ARGH! I don't like reading disturbing articles. So much more the reason to grow everything yourself, or hook up with reliable farmers...

Organic producers such as Earthbound Farm are not allowed to use irradiation under the National Organics Program standards.
Earthbound Farm, which packaged the spinach responsible for the 2006 E. coli outbreak, has since put in place the industry’s most aggressive testing and safety program. Included is a process of triple-washing foods with a chlorine rinse and pathogen-testing at every step of production.
Oh goody, that's lots better. </sarcasm>

Wondered about Earthbound Farms as I do buy their stuff sometimes.
I looked at their site. Here are the exact words when it comes to the washing part.....
"The greens are thoroughly washed and sanitized in chilled, chlorinated water meeting National Organic Program standards before they’re packaged."
who knew. How can they say organic on them.Boy!

Ugh! I can't wait to grow my own this season...
As for the chlorinated water, I find myself wondering how different that is from my washing of fruits and veggies. Our water here is so chlorinated, that it smells like bleach as it comes out of the tap. I do use Brita pitchers to filter my drinking water, but I guess I should be using the drinking water to wash my food too, shouldn't I?

okay this DOES disturb me. so is all packaged lettuce/spinach/etc. rinsed in chlorine???? (even if it's organic)
what about baby carrots?
or is this just conventional produce and franken produce?

There are petitions going around that need to be signed about this kind of thing. I think it is dangerous to just not read about it because it is too depressing. You may think you are safe growing your own, but not everyone has the time to grow their own gardens. Plus what if something happens to the seeds one day (with irradiation or whatever). I heard something on the radio recently that applies here I think. It is longer than what I am putting below, but you will get the gist- it is a commentary on dissent.
When they began to lock up the Catholics, I said, it doesn't matter because I am not Catholic.
When they began to lock up the trade unionists, I said, it doesn't matter because I am not a trade unionist.
When they came for me, there was no one left to care.

Tap water is chlorinated.I never wash my produce with it.I have a filter.
Yes they wash the veggies with lightly chlorinated water. It is their packaged foods and yes baby carrots. All Earthbound Farms products that are ready made items.
