I have been mostly raw for the past few years, but this is my second week 100% raw. I used to be fine eating a few raw cashews after lunch or in salads.

Last week I made a "mushroom alfredo sauce" with cashews and mushrooms as the base and i liked it, but i couldn't eat it again after that it made me feel so sick.

Last night I made a marinara sauce and didn't have any sundried tomatoes so I added sunflower seads to thicken it up, and ate it over zuchini and half an avocado. I was still really hungry after so I ate maybe half a cup of cashews because i really do like them. About half an hour later I was pretty dizzy and neaseus and had to lay down. I didn't eat any fruit beforehand, there was 1 small date in the whole marinara recipe.

I don't know what it is, i like them but after eating nut sauce for dinner i feel really sick all the way up til bedtime.

I can relate!

I have found that I just cannot eat big quantities of nuts, whether they are soaked, etc. or not. If I eat too many, I just feel ick...listen to your body.

Are you soaking your nuts and seeds? I noticed I feel ok eating a nut heavy dish as long as I soaked the nuts. If I don't I feel sick.

Are you sure its the nuts? I get nauseas from eating the raw zuchini.

hmm... I was not sick until i had cashews after eating zuchini...

I made an almond garlic dressing last week and the salad it went on had some zuchini in it too, but i was sure it was the dressing that made me feel sick.

Most recipes call for nuts or I can't make sauce or dressing. :( I soaked the almonds the cashews no, into the vitamix.

Gradually after a while on raw I've switched over from using nuts primarily to using seeds. Seeds seem much more digestable to me. Seeds are cheaper, too, which is helpful.
You can substitute seeds for any recipe that calls for nuts. I like hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds. Poppy seeds, flax seeds and milk thistle seeds are nice, but in smaller amounts, not as staples, because they are more medicinal. I always try to soak my seeds but occassionally I eat them unsoaked.

I have only tried sunflower seeds, i've never eaten any seeds on their own before. Do they have any taste?

I used to be able to eat raw cashews, but now I can no longer tolerate them. I believe we go through cycles with certain, if not all foods on this journey. And it could be the reverse...a food that you couldn't stand or digest pre-raw becomes one of your favorites! Listen to your body and trust your inner voice. If it feels like it was the cashews that caused the digestive disruption, more than likely it was the cashews. When it happens to me with any food, I eliminate it for awhile. There are so many foods, so many choices. Enjoy!

Taste them and see how you like them. I'm partial to hemp, sunflower, pumpkin and flaxseeds. But I know some do not like them or have their own preferences.

Feel better!

Maybe you got a bad bunch of cashews.

I don't think they were bad, they taste the same to me as they always have. The organic store only sells them in one cup portions. lol

If you had no problem before with cashew, your cashews might have mold. Also, are they fresh? Raw? Many cashews aren't raw even though they say so.

You can use macadamian nuts to substitute for cashew. I found it to work great.

I've tried having raw zuchini in the zuchini hummus recipe in the past, and I got really sick from the raw zuchini. I felt nauseous, bloated and had a really disgusting taste in my mouth. Also, I can't have sunflower seed pates because they also make me vomit-sickly. I can only eat a small portion of walnuts and absolutely no raw chickpeas b/c they also make me nauseous and sickly. It's great that you are hearing your bodies response to these foods.

after a while you become more sensitive to things.

when i first went raw i ate all kinds of things in quantities i would never want to eat now. it's like a journey.

i think some of us are just sensitive to cashews. ive had the same reaction from the "crap" broken bulk "raw" cashews from the hfs AND to the ones from Sunfood, which are said to be really raw, hand cracked, and organic. i can get away with using them in small amounts for a sauce now and again, though they dont make me feel great, sometimes i will use them anyway on occasion, but im not investing in another 14 dollar bag or whatever from sunfood. Also, the ones from sunfood come vacuum packed so im pretty sure they are not moldy. I think i have read that cashews are actually not technically a nut, and i thought that i read that the tree they come from is somehow related to poison ivy (not sure on this though), so its not that unusual that our bodies might not love them.

I had spaghetti marinara again last night with the zuchini and sunflower seeds and was fine, just too many cashews and i feel ill. The cashews are date stamped when they are packed, and like i said they taste the same so I don't think it's their fault lol

maybe... i had 4 last night and i was ok. Maybe i can't use cashews for sauce or dressings because it's too much?

I don't eat nuts in big amounts either. In fact, I don't like them as much as I did at the beginning of my raw journey. Hope you are doing well. Eva xoxo

+1 When I first started working at a raw food restaurant-I wanted to try everything and had lots of little portions here and there. And, my stomache never hurt, then I started to feel very sensitive to nama shoyu and to heavy cakes, and so I stuck to greens, tomatoes, avocado and ocasionally some coconut at the restaurant and I felt much better. Now, I have to make sure I don't combine salty and sweet foods or to combine nuts and avocados or tomatoes and other fruits because I am more sensitive and get stomach aches.

I am glad I found this thread! I was searching online because the other day I made some delicious cashew hummus and could not stop eating it and then soon afterwards I felt so awful! Intense nausea and dizziness but I had just a few weeks prior eaten cashew green tea ice cream or cashew "cream" sauce or fermented cashew cheese and been fine. I did soak the cashews but not very long, so I am going to proceed with caution. I will make sure I soak them long enough and not eat so much! I would probably stop eating them but I have probably a pound left and those suckers are not cheap!

I'm curious if soaking the cashews will help, let me know. I had a small handful of good quality cashews on my salad last night and I'm very grateful they digested well, they sure rounded out the salad nicely.

cashews are usually ridden with fungus. Gabriel Cousens recommends to stay away from cashews because of this. Also peanuts. Peanuts and cashews are in the same boat.

SO this is why I get a lot of fermentation in my gut from cashews.

I get this too with cashews. I've heard the majority come out of India and are sprayed with a pesticide or something like that. But there is a definite ill feeling that I get with eating cashews.

Another nut digestion issue I have is with nuts and fruit. I just feel really bad if I have the two in the same meal. Avocados less so but still to some degree. My thinking is that they're so different, fruits and fats that you digest them differently so you can really only digest one at a time.

They're also really easy to overeat which will of course could cause nausea.

Hope some of this was useful.

So, can you make hemp seed-based dressings with soaked hemp seeds? And if you've done this, are there any special tips you have? Do I soak them for a while, rinse and plop them in the blender with other ingredients just like sunflower seeds? I'm so excited to try this! I have tons of hemp seeds in my freezer and I'm getting sick of sunflower-based dressings!
