Anyone else a fan of this recipe? It never disappoints me! It really is a very convicing imitation of refried beans, taste wise. My only complaint is its paleness, which is a turn off for SAD eaters used to cooked refried beans. Anyways, great recipe :D .
2 cups sunflower seeds, soaked
2/3 cup flax seed oil
2 tsp. ground cumin
sea salt, to taste
Blend, blend blend away in your vitamix until super smooth. It is best to start with cold ingredients as the vitamix tends to heat up when blending something so thick. You can add a little water to get it to blend, but tastes better if you don't.

thanks for posting this! i was just thinking about it last night and today wondering if there's a raw recipe since bean and cheese burritos is my fav cooked food thing to eat.

one question though... that seems like a lot of flax seed oil. isn't that like an overdose to eat all at once? i'm just basing on the bottles recommendations to take x amount a day. and i've only consumed about 3 tbl spoons a day tops so i have no experince with eating a ton of it in a day and how i'd feel.

This is a big recipe. If you eat 1/4 of the recipe, you will get about 2.5 tablespoons of flax seed oil and your bean fix ;) .

This is one of my FAVORITE recipes although I tend to add a TON more cumin and some chili powder. I LOVE it. The chili powder makes it darker too... just an FYI. :D

Would this taste okay with, say, olive oil instead of flax? *Ü*

I just tried this and it's really good. And I'll admit I had bought organic canned refreied beans a few weeks ago lol. I didn't soaked the seeds but rather added a bit of water to compensate and I also added chili powder and tabasco sauce.

Thanks

I always avoided mexican food as it was all cheese and carbs, but what would be good to eat this with?

You don't have to add oil! :D I never do.

I just soak the sunflower seeds in water overnight, drain, rinse and throw in the food processor with org garlic powder, org cumin powder and org chili powder. If it's a little too thick, I just add a little water. I add lots of chili powder so the color is authentic to actual refried pinto beans. So good!

If it's too pale for you, just add more chili powder or red bell pepper. I love Rawstrength's suggestion in a later post about mixing in avacado.

This sounds really good to me right now--and it's one of my favorite ways to use sunflower seeds.

I have this awesome raw corn chip recipe!

4 cups corn
3/4 cups sunflower seeds (soaked overnight)
1/3 cup flax seed, ground

Add the following ingredients to your taste:
cumin
salt
red pepper flakes or powder
red onion

smooth mixture onto dehydrating sheets and dehydrate until one side is dry, flip over mixture and dehydrate until crispy. When done, keep in an airtight container or zip lock and keep in fridge. They stay really crispy if refrigerated.

Tip: I score little triangles or make round tortillas as I first spread the mixture on.
