raw, if I had to pick a percentage I would say 30-40% but I am working my way up. I was very excited to see the great number of Raw books that WO started selling along with their sprouting section, which is something I am dying to try.

I live in a little town on the south coast of Ireland called Kinsale. It has very little industry and is mainly fishing tourism and lots of bars and sad restaurants. I am lucky because I was in that industry for many years and if we need to go to a restaurant with friends then I can prepare my food at home and I know enough of the owners to take it with me and they serve my own food to me. There are advantages to living in a small town.
I buy very little food in the town and once a week I drive to the city (about 20 mins) to the organic shop and stock up. We do not have such things as Farmers Markets.

we have under 3,000 people mainly here for the military base. Warrensburg is a nearby town and have a market which is not big and not organic. There are many famer's market around but now the season is over. I am 45 minutes from Independence which has a Nature's Pantry that I am a member off. There is also a Wild Oats and Whole foods about an hour and a half away. Kansas City has a huge farmer's market which is open year round and even three days a week and is a little over an hour away. I personally live in an apartment but many people I know do grow their own veggies and fruits, the soil and weather are great around here.
I don't personally know anyone else that is raw--RIBS are huge out here. But I am working on converting a couple people. I am going to go home for Thanksgiving to Lancaster, PA to convert my mom--I think I will get her this time around--I am driving so I hope to be able to stop at great places along the way and see what they have to offer--coming through ST Louis, Terre Haute, Indianapolis, Springfield OH, and Pittsburg. Plus I will be able to take my juicer and all my produce, sprouts, seeds, nuts, and frozen stuff along to cook for her.

I live in Northern VA. If anyone else (i know of one) lives near her I'd be glad to meet you! I think getting a support group, or all of us just meeting up and talking would be nice. I don't know of any other raw person OR support near me. There is only one restraunt in DC and I've heard the surrounding of it is in a crummy area of the city.
I am the ONLY raw person I know, let alone vegan. We have one health food store that just started getting a little section of raw foods, cookies, ect. The grocery stores have a small section of organic foods too. People are supportive and I use the "I'm allergic to almost everything" line to my advantage (I am lol, but they won't think I'm crazy at least). We live in the woods and have a small organic garden in our backyard (I gave up my giant trampoline!!). I also have a small garden of my own with strawberries and a grape vine.
The closest Whole Foods is an hour away, maybe more. We have a new TJ's about 45 minutes away now. They used to have a whole foods, but it was after it was turned into Global foods did we know what Whole Foods was. I'd really like to go to a raw potluck near me or just meet some raw people in person.

I feel very lucky about all that and yet I would like to venture out somewhere less populated. Being born and raised here, I guess I need a change! :) Portland sounds nice or somewhere in Washington state. I never know what to say when people ask me where I am from. I was born in Pasadena Ca., married an Englishman and moved to England where we lived long enough for me to sound English, both my children are English. We then moved back to the US to care for my elderly parents and now reside in WA., Eastside, Seattle.
I miss the cheap local produce from CA., but living in the UK is what opened my eyes to everything "alternative". I was working in a high pressure suit job and left it to work at an amazing oragnic shop in London called Planet Organic at the juice bar! Anyone reading this in the UK when you are next in the city pop in to visit (Bayswater)!
We chose Washington to move to as we thought it was the most affordable place with libral views on healthcare. We also like rainy weather! :p
PS; I saw a post here from Italy - Caio! - I visit Italy fairly often as my daughters god parents live in Milan. I always think of trips to Italy as my gastronomic holidays - the food is soooooo good!

I haven't been raw during a winter yet, so i'll be VERY interested and excited in this newcoming experience when i head back home for the vacation in December.

In fact my friend told me that peanut butter is rare here so she doubted very much if there was almond butter or anything like that. On the plus side ALL the honey in the German Stores is raw so that is kinda nice. At least so far it is. I have found durian as well but no young coconuts and no raw nut butters. But its fun looking.

