I'm so proud of all of you, you are all doing such a wonderful job and at the same time being extremely inspiring. I'm going to do a juice fast as soon as my mum goes home in a week or so, (she wouldn't understand;) )

Does anyone have any information on Breastfeeding and fasting, i'm sure that if it was only for 7 days or so it wouldn't effect my milk supply.

Your all just so lovely for sharing (((HUGS)))

As an LLL Leader I just wanted to comment on fasting while breastfeeding, which is not generally recommended. Depending, however, on how old your child is you could consider a few factors:

--if your child is a baby (under one year) and bm makes up his/her primary source of calories, it's not recommended to fast because fewer calories can lower your supply of milk
--that said, if your child is over one and bm does NOT make up the primary source of nutrition then you might consider it IF you are careful to consume the same number of calories per day
--you might also consider supplementing with B-12 and flax seed oil during your juice fast
--keep in mind that toxins are released into your bloodstream during a fast, and they will go into your breastmilk.

Just some things to think about.

My girls are 2 and 3 so they get most of their nutrients from food these days, but i have been conserned about the release of toxins, i was of the thuoght that they would first leave through the bodys natural filtering and release ways like urine and fecaes so would that much really go through the breast milk?? I don't really want to risk making my girls sick, so it looks like another few years before a juice fast for me...lol

I am actually still nursing my 3 year old, but there is NO MILK in there. She just won't stop - must still need it! I felt ok going ahead and doing the fast, but I've waited a long time. ;)

Good morning everyone, how is everyone doing this great day #3?
I am doing quite well, had my oj this morning and am going to start juicing vegetables to. My orange case order with Whole Foods may not be into Tuesday so will use what oranges I have and start on stuff like carrot, cuke and hmm some of you are using hot peppers? lol may have to try this. :D
And of course all the green veggies for Alissa's favorite drink.
Have a great day folks, we are winning!

LOL...Sweetlips got her JUICE on!

Glad to see we are all doing so well and have made it to day 3..YAAAAY!

I feel really good this morning. Like Curtis, had my oj (with juice of half a lemon added) and I'm good to go for a little while. Had another one of those nights...felt the detox going on in my body but I meditated and prayed and had a wonderful nights sleep so much to the point that I woke up at 4:30 and wasn't even sleepy, tired or anything. But yall know this may mean a nap later on :p

But we'll see...might not even need the nap today.

Hey, I have a beet here and I'm not a big fan of them like a lot of folks are...anyone have a nice juice recipe that I can make using beet? Remember, I'm not one who loves the taste of beets, so make sure it's a good one please!

Good morning! Day 3 yeah!!
Im thinking of moving this thread to the juicing section. That way people who are not doing it can still use this discussion forum and we are not hogging it all day by posting about our fasting. I think we will continue this in a few threads by the time we are done.
Sooo. Ill move this later to the juicing, sprouting section so look for it there.
Things are good! Lots of work today so i should be busy not thinking about food. Its only 7:30 here but already worked out and really not even hungry today. I think ill make an OJ soon and then a watermelon.
So proud of you all!

Excellent combo Curtis. Carrot is universally known as a wonderful juice and the high-water content of cukes make them good for almost any combo.

Hiya Sister Rawkinlocs,

I am not a big fan of beets either. They seem to make my juice taste like dirt! I haven't given up on them though. I think I just have to put much less beet in the juice and more carrots/apples/cukes/tomatos. Of course I put a little sea salt in mine for taste (also cleans me out better), but thats just me.

I actually LIKE beets in my juice. I usually juice 2 lbs. of carrots, one apple, one beet, celery and some greens. That gives me enough for one day.

Thanks Todd and Edda!

LOL@ beets making your juice taste like dirt! I think when I make both my sweet and regular veggie juices today I'll add a little slither of beet each time and see how it goes.

Edda, wow a WHOLE beet...you must really love your beets!

