Hello, I am still trying to go raw, and am struggling with how much i have to eat. it seems like i'm going to go bankrupt, because for me to safely lose 2 pounds a week, at my weight, i still need to consume at least 2000 calories (plus any additional calories from exercising).

i'm just wondering, what do you eat in a typical day? i'm going for the more "whole foods" approach, instead of fancy recipes, but it seems like it take a whole lot of food to get to that calorie level. i have added nuts, but one 2-pound bag cost me nearly 20 bucks, so i am weary to make those a staple of my diet.... thanks!!

hi-- just a couple suggestions--try using more seeds and cutting down on the nuts. seeds are WAY cheaper and still pretty calorie-rich. sunflower or sesame seeds will cost you under $3.00 a lb, versus a billion dollars for nuts. pumpkin seeds are fairly cheap as well. maybe try some sprouted grains, if they agree with you, as they are fairly cheap as well. personally i cant stand sprouted wheat, but i have had good luck with sprouted pot barley, used it as a rice replacement in warm miso soups with chopped veggies, etc. some people like to use sprouted quinoa too, and raw soaked buckwheat is also a good bet that you can make sort of "porridge" out of. you could also use oats, but they ones from the store are usually not really raw. even so, alot of raw fooders use oat groats and dont have a problem using them, apparently oats are very hardy and even though they are steamed for processing, some of the nutrients are still preserved. use the search tool on this site for more threads on this if you are interested. also, if you are looking for calorie-rich stuff, if there is somewhere like a discount store that you can get avocados cheap, they are calorie rich too. also, maybe not worry so much about calories unless you are still hungry. i mean if its the end of the day and youre not hungry, dont eat more just because you think you need more calories; sometimes your body will feel fuller with less on raw because you are nourishing it with more nutrients etc. some people advise using coconut oil more than other oils because it is supposed to help you feel full as it is immediately used because of the type of fat it is, rather than stored, and it is also supposed to help regulate metabolism. pricey, but still less than your $20 nuts! ;)

good luck

First of all, try to get away from counting calories and just listen to what your body is telling you. It is not unusual to initially drop a few more pounds when you change your eating habits for the better. Usually the goal is an AVERAGE of two pounds a week. That might mean that you drop five pounds one week and one pound for the next couple of weeks. Do a search, there are lots of threads about eating economically. There is a book called Frugal Raw,which gives a lot of tips too. Also, check out some of Aleesha's threads. She has lost quite a bit of weight and averaged two pounds a week.

I find that green smoothies are my friend. I make a large batch first thing in the morning and I take most of it to work with me. I also like raw soups. Avocados can be expensive, but I find them really filling. They are a good source of healthy fat, fiber and nutrients. I also make my own flax seed crackers in the dehydrator. I mix some of my juicing pulp in the crackers for added fiber and flavor. (I hate to waste the pulp).

Hope this helps.

I was about that weight when i started. I ate a lot, but i slowly cut back and retained most of the sugary foods to keep my blood sugar up. Your body wont like the huge rush of sugar in the beginning (just a hint).

For you, I would say get a big bag of almonds. Almonds will give you enough protein to survive to say the least. Eat about 1/4 a cup a day of them. For breakfast, All fruits. For your size, I would say 3 fruits is sufficient. For lunch, I would reccomend eating a large bag of carrots, a fruit and another vegetable of choice. For dinner, a large vege salad with a raw dressing if available. Your body quickly adjusts to not feeling "full" it is mostly mental

Skip the calorie counting

just eat RAW whenever hungry and get a non food oriented, preferabbly physical activity oriented habit...like yoga, walking or pilates

Don't spend money on the instruction for theses activites just get a free visdeo from your local library

Visit friends often and liberate their never used RAW veggies and bits and pieces from the fridge. Lots of folks buy RAW and let it waste before they use it.

FORAGE at whole foods or your local grocer if you are depserate enough!

I'm not 100% raw. But I make a huge green smoothie every morning and sip it throughout the day so I'm getting plenty of water and nutrients. I have cereal in the morning with almond milk and sesame. You can have a handful of seeds, sliced fruits like strawberries as well as raw oats in your cereal.

For lunches and dinners I have big salads with avocado and mushroom with garlic and herbs. Occasionally I have wholemeal bread with humous and sunflower seeds.

I eat a lot of fruit and a lot of nuts/seeds. Seeds are best. I only tend to eat when I'm hungry though so sometimes I skip meals if I'm not in the mood for food and just have a nice smoothie to keep me hydrated.

Avocados are high in calories and very tasty.
I like to cut an avo in half and then use celery sticks as "scoops".
The riper the avo the more like butter they are.

Yeah, forget the calorie counting. Just eat when you're hungry. Your body will tell you when it needs food and will get rid of the weight it needs to get rid of when it needs to get rid of it. Man, if I had to count calories, I'd give up.

I would listen to the others about not calorie counting, I was that weight when I started three weeks ago. I eat plenty of fruit and I do my green smoothies, I enjoy a salad with all of the toppings (raw food friendly). If I have a craving for sweets I eat about a hand full of nuts with raisins or some type of dried fruit. My cravings for food has tapered down quite a bit, I do eat every two hours and that could be a smoothie, a piece of fruit, some veggies or nuts. I don't do alot of nuts though. I try not to worry much and just enjoy the break from the heavy feeling from cooked food. I've lost 20lbs. so far. You can do it. Don't sweat the small stuff.

I wouldn't be too concerned on how many calories you "Need" to safely lose the weight, eating raw calories are actually different(in my experience) from overly processed/standard cooked food etc., because the raw food we eat is bright colourful highly nutritious food, you are getting value and vitamins/minerals for every calorie you are "spending"(eating), whereas in general cooked food you can end up eating empty calories, where your not really getting your value for content.

So, I think you should drop the misconception on how many calories you must get, if your body is feeling satisfied(be careful to differentiate from the mental/emotional fullness, i often need to remind myself of this!) on 1500/less/more calories, then there is no reason to think "oh i need the 2000, may as well go eat {insert food}", you get what I'm saying? So don't try to aim for so many calories, eat lots of greens and fruits and limit/manage/moderate your fat intake for the moment if you are aiming on dropping the pounds, that said, there are people who can eat quite a bit of fat and get away with losing still, but if I were you I wouldn't try to get too much of it atm, and probably better in the form of avocados or coconuts rather than nuts preferably.

Good luck on the raw!! I hope you see the differences you want!!

TJ's has raw sunflower seeds for less than $2/lb. That is about all I trust in that section after some folks here found out their nuts are all pasteurized. I mainly use them for organic bagged apples and organic celery but i was thrilled to find the sunflower seeds. They taste very good ground with nutritional yeast and celtic sea salt over salads - like parmesan but better than I remember ever liking cheese. Also good for making cheaper treats: process the seeds (in lieu of all or some walnuts), add equal part dried fruit (ie dates and raisins) till it forms a ball, press into pan and chill. My kids especially love these when I drizzle in vanilla and add carob powder but i like them.

My advice would be to get loads and loads of greens, as well as plenty of fat via nuts, seeds, avocados.

Those 2 things should keep you satiated. Have as much fruits and other veggies as you like.

I would focus your culinary efforts towards almond pates or some burgers made with nuts plus veggies to dehydrate - and make several meals worth. Make a big batch of flax crackers too.

Then do big salad or raw soup, and add the "main course" and some of the crackers.

It will have plenty of fat and protein, so should be satisfying.
