Hi There,
I am almost 40, happily married, a mom of 3 kids age 5, 8 and 10. I am making a few dollars as a personal trainier and spinning instructor, but mostly I am hanging by a thread just taking care of family and home. I like to run- I am training for my 18th marathon right now. I also am an assistant coach in a friend's local marathon training program. My husband is also into fitness and health, and we try to do things together as much as we can.
I have been vegetarian since 1985, vegan since 1992/3- except for about a 5 year span between 2004 and now. I am starting up again, not cold turkey, though, as I have been almost all vegan for the last couple of years, with some exceptions here and there, with small doses of eggs or meat-- enough so that I called myself a "vegan for the most part." It isn't so hard for me, as I really prefer vegan, raw and unprocessed food, but now Im starting to make a more concerted effort on really avoiding animal products, refined grains, and baked goods (bread in particular.) I do like some cooked grains (like oatmeal and rice) and Im not sure Ill cut them out completely, but I don't usually eat a lot of them--they are really condiments, carriers for nuts, dried fruit, chopped veggies, etc. As an athlete, I find it hard to go against the common thought of eating grains, grains, grains as fuel.
I have been on a (raw) green smoothie "feast" since Monday (3 days ago) and hit this place as I was looking up info on fasting and detoxing. I like what I have seen! I have been feeling uncomfortable with an extra 8 pounds I have gained over about 2 years, and wanted to do something about it. Then, as a final straw, my family went to Disney world, and I struggled every day to find food- real food, preferably raw, preferably vegetables. You wouldn't believe how hard that was! So I returned feeling toxic, fat and out of sync. So here I am.
My sister has been vegan for a few years, and has been raw for most of it. She was the one who brought my attention to Alyssa Cohen's book. Her husband and two of her 4 boys are also vegans. It is very inspiring to me as a mom as I have been working on feeding my kids better for, well, their whole lives. THAT is a hard one, with so many outside influences, and being busy.
Anyway, I'm turining 40 in about 7 weeks, and I plan on being raw for the remainder of my 30s at least. Lets see what happens!
Thanks!
