Hey everyone. I'm having trouble sourcing cheaper nuts in the UK. Luckily I'm situated near some health food shops and also a green grocers so I can get very cheap vegetables. But from what I've been reading it's still cheaper in the US (Going b the exchange rate) for example it's £1.77, about $2.50 for 125g of raw almonds here. I think that's about a cup? We don't work in cups, but some shops do sell cup measuring devices for cooking. So it would cost me $2.50 to make one batch of almond milk, and I tend to go through about 5 times that amount a week of soya milk. It costs me about $1 for the same amount of soya milk from the shops. So trying to be frugal about that is difficult! If anyone is from the UK and can offer some advice I would much appreciate it!

The "Health food craze" let's call it, has taken the UK by storm, but it also means that those foods are more expensive here than regular foods where ever I have found them. Being a University student, it's hard to afford these things. I have a blender for smoothies but nothing else. I need to find a food processor somewhere, but cannot really afford a dehydrator.

I agree that nuts are dear but I try to keep my nut use to a minimum regardless of the price. As has been already said, seeds are cheaper but also better for you.
I get a meal out of the large papayas that Tesco carry. They are very filling.
Sprouting your own seeds yields a lot of nutrition at little cost.
You seem to feel that you need to make a lot of nut milk but have not said why.

You're right! I think it's the mind-set that my soy milk has a lot of calcium, and I'm thinking of ways of getting calcium, so I'm making nut milks with almond and sesame. Hmm. Maybe it's because I'm a complete and utter cereal nut. I considered having the almond pulp as a kind of cold porridge... I might do that tomorrow.

Here is a list of raw resorces in the UK. They may or may not sell nuts but they should be able to point you in the right direction!

www.planetorganic.com (London based shop, several branches, I used to work there!)

www.detoxyourworld.com (if Shazzie does not sell them she may be able to tell you where)

www.rawliving.co.uk (If Kate & Chris do not know where to buy they may be able to tell you, I know she is based in Brighton)

http://www.therawfoodcoach.com/ (Again if Karen does not know where to buy she may be able to tell you)

http://www.fresh-network.com/ (another great UK resorce, also produces THE best raw magazine, I dont know if they sell sell nuts but they are the holy grail of info in the UK, so ask them too)

If and when you do find a good source for your nuts please post it here to help others.:)

Cheers,

EPPP