Well good morning you all! You are all doing great! Well i blew it last night! I read that people were craving salt as i was and my husband is sitting there eating an un-raw food yet of tortillas and i caved!! I didn't have that many as they made me feel ill after about 8. But then i decided to go ahead and have a salad out of stress. We are selling our house, my sister won't talk to me, my husband and i aren't connecting on this and he thinks i spend too much time on here and i just lost the will--feeling too much going on and using the food as a way to handle it. But i am going to try again today as that was around 8pm last night and i really want to do this. If i crave salt again though and i only have an orange juicer any suggestions?? Its funny--i feel like i let my team down!! But i will hang in there as today is a new day. Keep up the great work!

Todd,

I had to lol because that is what I have always said about beet juice - it taste like dirt or for those who have delicate ears - it taste like soil! I do happen to like it, but since it is a strong cleanser and can turn urine red as well, I recommend 1/4 of the beet when you juice it. Trust me when I say this, it will clean you out! if you do a whole beet! and RAWKINLOCCS, you might need a nap after that.

Back to being SUPERGIRL, I had a couple diversions - one was a two hour nap after consuming 1/2 gallon of water and the other was a 1 hour nap. I am awake now and I have to do a clean sweep by 6:00p.m. (that's before hubby gets back home - he loves me :p )

Hiya Sister Rawkinlocs,

They seem to make my juice taste like dirt!

:( Hi guys- I fell as well. I feel terrible about it, although 2 full days for my first fast isn't too bad I guess, but I was hoping to do at least 5. I have family coming in tomorrow and I'm working in my house to clean up- it was to the point where I couldn't concentrate on my kids and the house. I KNOW I can do this fast because I was feeling so well the first 2 days... Besides that, CostCo ran out of the Jack Lananne juicer I was going to get with my bonus, and I broke down and just cried because I was so looking forward to adding more than just citrus to the fast. Anyway, this is no place for excuses.... you guys are awesome and I wish you tons of luck during the fast! I will try to start a new one mid November once I have everything I need and things are less hectic-

Good luck, and I will still be praying for all of you... ;)

Maaan, I feel like folding like a card table right about now...but I'm determined to make it over my usual 3-day hump. When I attempted the 30-day raw challenge, I'd fold after 2 or 2 1/2 days...when I attempted the Master Cleanse, same thing; and the same with a juice fast attempt in the past.

I think those who have broken your fast earlier than anticipated did WONDERFUL and reading about you falling off makes me want to fall off even more! But I digress, I must carry on past today even if that means breaking the fast tomorrow. I WANT to go at least til Friday, though...I'd like to do a minimum of 5 days and a maximum of 7 days (or longer if it just happens to go down like that).

But we'll see. I'm going now to make some veggie juice and hope that my desires to eat will diminish!
========
UPDATE: Okay, I'm sitting here sipping on some carrot/tomato/cilantro/parsley/kale/spinach/bokchoy/apple juice with just a touch of sea salt and feeling better. I think I was just hungry and my kids were eating their lunch and I read of others breaking their fast and it all just began to flood me with desires to EAT something. But I'm good now...FOR now! ;)

Great job all of you! For lunch today I had cuke, carrot, celery, apple.
What can I say had the apples in the frig and just got the cuke, carrots and celery. :)
For me this juice was okay. Did quite well in the morning, had oj for mid morning break and feeling good.
Will check back in tonight have a great day everyone!

Okay, it's almost 4:00 and I couldn't take it anymore. I was okay after the veggie juice, but about an hour later, I was getting "that" feeling again. So, I thought to myself that if I have a smoothie, I'd still be DRINKING and not EATING...I know Alissa said "no" to smoothies and I don't know how much this will count against me for this fast, but I did it. Don't know if it's gonna take me on forward in this fast or if it 's gonna sabotage me and cause me to want more to eat, but again, it's done. So, I just finished off a smoothie consisting of banana, apple, grapes, pear, strawberry and water.

*Sigh* So what's the damage? Did I break my fast with that smoothie?

I just want to say WOW you guys are great! I don't think I could manage to do it for even a few hours! So, even though some of you only made it a day or two or three... it's still super in my opinion!

Thanks Magnolia,

Well, it's official...I've broken my fast. Perhaps I'll pick it up again on Monday when Todd and others join in. I guess maybe the smoothie DID sabotage me 'cause next thing I knew, I was eating grapes and then snacking on my bell pepper crackers.

But these last couple of days and today to this point was awesome! Thanks for all the support everyone!! :D

Do I feel bad, nope, do I want to fast, yup - I just need less stuff going on.

