I just phoned a really nice HFS in my area and asked if they carried any raw crackers, etc. The woman on the other end of the line had NO idea what "raw food" was.....I'm very surprised, I must say....but I am in Maine.

I didn't expect the store to have raw crackers, but I expect them to know what raw is.

Why would you expect that.

The standard of "HEALTH" in America is not centered around proper nutrition. Sales associates in a grocery store aren't necessarily required to knowledgeable, just friendly!

Hi lifeAgift,
Well, I wouldn't expect any kind of knowledge base from the folks at a chain grocery, but I DID from the people who are employed at a very well-stocked, whole-foods, vegan-supportive, alternative health-oriented HEALTH FOOD STORE! I don't expect to find raw food consultants, just knowledge of what the term means.

I guess raw foods haven't hit the "Maine"-stream here yet..

Just because it's a "health food store" doesn't mean they are into "health". For real. It IS a big money making business.

But hey! Think of it. You've turned them on to something awesome. So you go!!!! Good job!

The more they hear about it the more items they will stock.Rawfood is getting more mainstream as people get sicker and sicker.Mostly purchased raw stuff premade is super duper priced too compared to making it at home. I bought that stuff at first but soon learned to be more economical and make it myself...yay!

LOL my cashier at Whole Foods yesterday was the unhealthiest looking person I've seen in a Whole Foods in a while. I wanted to embrace her and hook her up with RAW. She was grossly overweight and tired! Bless her heart working at a supposed health food grocery store.

Good for you! I look so forward to having my own dehydrator. Getting the pricey stuff online or in-store is not ideal, for sure...I'm trying to balance how expensive it is with how much I feel I *need* these particular foods right now as I go back into raw...

There is actually another very nice health food store 2 blocks from me here in town. They are very knowledgeable about raw foods, and they carry things like raw cacao powder and hemp seeds, and dulce, but no crackers...:( I think to a certain extent, the issue is where I am in the country. People in Cali don't have this problem! And it must be expensive to get things like packaged dehydrated crackers in, especially when raw is not very *big* in these parts. It's all about the lobstah. (wishes for lobster icon).

Aw...that's touching, and I can totally relate! I've worked in maybe 5 indy health food stores over the past 20 years, and I so remember how sickly I was when I got my first job in one! I "wanted what they had" and I did learn so much. Didn't you want to hug her?

Feeling a little mean about my crankiness after hearing this. Maybe I'm just irked b/c I'm surrounded by snow and provincialism, and I want to be somewhere progressive and warm, where fruits, veggies, greens, and raw food restaurants are all around me.

It's warm here in Houston today - wearing shorts and a tee shirt. Getting ready to walk the dog. Probably close to 80 and kinda muggy. I don't know how ya'll other folks live with the cold weather and snow.

I actually like snow, we haven't had much this winter and I'm a bit disappointed. There is a chance for March snow so we'll see. Humidity is what I hate so I dread summer a bit. Spring is nice though.

I'm with you on that! I'm in CA and it's already warming up. I find it fascinating that we can be in 70-80 degree weather when people just on the other side of the country are still buried in snow!

I do find it weird that a HFS didn't know about raw! Even the one by my parents' house had a few raw items, they specialized more in gluten free than anything else

You'd be surprised as to how many HFS's don't know anything about raw foods.