There are many lovely people here ofcourse- but Dallas just doesn't suit me at all and I have been aching to leave for a long time. Most of my friends from Texas have relocated to Brooklyn, Boston, SanFran, London, etc. I am saving to move to Berlin, Germany, something I want to do within the next two years. Hi all! I am from Singapore. Raw movement is not big (yet?) but I hope to make a change or introduction to it. Heh heh been given a green light to be on a channel that will be broadcasted throughout South East Asia (this channel is as big as what you would have CNN) its called ChannelNewsAsia. I just have no time to put aside a recording just yet, wish me luck!
As for the raw life I lead I get by with the many friends I have here to keep me 'sane' :) I maybe far but you guys are close to my heart! You gave me the strength, reason, knowledge and creativity to stay raw.
Though I may be low in finding raw items as you would find easily there, like cacao nibs or ready raw food-bites (hey we do have Lara Bars here :) but we are high on tropical food items like young coconuts, tropical fruits : rambutans, mangosteens, lychees, longans, dukus, chikus and mmmm durians. In desperate times I would purchase off the net and have it shipped but many times I just have to drool over the many delicious raw-foods available there!
So thank you all and especially BIG thanks to Alissa for this splendid site!

I checked out Karyn's website just before I moved here! I just haven't had the chance to get there yet, between unpacking, job searching and an active 5 yr old. Please Please count me in! I don't really know anyone here yet but I would love to meet with raw fooders. Couldn't think of a better welcome to Chi-town! So who has the details???

I live in Tampa, I moved here from Greenville, SC.
Maybe someone from this area can enlighten me on the best places to shop.
I am new to raw food, so the limited selection is really a problem for me. I see all of these great recipes and then I can't find the items needed to make them.

I am from Missoula Montana. There is a big health food store here with plenty of organic, it's rawsome here for many reasons. I am not much of a winter person, other than that it is beautiful every direction you go and the hiking is unlimited. There is not many raw folk around here but I am planning to change that. I believe it would catch on really well because lots of people into health here.

Husband Paul and I just moved last week from Central CA to Bend OR...a small, high desert community in Central OR. It's very cold right now, with lots of sunshine. Several beautiful snow covered mountains are just a 20 minute drive from here. The Deschutes River runs right through town and we can see a small portion of it through the neighbors yard across the street. There are abundant outdoor activities here, all year round....but, alas, we haven't found a raw community yet. There are only about 65,000 people in a community that doesn't really connect much with others...unlike more urban areas. So, I guess we'll have to travel to Portland, about 2 1/2 hours, to take part in some of their raw potlucks.

Hey, nice to hear where you all are at. Wow I am amazed at how far spread everyone is. To Lyis in Aumsville, Oregon, a very big HELLO to you. I am in Lebanon which is about 45 min south from you. :D I only know of one other raw foodist in my area. I do know of a group that follows the Hallelujah diet about 25 min away. Never visited with them yet, but have been invited to a potluck.

ARIZONA, here! I actually grew up in Southern CA (Oxnard, to be exact) and moved to AZ about 8 years ago when i first met my husband. I currently live in a suberb town 40 miles southeast of Phoenix. :)
The raw movement is really starting to take off here! It's awesome. And there's talk of 2 new raw restaurants in the works for sometime next year - a NY-style raw restaurant and a "fast food" raw restaurant. Can't wait!
Blessings,

Southern CA for 25 years (Now recently moved to Hemet--Inland Empire). Originally from Youngstown, OH although I spent a glorious year and a half in the Portand, OR area two years ago. Absolutely fell in love with the "green" and the fantastic berries at the farmer's markets.
It is so nice to see raw foodists from all over the globe here!

Newport News, Virginia. It's near Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Langley AirForce Base. It's where the nation's aircraft carriers are built. In fact, that's what I work on as an engineer, though I don't like my job. Raw is decent here for fruit. Greens and vegetables lousy, but still looking for sources. Perhaps I will find one soon.

Hello everyone this is Lisa,Im from the beautiful santa clarita,ca......
I'm in sunny Lake Forest in SoCal for the last 15 years and totally love it here. I grew up in Cleveland and SoCal, spent 10 years in Oklahoma City then came back here and aim to stay. We have a pretty active raw community here, some great restaurants such as Au Lac, Good Mood Food Cafe and The Stand that are local and others in San Diego and LA.