I am admiring the rest of you who are still hanging. DH will still buy the veggies and fruits because I whinned to him  when I ate. Besides, I was incredibly hungry and .... no excuses - will see you guys on Monday.

Alissa, how are you doing?

Hi all just got on line to read your post.
First of all, congrats to those that are on still. For those of you that fell, or cheated, or whatever words you want to use, itÂ’s really not about being perfect. You all did so great! Hey, you gave your digestive system a rest for a day or two and now your still eating raw (hopefully mostly raw  )
But this isnÂ’t about whether you are perfect or not. Many of you are just starting this journey... its taken me many many years to get this to where i am not 'white knuckling' it any more and feel that i am not going to 'fall off' at the slightest smell of food! Look at me the other day, crying to you all that i was hungry!
Anyway, you all did so great! 1 -2 -3 days, any amount of time is great. The next time it will be longer. The important thing is to not let it go so far that you are struggling and depriving yourself so much that you fall hard and go and pig out.
So, you felt you needed to eat. Big deal. Its just food ;)
Just stay on track with raw, make some fun things and pat yourself on the back for having the courage to try and make it public! ThatÂ’s not easy. No biggie, donÂ’t be hard on yourself. The first two days are the hardest and you guys did it!
sweet lips, im doing good, i am having a bit of a time with the cold rainy wheather we are having and been super busy on the phone and computer and i feel like im babbling from all the energy so its kind of weird talking o people right now but all is good!
i donÂ’t know how long ill go, just taking it day by day.

Okay, I'm back in as of tomorrow morning or should I say tonight!

Pig out is exactly what I did! And now needless to say, I'm feeling it. Not only that, but everything that I ate left an awful, bitter taste in my mouth...what's THAT all about.

I'll start up again on 11/01 (maybe)

Hi juicers!
Just read about this whole thing!I haven't got much time to be on the forum these days!
I just had a question.......How much juice do you drink at a time?
Just wondered......I don't know exactly how much you may drink at once so that it's good for the body.
I also admire you all!
I couldn't do it'Although I would like to do it for 2 or 3 days.

;) Thanks Alissa, one day at a time is the best way. I am committed to 100% raw until I begin next week. For me raw is like fasting, cause I have been dancing around being 100% raw.

Elke, you can do it! You asked how much juice do I drink at a time - 64oz today, usually about 24-32 oz of juice followed by 16oz of water.

Rawkinlocs - got you on my mind. I know about the pigging out - I once ended the master cleanse - started the fast for the wrong reason and ended for the wrong reason - ended up at a trough (that's what I call all-you -can eat buffets), and consumed a considerable amount of food, and was physically ill for several days, brought back the bronchitis and the evil twin showed up - whew I am tired from just writing that and the memory.

For the rest of you - Blessing. Remember the suggestions and advice that Alissa gave and you will do well. :)

Grats to everyone who did this! Alissa is right this is a learning experience.
Even though this is my first time doing this I really haven't had to hard a time with it, lol maybe because I came back from vacation to a empty frig.:)

Ahh, Rawkinlocs, i wish i could have posted earlier--i wanted you to hang in there!! I am sitting here laughing as i felt so bad and here i may not have been the 'weakest link' after all or been 'eliminated'! Anyway, i am back on strong now and have had OJ and Grapefruit juice throughout the day. Was just a little setback and i will continue through the weekend!! You guys all did great and are doing great--it is not EASY as we all know and any break we give our bodies is wonderful. So cheers to you all! I ordered Alissa's book and she said 4 to 10 days so my new goal is to hang in there till i get her book and can then maintain raw after the fast. :)

Thanks Corky! I just sent a PM to Curtis and I was saying to him how I feel like I DO want to continue on through the weekend. I mean, I really love how I was beginning to feel...I just got tired of that juice! But my spiritual side was benefiting as well as my health and those two things are more important than the temporary satisfaction of eating...so, despite looking very wishy-washy at this time, I think I'm gonna go ahead and pick up where I left off first thing in the morning and stick this thing out through the weekend. I know I need this...I KNOW I need this!

