Howdy!
Well my husband was suggesting I try coming up with my 'own' dessert recipe this weekend. So I asked him for suggestions he would enjoy. He wanted a pie or cheesecake with an orange creamsicle flavor. (you can tell he had a very SAD upbringing in regards to food!). From what I understand, these have orange and vanilla mixed together in regards to flavoring. hmmmmmm
I'm thinking of using a good vanilla cheesecake recipe or a white chocolate cheesecake recipe and add oranges (or orange juice), orange zest and homemade vanilla. Perhaps some homemade vanilla almond milk might also be good too. Any suggestions on this project?
How about orange coloring? A little tumeric? Or perhaps drying orange peels and grinding them up in the coffee grinder to get a powder? Anyone try that?
Any help will be appreciated :)
Cheers!

Any natural food coloring advice to get a nice orange color? I'm still pretty new to this :o

carrot juice might work--they sell natural food dyes (specially this time of year for easter eggs)

No no no no no! Orange peels are verrry bitter and might ruin the delicate flavor of the cake! I would juice a carrot and use that to color it.
This cake sounds delicious!! I can't wait to see pictures! ;)

hey i was just thinking...orange peels are bitter, but KUMQUATS are an inside-out fruit...the peel is sweet and the flesh is sour....if the carrot juice adds too much carroty flavor, i wonder about drying and grinding kumquat peels.... or a bit of yellow beet juice mixed with red beet juice... though that might taste "beety"..although i know they use beet for alot of natural colorings...

Oh yeah Kumquats are a great idea and I saw some at the co-op yesterday! However, I did find some organic, vegan natural orange food coloring (Seelect is the brand) at Heatlhy Living in South Burlington on my way home from work. I think I might play around with this stuff over the weekend. Perhaps get a couple different shades of orange going. :D But it wouldn't hurt to also dry some Kumquat peels as well :D

Yeah, actually that would be a great smoothie idea for my husband who has been expressing interest in diversifying his morning smoothies! :)
I had a creamsicle smoothie this week made from vanilla almond milk and frozen oj. I freeze the oj in ice cube so they blend easier in the blender. The smoothie was a light orange color. I wonder how orange juice would do instead of lemon juice in the cheesecake recipes??? Sure sounds good. Cant wait to hear how it turns out.

Peels are bitter, but you should use the ZEST--just take it off with a zester or microplane. I often freeze some for later use.
And use carrot juice for color.
Good luck. Your blog is great! I lived in the Burlington area for 12 years up until last June!

One time I made a fudge-cake kinda thing, & used raw macadamia nut butter, & it lent a really creamcicle taste to it! Seriously!!!

Hiya Trinity, I'm actually going shopping for a few ingredients today and making this 'experiment' tomorrow. The routine is that my husband downloads photos on Monday morning, I then write up my blog and post photos in the afternoon sometime. Gosh, I hope this orangy cake project works out :o

Hi Les, that's so cool you lived in Burlington! I'd love to know more raw foodies in this area! Did you move out of the state?
I'm planning on using some orange zest in the filling as well as a little bit in the crust. I recently purchased a nice zester from Kiss the Cook on Church Street and it works well. (I work on a 4th floor office on the corner of Church Street and Bank Street)
Cheers!
Joyce:)
