Are the shells of sunflower seeds edible? Can they be digested? I'm eating them raw of course. It is difficult even to chew them.

And of course there is the thing about them causing appendicitis. I searched a little on the web and a doctor said that there is a very low risk of getting appendicitis from seeds. I'd be interested in some opinions here though.

I used to eat them when I was a kid. Can't say anything bad ever happened except the woody bits catching in your throat a little if you don't chew them a lot.

I eat sunflower seeds with the shell but I don't eat the shell. I crack 'em in my teeth, eat the inside part, and spit out the shell, like a bird.

i wouldn't eat the shell. i'd spit it out. there are things our bodies just can't digest and i would think that would be one of them. i would eat the shells of walnuts etc either.