You can do it!! You can do it!! Last time i did a juice fast not only did i feel better than i ever have--was my first one and i did it in July, but none of my pants were tight--the weight just melted right off my tummy!! I loved it--and only 7 days! It wasn't like i was starving--i was just breaking that habit. Like Alissa said, we are all doing this for ourselves ultimately AND we have all done great already so we need to take pride in that! My neighbor couldn't make it past day 1 so i think the support here has really helped out.
Cheers to you all and lets look at the bigger picture that we want to continue to increase our raw foods. THAT in itself is so huge and this site has been sooooo good for me and all the pointers and feelings i can read and nod my head through. Just Rawsome!

OK, folks, day three and going strong. Bought a ton of fruit today. Plan to go the 7 days, but like Alissa said, I'm taking it one day at a time! :) I've told myself I want to go till I've lost 10 lbs, but at least 7 days, and I've lost 5 already. Wow! Most importantly, though, raw food sounds so good, and I don't have any desire for cooked food. I wanted to do this as a jumpstart to getting back to 100% raw, and I think it's working. Whenever I start to get hungry, all I can think about are banana chips and almond butter that someone posted the other day!

Curtis, apple and pear sounds great - I've been craving pears, and they're not usually my favorite fruit. Wonder what's in them?

Good morning Melanie you are doing great!
I found this online about Pears. Have a nice day. :)

Vitamins, nutrients and Phytonutrients - Oh my!

The following information is based on USDA Nutrition Facts for one pear serving - a medium-size pear weighing 166 grams or about the size of an average adult fist.
A medium pear provides 4 grams of dietary fiber, of which 41% is pectin.
Fiber:
Pears are a good source of natural dietary fiber. One pear will give you 16% of your recommended daily allowance of fiber.
Fiber contains no calories, and is a necessary element of a healthy diet as it helps sustain blood sugar levels and promotes regularity.
Pectin is a type of soluble fiber that binds to fatty substances in the digestive tract and promotes their elimination. This seems to help lower blood cholesterol levels. Soluble fiber also helps regulate the body's use of sugars.
Studies indicate that diets high in fiber may reduce the risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer.
Vitamin C:
Fresh pears are a good source for Vitamin C. One fresh pear contains 10% of the RDA for Vitamin C (also called ascorbic acid).
Vitamin C
is an essential antioxidant for normal metabolism and tissue repair, and helps prevent free radical damage (destructive by-products of the body's metabolic process). Vitamin C promotes healing of cuts and bruises and helps guard against a number of infectious diseases.
Fresh pears are packed with potassium, enjoy one before or after a workout!
Potassium:
Fresh pears offer 6% of the recommended daily allowance (210 mg of potassium) per serving.
The mineral Potassium is an important electrolyte needed for proper heart, nerve and muscle function. It also helps regulate water and electrolyte levels as well as helps maintain carbohydrate and protein metabolism.

I had apple juice with a half an lemon just to see what it would taste like :)
Not bad. After jumping in the shower had a glass of carrot juice. Hmm I think I could live off of carrot and orange juice :D Felt pretty good this morning and whated to share something that excited me. I have read before that when one goes on a fast within a few days your tongue is white coated because of detox. Well I finally noticed that this morning!

Curtis, the red bell pepper could have been left out as far as I'm concerned. It works in SOME juices, but this particular one I think I would have enjoyed MUCH more without it! It was okay and very palletable, but next time I'll nix it!

Hi Everyone,
Lunch time for me and I had carrot, spinach, celery and a small pc of onion. lol the onion gave it some heat!

Alissa or anyone can I have some advice on breaking a 7 day fast? Going to complete one week then end on Monday morning. Thanks for any sugestions.

Rawkinlocs
10-29-2004, 06:11 PM
still here...had a "slight diversion" but I'm not quitting! Taking Alissa's advice and keeping on and not giving it much energy. Prior to that, I had some of the "lemonade" from Alissa's book and it was very good.

I just had some oj. It was kinda tart for me, so I juiced some grapes and added it to the oj and it sweetened it right up nicely without disturbing the orange flavor.