I live in Edwardsville, IL, a small city (I think the population is under 30,000). The place is growing like a weed with new developments everywhere. If you heard of Southern Illinois University, it is here. Most people I talk to haven't heard of Edwardsville. It was a whole lot smaller when I was a child. We are near St. Louis, MO (15-25 minutes away). There is a health food store that has been here for quite a while and to be a small scale store, it does well as far as supplying organic fruits and vegetables, the problem is that there isn't much variety. They have a deli which serves lots of nice things but as far as the food having a strictly "raw" emphasis - no. I plan to move to California somewhere near the midpoint of this year and I no I will be surrounded by rawness in L.A. There is a Whole Foods market and a WildOats in St. Louis (about a 50 -60 minute drive to get there). I wish we had a co-op, we do have a farmers market during the summer months. There is a small network of vegetarians but as far as people who live life rawly- still searching....

Hi everybody,
I live here in the nap town area, town of the colts, and the pacers, the indianapolis 500 speedway, David letterman, James dean :D . Northern indiana is flat and filled with lots of fields. But southern Indiana is really hilly. It has great places for hiking and mountain biking, lakes and rivers.
There's a raw pot luck group that meets in I.U. town once a month, have yet to hook up with them.
The hoosier state as well....in the process of moving from southern Indiana to Kokomo.

I'm in Beloit Wisconsin, sandwiched between Rockford IL & Madison WI.
Even thought it's the "Land of beer, cheese & brats" we have a lot of great opportunities for produce. This is a hard time of year though, darned winter :( During the summer there are farmers markets, several CSA's and it seems everyone has a back yard garden. The people at my co-op don't look at my funny when I ask about things and we can get a member discount at 2 other co-ops as well. Even our local grocery store carries a good supply of organic basics, although not as much as my old grocery, it's better than nothing.
I do wish there were more "eating out" options for raw, or at least vegie/vegan foods. Resturants still focus very heavily on the meat & cheese end of the spectrum here. You can see it in the patrons waistlines. I'm also saddened to find no information on any raw support groups IRL. You'd think being 30 minutes from Madison (home of the hippies) that there would be something. Seems the raw madison group has disapeared from the web.
Anyway, that's where we are :)

Also there is a great raw pot luck every month by Halleluja acres ministries person that runs it. It is wonderful.. Next month Paul Nisson is coming to speak. I can't wait... He has written many books.
Take care,

I live in Silverdale, PA (about a 1 hour drive, with traffic, north of Philadelphia). I find it fairly easy to find great organic produce. There is a Whole Foods market ten minutes away, and a raw food store/cafe in Lansdale (10 min. away). There must be other raw people in the area, but I havn't met any........ I can also go to Trader Joe's in King of Prussia, but the drive is not worth the saving on food. They have good raw nut butters there (a couple bucks less than Whole Foods :-P).

Hey Guy's
I live in the Woodlands, Texas....1 hour North of Houston. All of the Farmers Markets, Whole Foods, Central Markets are in Houston.....Hard to make that drive round trip with 2 kids and a very busy schedule! I am also amazed that Houston being the 4th largest city in the US and NO raw dining options :( Sooooo.....SAD! Tried online ordering a delivery- but food spoiled before it arrived-ugh...that TEXAS heat!
Any Raw'rs on the North side up here in the trees who would share in a raw pot-luck event ....maybe meet at a North Shore park for a RAW picnic and live music on Sunday evenings during the summer? There are covered areas with tables at all of the parks in the Woodlands/Spring Area!!!!!
If so just email me and get something coordinated!!!! :D

