I'll be staying with friends north of Manhattan in Yonkers at the end of the month. Does anyone know of good groceries with organic produce, health food stores or raw restaurants nearby? I am familiar with what NYC has to offer, but need these suggestions for uncooking at their home.

Thanks!

Oh thank you, thank you! What a relief. I am not familiar with this area at all...I'm in California...and my friends, well....hmmm, how can I be diplomatic about this? Uh, they have a very different culinary lifestyle than I and just didn't know about hfs when I asked them. But, I have to say, they are looking forward to some new dishes....muhahahaha!!!!

I grew up in Yonkers. Pizza on every corner when I was growing up.. I admit, I did love it back then, though.

Before Whole Foods arrived in White Plains, the closest thing to a HFS in the area was a GNC. Not quite our cup of raw tea.;)

While in Yonkers, Central Ave is kind of the main drag, and is one possible way to get to White Plains. I only mention this because if you do take Central Avenue to White Plains you will pass a Trader Joe's on the way while driving through Hartsdale. It doesn't have as many options as the Whole Foods does, but you can find reasonably priced raw foods like- lara bars, organic produce and nuts/seeds, frozen berries (for smoothies:D:p).

Here's their info:

Trader Joe's Hartsdale
215 N Central Ave
Hartsdale, NY 10530
Phone: (914) 997-1960
Trading Hours: 9 am - 9 pm

Have a great trip!

Wow, Elena, I really appreciate this info, as I was hoping for a TJ's as well. Thanks for taking the time to give directions and the address.

I'm visiting one of my oldest friends who is a little debilitated so I'm hoping to share some great healthy food with her.

Hi Rawlight,

Glad I could be of service.
Although I certainly rely on Whole Paycheck, um, I mean, Whole Foods:D for hard to find bulk and raw refrigerated products, I appreciate Trader Joe's for the more accessible prices on organic produce and nuts/seeds. There may be less variety, but I can still stock up on bananas, apples, oranges, and greens, etc while at TJs.

Trader Joe's is also a bit closer to Yonkers, so it might be a place where your friend could more conveniently shop for some of her produce shopping, if she wishes to include more organic produce. Of course, most large grocery stores sell organic produce, but the prices can often deter some folks initially.

Best of luck with turning your friend on to living foods. I hope she will enjoy some of the tasty live food creations you are planning on sharing with her during your visit.

ciao,

Elena
