I was at my friend's house today and his mother (his parent's are divorced) came by and saw us playing Halo3 on the xBox and decided to be cool and make us some dinner. She asked me if I was lactose intolerant when she came in and I told her I was a vegan (didn't want to throw raw just yet). She asked what that was and I told her a vegetarian without animal products. The meal was a nice salad with avocado and some delicious looking pasta with spinach and cheese inside of it.
Well, I ate all of the salad (it rocked) but sort of moved the pasta around to make it look like I ate. My friend knows about my eating habits and was laughing at me when I told him I didn't want to go out there with the plate because I didn't want to be rude about it all, so he made a bet with me and told me if I could kill him once in Halo he would do it for me.
3 matches, and 50 deaths later I finally kill him and he takes it out there feigning it as his own. I tell her good bye and thank her for the delicious meal and leave. When I was walking out of the house I hear, "I wonder why he didn't like it, was it the Spinach?"
Damn I felt so bad ):
I wanted to rush in there and try to explain to her that I don't eat cooked food but it was pretty much all over anyways.
I hope I didn't piss her off =|

Ah, yes, those situations...safest bet is "I already ate". Some well-meaning people will never understand. Or if in a restaurant..."I'm allergic to eggs and dairy". THEN they won't put that stuff in there.

Bleeding heart + raw food lifestyle = does not go together
I should know I am a bleeding heart. :p
I find it helps just to be truthful. "I don't eat cooked food". Period.
Then they don't take it personally and just think
YOU'RE WEIRD!!!!
LOL.
Much peace and hope the confusion is cleared up.

I just tell people that I have a lot of food allergies and people seem to respect this with out question.. And it's true, as I cooked food makes me feel bad so I'm "allergic" to it.

this reminds me of rosaceans. i have rosacea and frequented many forums and many are insecure and won't tell people they have a disease when it's obvious something is going on because of how it affects people on the face ect. it makes no sence to me. the insecurity about having rosacea i can understand, but afraid to tell people and the allergies they have ect... i don't understand why some/most rosaceans have a problem to tell.
so... if people are afraid to tell others they are raw... why? is it about insecurity? are you raw for the right reasons? to me being raw is that you care about your health and care to be the best and most vibrant you can be... and perhaps also care not to kill animals and care about the enviroment ect too.
so what's wrong with that?
sure.. many people may not understand the benefits of raw vegan... the goverment, doctors, bio-techs, food companies, farms ect all want your money!!!!!!! of course they support posion. and most humans are too gulliable and put their faith into the viscious liers. they're deseaved.
more people need to be educated on the benefits of raw. not to be slammed by it, but if some care to listen or ask for info. and if people don't understand or think we're crazy... everyone is entitles to their own beliefs... but doesn't mean i have to be affected by theirs.
same thing with rosacea... most don't talk about it and very likely is the reason very little money is given for research!! many celebs have it and only a couple announce and talk about it.
i just say be proud of who you are and who cares what people think.

The Truth is always best. Would you have eaten Food that you were allergic to?

Aw, you are very sweet to feel so bad.
I'm sure if you had explained what had happened, she probably would have been understanding. Especially if she was trying to be cool... ;)
But don't worry too much, you'll get to feel more comfortable letting people know about your food preferences.

Honesty seems easier. You don't even have to give all the info if you don't want. "That salad sounds just right. I would love that. Thanks."

I tend to assume that people are adults and can handle the truth rather than assume they are like children and I need to ~ handle/be in charge of ~ their emotions. Personally, I'd rather people tell me the truth because then I don't have to guess at what they like/dislike; want/don't want, etc.
It's really tough to handle my own emotions and others' emotions as well. So, I take care of my emotions and allow others the right to handle theirs.

Well said Revvell. That is going to be my new Mantra! " I take care of my own emotions and allow others the right to handle theirs" Bravo!

I really don't care what other people think. Most of them don't care what shape their body is in health-wise, why should I think they could possibly care about mine? Do what's right for you, not what you think others will think is right.

I am doing alot better at that.I bring my own food and people know now thats what I do.People expect this.Or I might be fasting that day.Or I eat before I go and can then "pick" at any little raw item and be satisfied.
I decided that I take care of myself. And what ,inside of me,feels the need to be embarrassed, held back, nervous, secretive,or any of the feelings that might be present?
So I avoid those situations if possible or do as I said above.
she sounds like a sweet lady and was genuinely wondering why her kid didn't like what she made. :) waste of food and woman energy you know. she could just skip the ingredient next time.