Tomorrow will be even better!

lol must be nice Raw to work at home. :D
You are on here everytime I logged in. :) Evening all had apple and pear juice for dinner tonight, doing quite well and should have no problem making a week. This has been quite a learning experience for me and a lot easier with all the encouragement here. Thank you Alissa for starting this thread for support. :)

yeah Curtis...working from home is da bomb :D

But again, I'm not always actually ON when you see me logged in, I just stay logged in most times and sometimes I'm not even on the computer. One time my computer was logged on all night! I wonder what went through folks minds then? LOL!

I digress though...I'm sitting here eating a banana. I think I'm gonna go on ahead and bow out gracefully. I DID learn a lot from this though and like Alissa said, next time I will go even LONGERRRRR!!!!

Congrats to all of you who are still holding on and hangin in there...you're an inspiration to us all.

See ya 'round the boards!

Hey team!! Well i went all excited to get my new Jack Lalanne juicer because i bought all these veggies--but the ferry didn't make the delivery!! Thats Ok, i will go get my box of organic oranges i thought--well those didn't come either--well, unless i start stomping my greens, i have NO JUICE! So i decided that i will be happy with what i have done. See you on the boards and great work! We do our bodies good!!

Hi guys, great for you! Whenever you feel is the best time to break it is, i would say definitely listen to that. Its better to go off slow then to "fall off" and go wild!
Curtis, just go slow, the best thing to do is eat a mono diet, just fruit or veggies, one thing at a time, not combined for a day or two...
Eat a banana, eat some grapes, eat a pear... the next day same mono meals maybe a light salad... the idea is to give your digestive system a chance to start working again without being bombarded!
I may just do 7 days also, it s k now but i have a bunch of events and things and work is intense right now, so we'll see.
You are all doing (and did) great though/ it really is nice to do it with people for the support....

Curtis
10-29-2004, 10:33 PM
Okay thanks Alissa I will do that. After a day or 2 I will add salads and soups to. lol I just bought new pants 2 weeks ago, now these are getting loose :)
Been using your recipes and now I think it is time to follow your 4 week plan closely for a month to continue learning. I have a few things still in my diet I want to go ahead and let go of and doing the 4 week plan will help me do that.
Night all see ya tomm

Day four yesterday and did fine. Actually woke up not feeling too hungry, but I thought I should have something, so I made some OJ. Then I didn't feel like having anything again until 2:30 - very strange for me!! Sadly, I made some pineapple-tangerine juice, usually one of my favorites, and I accidentally threw one of the tangerine pieces in there with the skin still on. Ruined the whole thing. I tried to sweeten it with more fruit, but it was so bitter I couldn't drink it. Good thing I wasn't hungry or I'd have been a bear about that! LOL

Day five now and a little hungrier but still not as much as the first three days. I guess it's true what they say about your hunger going away.

Hi Guys! (thanks Magnolia!)

So, it's Saturday morning, I'm planning on joining you...is anyone staying in the game?

Breaking the fast...what worked GREAT for me, and I didn't gain ANY weight back: day one, eat 1 kind of fruit for breakfast, have more juice during the day, and a small salad with just a little olive oil for dinner

day two: follow day one...keep juices in your diet but slowly replace juice with solid food. Nothing dehydrated yet, and NO nuts.

Keep going this way for 4-5 days before you add anything really dense in like nuts or dehydrated stuff.

That's how I broke my 21 day fast, since yours was shorter you might be able to transition a little quicker.

Y'all have done GREAT!!!

Hi Guys,

Its sunday. Day one for me. I just had a delicious mix of one whole juiced pineapple and 4 pears. It was about 40 oz. DELICIOUS!. I bought 3 cases of organic valencias on Friday. I will probably have some sort of veggie(yuck)/fruit (tomato, cukes) mix this afternoon, then finish the day with OJ. This is great! You are are doing soooo Wonderfly! I am so proud of all of you. See vegbaby, I told you day four would be easy. Its like you almost feel guilty for NOT being real hungry. I like smashy's description of breaking the fast. That has been a problem for me. But I have prayed, planned and will fight to make sure that my finish goes smoothly next week, by God's grace.

