View Full Version : What Would You Do?

So, there's a guy that works at my grocery store. He's been there many years. I usually try to avoid him because of his inappropriate comments about what people buy and the fact that he's extremely greasy and smells bad. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I have my limits.
Well, I got in the express line tonight without noticing it was his line. He began to check out my produce, stopped, coughed hard, like, spewing, paused, did it again, said, "That's better." And then checked my produce. At no time did he attempt to cover his mouth or turn his head.
Then he says, "Decided to take the moral ground, huh?" The "huh?" almost demanded a response, but I ignored him. The comment was, no doubt, in response to the fact that all that I had was produce. He stood looking at me waiting for an answer, but I kept busy sliding cards and punching numbers and refusing to look at him. Then he asks a more direct question, "You have a recipe for tonight using blood oranges?" I said, "No, just like them," and then went directly to the service counter to, for the first time in 15 years shopping there, lodge a complaint against this greasy, inappropriate man. I was thanked for expressing my concerns and the manager asked what she could do for me regarding the produce, but honestly, I didn't know what to ask for. If I got a refund, no doubt the spewed-upon would have been restocked for some other shopper.
I'd like to burn all of the produce, but it's sitting in my sink in a mild bleach solution . . .
Makes me wonder exactly what has happened to our food before we buy it.
GAH!

I would have done exactly what you did. Back when I wasn't living at home (where I have to buy food for all of my siblings and mother) I was so proud that all I had was produce in my cart.
Anyway, GROSS! I almost hope he gets fired >_>

He's been there many years, been greasy, smelly and inappropriate the whole time, so I doubt he'll get fired, but at least maybe retrained regarding personal hygiene. Euuuuwww, I wonder if he washes his hands after breaks????? GAH!!! I'm really freaked out about this. . . . .

Sounds like passive-aggressive behavior by someone who doesn't like his job. I'm sure he coughed like that on purpose.
I don't know what to say about what to do with what you bought, but eat extra vitamin C :D

He's never come across as passive-aggressive, just inappropriate.
Hopefully the bleach solution did its work.

I would probably just find another grocery store. I can't say that I've ever had anything like that happen. There is an annoying checker at one store I go to. He doesn't really do anything wrong. He just talks a lot and doesn't make a lot of sense. One day, my daughter and I were dining in a nearby restaurant when I heard him pipe up about a woman who came hobbling in on crutches. He ran over to her table, asked her how she was, what had happened to her etc. It was an operation. He then launched into the story of some person he knew that had the same operation and was giving all the details of it. Not something you want to hear when you are eating. I also learned from seeing the numerous glasses on his table that he might have a drinking problem. I just try to avoid his line when I shop in that store and really I haven't seen him in a long time. Maybe he's no longer there.

i too would find another store. because that guy is just negative energy and by your description it sounds like he needs to degrade people/be negative and hope to steal your energy so he has something to live on. and what's up with the managers caring to have an employee like this work for them and smell so bad? they negative too even behind the curtains? what else is going on there.. probably don't care.
i avoid stores after negative experiences most often.. it depends on the circumstances. instead i go to places where the energy is more uplifting and kind workers. it also draws in more kind customers.
him coughing on your food and your taking it.. look where it's left you now. you're concerned about your food ect. now you likely won't enjoy eating your food as much and draw in negative energy to it.
so look at it as a learning experience?
and next time if/when it happens... don't be concerned if they put it back on the shelf... maybe who buys it is a rude nasty person and getting a taste of their own medicine.

always avoid his line
I would do that.
Or, yeah, just shop elsewhere.
That's all you can do. It's all you need, though, really, KWIM?
Sorry for the icky experience.
*hugs*

I stopped going to my post office for anything other than package pick up because of an extremely inappropriate man. He'd look at your mail and go on rants. Once my husband had a piece of mail that had to be signed for from a political campaign office and this guy just went off on his anti-government, anti-polictical party, anti-war rant, all while my son was deployed. It was awful. Now I just go to my local friendly UPS store. I have a friend that, if she gets to the front of the line and he's the next agent, she'll let the person behind her go ahead, she won't even deal with him.
I won't stop going to this grocery, it has good produce and good selection of household goods and clothing. I knew better than to get in his line but wasn't paying attention. As soon as I saw which line I was in, I mentally kicked myself, but my stuff was already on the conveyor belt and people were in line behind me putting theirs up. This store has the U-scans where you can scan your own, which I usually do, but those lines were longer due to the time of day and I was impatient.
So, soaking produce or cleaning it, what does everyone here do for that need?

Sorry, about the rude clerk at your grocery store. That is just plain rude and gross what he did to your groceries. Maybe he dislikes veggies and of course his job.
