I think that they need to be soaked probably for 4 hours

WOW! It's been a long time since I've seen unshelled hempseeds. ;) Can't get those in the U.S., at least not legally.

seriously? why wouldn't they be legal? is there something in them i should know about? i don't want to hallucinate from my morning smoothie! haha.
in the past i've always just picked up hemp seeds from the hfs. the only kind they have are shelled are in smaller pieces. but then i found a great deal from a place in BC. so i bought 1lb to try. should i somehow unshell them? or are the shells ok to eat??

Our government doesn't want us sprouting any of those.
All the hempseeds, powder, and oil I have in the house are products of Canada! Buy stock now!

The US Dept of Agriculture doesn't want "just anyone" being able to grow hemp.
Currently, it requires a special license (with a mind-boggling amount of paperwork, hearings, red tape, MONEY) to grow it. Therefore, all hemp must be unshelled, to interfere with germination.
Just be thankful the USDA doesn't require "pasturization"...

I have recently started adding hemp seeds to my diet. I downloaded an ebook from Kristen Suzanne for some recipe ideas, and she never mentioned soaking them, so I don't.
Here's a thread about whether to soak or not: http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/showthread.php?t=43024
I love to slice a banana and sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of hemp seeds on top, and then drizzle with a little honey....mmm.
The hemp seed sold for food is actually industrial hemp. Wikipedia has some interesting information on it's legal status. If we could grow it here in the US, it would probably be way cheaper.