I'm in Fairfield, Ohio...about 25 miles north of Cincinnati. I really would like to find some raw friends, I think it would help me tremendously. I was about 90% raw last summer and thru the fall...I have been eating horribly since about Christmas and the waistline is showing it. Like someone else said, ignorance is no longer an excuse. I know better and know how great it feels to eat wholesome food. Anyway, its pretty easy to do around here too. I have access to Wild Oats, Trader Joe's and plenty of farmer's markets but my favorite place to shop is only 6 miles from my house...Jungle Jim's. If you are EVER anywhere near Cincinnati, you just have to go to Fairfield and check out Jungle Jim's. Huge organic section...getting bigger all the time. It actually has almost anything I would want or need so I rarely trek over to Wild Oats anymore. You can check Jungle out at junglejims.com....CRAZY place!! If you're ever in town, holler at me...I love taking people on 'tours' of Jungle Jim's and if you've never been there, you literally need a tour guide.
I live in the North Shore area of Massachusetts...sort of close to the NH border. My hubby and I are looking to move in the area and buy a new home:) It is funny b/c I will NOT move to an area that does not have a HFS or carry organic produce.
I would love to find local RAW pals:)

I live in Athens, GA.
I buy all organic foods. We shop at local farmer's markets and also at Earthfare in Athens. Some of the big supermarkets in the area are carrying more and more organic products. There are some Whole Foods about 40 miles away. So, once in a while, for a little road trip, we head over there. There are no raw food restaurants close by yet.
Hey Bootzey I agree - you'd think around Atlanta they'd have more raw food joints. BTW, where do you live, if you don't mind?
Thanks,

I'm in New York City...after living most of my life in TX (Dallas & Houston). It's surprisingly easy and affordable eating raw here, as there are many vendors that set up CHEAP fruit carts on the street. I'm also lucky to have a fruit & veg market on the corner of my block, so I can pop in every day and get everything fresh.

I get fruit really cheap here, but not organic - organic veggies I can buy now, but not on the markets only in special supermarkets. Other raw items are hard to find, I either have to mail order them or, well, not have them ;)

I live in Westminster, Colorado. It is north of Denver but south of Boulder, basically in between but closer to Boulder.
We have a lot of places to purchase organic produce. We get our organic products from Vitamin Cottage and the Farmers Market (which is held in Boulder on Saturdays). The Farmers Market is great because you are able to buy locally grown organic produce.
We also have a co-op in Boulder that sells some raw foods (like raw cocoa nibs, etc). The co-op also has a cafe that is starting to offer some raw food dishes.
The cons of living here... ??? I can't think of any. The organic produce is not overly priced and it is easy to access. :) Well, I do wish that we had a really great raw restaurant so that we could go there on occasions.

I'm right outside Flint, Michigan. There are a couple places I can get organic stuff. Sometimes Meijer has a good price on their organic stuff; or at least not too bad. We live in Milwaukee overlooking Lake Michigan (the east side of the state)part of the time. Increasingly, we also live outside of Maiden Rock, WI (the west side of the state) overlooking Lake Pepin, the widest part of the Mississippi. This put us in striking range of the Ecopolitan Restaurant in Minneapolis. There are not many Raw Fooders in Milwaukee nor in Maiden Rock. However, Milwaukee has the Outpost Coop (3 stores), Riverwest Coop, Beans and Barley, and a great open market that sell organic/biodynamic vegetables and fruits. A Whole Foods and Trader Joes are moving into the area also. Maiden Rock has a number of coops within an hour radius. Our hope is to eventually divide our time between Maiden Rock and Minneapolis.

I have been living in rural Thailand since January 2005.
The thais think I'm crazy that I don't eat rice. :p But I tell them, why fill up on rice when I can eat so many yummy fresh fruits and veggies.
In my yard I have coconut trees, banana trees, papaya tree, kaffir lime trees, lemon grass plants, thai pepper plants, fresh mint plants, fresh basil plants, long bean plants. On my street, which I can pick from, I have mango trees, star fruit trees, tamarind, numerous kinds of wild mushrooms, ALL THE COCONUTS in the world, jackfruit, lychee, longan, etc.
I love living here, but am excited to get back to America. My family is in Texas - Dallas/Ft. Worth area. My love is in upstate NY. My heart says it wants to reside in Austin again!

Hi Brad,
Aotearoa means l"and of the long white cloud", the name given to New Zealand by the Maori
According to Māori legend, Kupe, the great Polynesian navigator came to the South Pacific around 1,200 years ago. His first sight was not of the land itself but of a long white cloud that hovered above it, and so he named it Aotearoa, which in Māori means the Land of the Long White Cloud. The country was later called New Zealand.
