Wow, so nice to see a few folks from Ireland!! I used to travel to Ireland all the time for music festivals. I also lived there for a year from 2005 to 2006 playing Irish traditional music. (East Galway and West Clare) As much as I loved living in Ireland, I felt it was really tough being a vegetarian, never mind trying to be raw or vegan. Mostly due to my social circle of musicians ;) I'm pretty sure my friends didn't know or undertand what a vegan was.......Do you find it tough doing the raw food thing in Ireland? I'm totally intrigued and you have my utmost curiosity :) I did like all the veg shops and all the produce at the local SuperValu store in Portumna. Dunnes in Ennis was a joke though. Always seemed like a herd of wild elephants trampled through their produce section! hehe:)

As far as a spiralizer. From my experience there, this would have to be special ordered. Even in the States, I haven't seen a spiralizer in the shops, big and small. Do you have a small healthfood shop near you? Perhaps the shop owner could order one for you, even if you presented him/her a weblink like Alissa's store.

One thing I love about Ireland was that the people were just fantastic and so helpful when I lived there. The manager of a small SuperValu store in Portumna Galway would always tell me that she'd try to order anything I needed. If it wasn't for my wild and crazy friends, the pubs, and music scene, I probably could have done a simple raw lifestyle with the good produce in that SuperValu. It was always nice and fresh!

Hi Joyce.
Things have improved a lot since you were here (even Dunnes has improved). Farmers Markets are very popular and great for Organic foods. I get a lot of stuff from the markets and I get the rest from Tesco and Dunnes.
I get my nuts from internet sites.
You are going to have to come back and check it out.

Hi Sport,

Oh I do miss Ireland! Such a beautiful place! Are you in Cork or Kerry? I always loved road trips to both counties. I love Cork City and have ties to Cork! One of my favorite small cities of all time (I am a Rebel hurling fan..hehe...I got to see Cork beat Clare in 2005 while I was in a pub in Ennis. you can imagine I had to keep my mouth shut as my Clare friends were pretty upset by the match!).. I loved playing in music sessions at the Corner House in Cork City :D

Someday I hope to return as I have such colourful memories. Now my life is really different and a bit more civilized since I'm not a part of the music scene anymore. My liver is very thankful!! (but I still love to play my flute at home!!). I live a very quiet life on a mountian in the woods of Vermont.

Cheers!

I am in Kinsale. A small town just outside Cork City. Lots of pubs here in which to play music.
I am with you on the liver thing. I have given up alcohol as well. I was never abel to take much though (for which I was always grateful) but I did try.

It's cool that your interested, thankfully I do not find it hard to be a vegan in Ireland, I can get all my fruit and veg mainly in superq., dunnes and when I'm in town I always go into Marks and sparks - pricey but delicious mangos!! and a good selection overall. When eating cooked vegan I generally go to the local health store in the shopping centre near me, and they have a lot of good stuff but i find "Nourish" in the town to be the better one and "health matters" (also in town) too. They also d osome 80% raw cold pressed bars and larabars which I think are completely raw. So there is a really good selection. That said, I know there are a lot more vegan outlets in America, I want to move to America in the near future, England first though:).

That's really cool that the supervalu people were helpful! The supervalu near me is OK, I don't generally shop there.

None of my friends are vegan or vegetarian, they are neither unsupportive or supportive, and sometimes tell me they "won't look" if I eat something non-vegan, *yes because I am only vegan for what other people think... NOT.* lol.

Thanks for your advice about the spirulizer.

I read that you say you live in the mountains in vermont, sounds like a great place! I've heard Vermont is rated as a healthy place in America, do you agree?

Oh Kinsale is lovely! Was there so long ago!

I also love West Cork. We used to go down to Bantry for a weekend music festival. And then from there we drove to Kilchrohane where we had some friends living which is stunningly beautiful.

I actually haven't completely given up wine and locally brewed beer. I just have a little bit on the weekends. I drank far too much in Ireland. I used to stay up all night playing music. I loved my Guinness and Murphy stout! And I was just mad for the music. I couldn't get enough of tunes! I honestly don't know how I did all that plus hold down a full time accounting job in Portumna during the day! I don't think I ever slept! Ah it was fun while it lasted but now I'm in a good place with my life. :)

Hi Alva! So cool to be chatting with you. I am really missing Ireland today :)

I'm so glad you have all those options! Where in Ireland do you live? I remember a Marks and Spencer in Cork City (I think).

Yes, Vermont is a very healthy place to live. It's not as hip as the West coast of the US where there are so many raw vegan restaurants and communities. But here in Burlington the raw food scene is slowly growing. A vegan restaurant finally opened here so that's exciting! A small raw food cafe might be opening soon outside of Burlington as well here in Vermont. I know the woman trying to do this venture and it should be great (when she finally gets it off the ground!). Here in Vermont, folks are very much into outdoor sports like skiing, kayaking, hiking, etc. I think Burlington got rated the healthiest city in the US which is cool b/c it's a rather small city. The great thing about being raw here is that we have these really awesome co-ops which sell raw nuts and a lot of raw products. I still have to special order stuff but it seems the co-ops are finally getting clued into raw foods.

Best of luck with your vegan journey. I'm so pleased to hear you're doing well with it in Ireland. What I loved was the fact that there were all kinds of small health food stores sprouting up all over the place and the gyms were actually pretty busy! I did try to work out at the local gym on top of all the music playing but I didn't always make it there every week :o

oooh, gotta get going! Almost 5pm here!:D

Cheers!
Joyce

I live in the suburbs of Dublin. It's only a 20 minute journey(by train) into the city/town, so it's not too bad at all.

I would love to live in either Vermont or Burlington then! I have always wanted to live in Phoenix for some reason or Atlanta too...

Oh yum, a raw food cafe, actually there is a spa in Dun Laoghrae(spelling?) open called heaven and earth and they are suppose to have a raw living food cafe, first one in Ireland I think? But I rang up earlier and they said it's not open at the moment much to my dissapointment!:(

Yes, I am with a gym this year but, I skip a week every so often.. silly.. so trying to stay motivated, I believe the great outdoors is probably better anyway ha.

Ok, thanks for chatting, ttyl Joyce!:)
