Hi everyone-

Just checking in to see if anyone buys nuts online; I'd like to purchase a variety. I trying search above but didn't find anything. I'm so disappointed with what's in the grocery stores in my area. I've come across moldy raw nuts so many times; they don't change out the canisters often enough. A relative shipped some nuts to us around November but for some reason they didn't have the best pecan crop this time around. The constant bad experiences at the grocery store have me interested in trying an online shipment - hopefully my budget can handle it. I've seen some places online but wanted to see if anyone had personal recommendations.

I use www.bulkfoods.com I know this wouldn't cut it for some people because of questionably raw stuff, however they are inexpensive and cheap shipping if you order $75, and I've always gotten stuff quickly and in good shape. I'm sure you will get lots of feedback.

Blessings,
Heather

lavendarJ,

At the recommendation of a number of people on various raw forums, I placed my first order last week with nutsonline.com I am very happy with my order. Each item I ordered was in its own sealable bag. Some of the items I ordered were organic dried fruit for variety in the winter for smoothies. I also ordered sesame seeds for making tahini, chia seeds for chia pudding and organic raw shelled pistachios, all of which smelled really fresh when I opened the bags and there was no hint of any rancid or stale odors. I ordered organic sunflower seeds, but I have not opened them yet.

I agree with you about stores not changing out the canisters often enough. A couple of weeks ago, I bought some pumpkin seeds in a bulk bin, that weren't as fresh as they could be. The following week I wanted to buy more, and I ask the person working in the department if I could get a couple of pounds from the box that they keep in the cooler. They happily did this for me.

Back to nutsonline though, I placed my order early in the day, and a few hours later, I received an email that my order was shipped and I received my order the next day. Of course they are in New Jersey and I am in Massachusetts so your shipping time could be longer. I ordered about 8 items and my shipping cost was $8.00.

Have a Rawkin' Day!

Blessings and peace,

Marcia

jaffe bros use to have some good deals, but i know the prices got raised over the past year. but that company and nutsonline isnt all raw so u need to ask first. most of bulkfoods isnt raw thats why its so cheap. i get almonds and cashews from dimondhealth.com because they're raw and organic.

Tree of Life is a good company to buy truly raw nuts, dried fruit, and raw living oils from. Do a Google for them :)

that actually doesnt mean anything. many things say raw that doesnt mean they are. u still gotta ask the questions. those peanuts are definitely not true raw peanuts as the only way to get those is imported and they're way more expensive.

We were just discussing this on another raw site....here is a cut and paste of what I had written...

Ok anyone have CHEAP really raw nut links to share. I'm so annoyed coz I've literally been on the phone with Oh!Nuts for over 30 minutes trying to find out WHERE their advertised RAW nuts are from. No one can answer me and have been transferring me back and forth. They make a point to note that the almonds are pasteurized but the other nuts have nothing noted. So the girl gave me big attitude telling me the ONLY way to get raw nuts is for them to be in the shell. So I had to inform her that MOST nuts from other countries ARE RAW. She kept tryin to make her point. She was so annoying honestly BUT I repeated that nuts from other countries are most likely NOT pasteurized and all I am looking for from her is WHERE their nuts are from. Again she was clueless. Truth be told, the only raw nuts are in the shells because MOST commercial types of shell removal does incorporate a heating process but still... is there no truth in advertising anymore?!!

Earlier in the day, I also spoke to a lovely young lady from JustAlmonds but as we all know any almonds from the states especially California ARE pasteurized uuggghh!! She is saying that her family's almonds are flash steamed for short burst and then immediately vacuumed off. I asked the temp but she said [I]"Not that hot and its done for a burst only". I said "Well steam is a byproduct of boiling water and it takes 200+ degrees to boil water no"?? So now she is kinda taken aback LOL. According to her, the flash steamed almonds WILL still SPROUT Hmmmm. I had posted on another thread about the PPO pasteurizing but now after her saying these steamed ones will still sprout has peaked my curiosity. She is sending me some more info with temps and sprouting abilities so once I hear I will let you all know....BECAUSE their nuts are less than $5lb!!! HelloO thats unbelievable for raw nuts. But again I need to see the info.