Good morning everyone!
I had apple, pear,oj juice for breakfast. I think with this evenings meal will break my fast. Thanks for all advice in breaking it.
lol I love me parents but my mom being a nurse looks at me from that view. Over the last few months I have been slowly losing weight with diet changes and eating more natural food. I went to see my folks last week and haven't been there for a month. Well of course as you lose weight it comes off your face and neck first. Well the first thing my mom said is your losing weight to fast. :) I reminded her I haven't seen them for over a month and I am doing fine.
I really have no concerns about this because what I have learned so far is the body will get rid of excess weight then zero in on it's perfect weight after that. Still amazes me if we eat what God intended everything else will fall into place. :)
Anyway everyone have a great day!

Hiya Curtis,

You are doing great! How much weight have you lost? I have noticed the same thing, it seems to show on the face and neck first. Is today the 7th day of the fast? Be careful in breaking it, I would advise fresh fruit (have several pieces) but no nuts, seeds or (God forbid  ) nothing cooked.

Peace.

Hey everyone, been offline for a couple days, but I wanted to drop in and let you know that I did five days. On the evening of the 5th day I was battling huge cravings, but I went to bed and hoped it would subside by the morning. It was Sunday and traditionally the hardest day for me to be raw because my husband often cooks family favorites, plus we were having company for dinner, so...I decided to stop my fast. Ate fruit the whole day, then salad for dinner. The great thing is that I'm now back on the 100% raw wagon and feeling great!! Lost 7 1/2 lbs. total, and I can't believe my skin. yay!

Yes I do feel better. I learned a big lesson doing this, that most of us have been controlled by food all our lives.:)
I giving some serious thought to water fasting one day a week for better health.

Great job, Curtis! Don't you feel great?

Day 3 is in the books. Going good so far. I have been able to keep up with my workouts as well. I am drinking ALOT of juice. Today between breakfast, lunch and dinner I had 168oz. I feel great though. I actually jogged a mile and a half today.

Well, today is Day 5. I am doing great and feeling great. I have decided to end the juice fast on Saturday instead of Sunday because I don't want it to interfere with my regular Monday water fast. I feel like if I end the juice fast on Sunday, just to start a water fast after, I may be setting myself up for trouble in terms of breaking the fast. So I will break this one slowly on Saturday with fruit and some crushed nuts. Then Sunday with fruit and a salad. But this has been a blast for sure. I have found juicing a fresh pineapple with some pears is DELICIOUS! I have also used fresh organic valencias quite abit as well. Its so freeing to have your appetite controlled by the higher powers of the mind instead of the lower powers of the stomach!

Peace.

Thank you all for being so very supportive. This is day 6 (the last day). This has not been that difficult. I have come to understand why the water fast is the most effective....its much more intense. The juice fast is great though, not as intense but still good enough to clear the mind and body and get the appetite under control. One of these days though I am going to do a 10 day water fast. Maybe in connection with a juice fast (one after the other). Experimentation, I am learning, is a big part of the raw journey! Experimentation on oneself:).

I was going to do a 14 day water fast once after reading some fasting book and after day 2.5 I woke up in the middle of the night extremely nauseous and weak. After about 30min of pondering what to do and feeling horrible and thinking this is just nasty detox go to sleep, it was horrible. So I got myself downstairs barely and was juicing oranges on the floor i was so weak! Anyway, had a big glass of OJ and was fine within minutes. I then continued for another 5 days on just OJ and was great and never weak again. I just didn't know how much to push myself and i know they say do it under doctor's care but i just did it. Any thoughts on what i experienced? And it IS much more intense than the juice fasting lol!

Hi Rawjojo,
I went to my local health food store because I saw that they sell organic produce and asked them. They order organic produce anyways so I figured this would just produce added volume discounts for them and cheaper prices for me. They are very efficient because I only need to call them one day in advance. If my local health food store wasn't able to help me I would probably go to the local supermarket for the same reason. Just talk to the manager and explain that you are a raw vegan who consumes alot of fruit. Thats what I did anyways. :D . I hope this helps you.

Todd

Hiya Corky,

It was definitely detox. Its more intense during a water fast. Also, since you have no nutrients coming into your body, the body starts taking them from itself. It begins eating away at the waste, then the fat which is why a person would feel very weak. I am planning on doing my 10 day waterfast when I have some time to take off (maybe during the holidays). One would need to be able to rest and take it easy because of the weak feeling that would come at times.

Todd