She sent the info already WOW nice lady!!....it's an adobe E so can't cut and paste but will give the gist..."Surfaces of the nut may reach up to 160 degrees with the inside of the nut not heated nearly as much. In fact, preliminary studies funded by ABC reportedly show no significant degradation of the almond's essential nutrients. Moreover, the steam pasteurized nuts were sprouted thus stoking the ongoing debate as to whether pasteurized nuts are "raw"

Now the Oh!Nuts chick just contacted me. She said she contacted the company/s they get their supplies from and their Brazil nuts are from Brazil--imagine!!! The cashews are from Brazil and Peru. [Sadly] The walnuts and almonds are from California. But as far as I know, only almonds are mandatorily pasteurized right?? Uggggh so much research into whats raw and whats not---driving me bonkers LOL I must admit Oh!nuts has some GREAT prices and you can buy by the pound no minimum necessary.

I think I'm gonna try justalmonds' steam pasteurized nuts altho it's a 5lb min...for 5 lb. box of Mission (27-34 size) Almonds is $19.11 [or $3.82lb that's an awesome price!!] I just noticed this on the site-->Steam (H2O) and Propylene Oxide (PPO) treatments only affect the outside surface of the almond. Unlike juice, milk, eggs and canned foods, almonds can achieve equal safety protection against harmful bacteria without affecting the inner core.
IDK but I'm gonna try to sprout some when I do make an order...I will post my findings.

[B]mblessed wish I would have read your suggestion about the place in NJ before I ordered from Oh!Nuts LOL I probably could have cruised over there and actually LOOKED at their inventory. Oh!Nuts charged me $8 s/h and they are only over in NYC but it's way cheaper than me driving there and paying all the tolls.

hmmm....i guess you cant be 100% sure either way. walmart (OMG) has raw peanuts in the shell for 1.78 for a pound. the bag says raw, but who knows. they are grown in NM. they are a PIA to shell and that paper-like lining is annoying to remove.. takes a few mins per peanut...
i am trying to be 100% but truthfully i cant go broke doing it. i wont spend $5 a pound for peanuts--and even those you aren't 100% sure are officially raw i suppose. if i am at 98 or 95% and a LITTLE bit of NOT-raw sneaks into my diet that i am either unaware of, mistaken about, or cant avoid, then so be it. we all surely try our best but there is a limit for me. : /
finding sources for raw (for me) canot be an all-comsuming task. it ought not to be and i agree "truth in advertising" is aparntly a myth.

Unfortunately, there is a misconception that all almonds in the US are pasteurized. There is an exemption to the Almond Board Rule that allows farmers to sell up to 100 lbs per day of unpasteurized almonds to a customer.

Also, I have heard (from companies that participate in the pasteurization) that the ones that are steam pasteurized still sprout. I haven't bought these personally as I think it would still do some damage to the exterior. Also, I would stay away from the PPO (non-organic) ones, as that is a chemical I don't think is intended for human consumption.

Please let us know how the sprouting goes....pictures would be nice, if you can.

Actually I am originally from CA and I had even asked a couple of growers if they had the non-pasteurized available for sell...but I live in NJ so they said for it to cross state line it really can become an issue  but I didn't argue I mean whats the point right?!

I ordered several pounds of other RAW nuts so may be awhile til I do the JustAlmonds order as there is a 5lb minimum with them...but you can bet I will def let you all know if when I do and my sprouting outcome. I will take pics too hee hee

Have a fab weekend my raw peepz!! :D

Raw peanuts are not very good for you - they are green in color and look like peas.

You might want to study how they grow and what they look like when the first come off the tree.

Buying stuff just because it says "raw" is silly in my opinion. Humans over several centuries have adapted to eat cooked food - that is why eating cooked beans is okay but eating raw soaked beans will cause your house to sound like a farting fest. Try some green peanuts - and shut your windows so you do not bother the neighbors.

Also, do you eat your potatoes raw too? Yummy - not.

I think some things were just plain not meant to be eaten. Raw potatoes and peanuts will give you a stomachache, and that's how our ancestors learned not to eat those things.

If it still sprouts, the enzymes haven't been destroyed. Meaning it should still be ok.
