...I'd like to start my raw journey proper with a fast. I thought I'd do a water fast for 3 - 5 days. No reason, just plucked that off the air, then start juicing and see how far that takes me then move on to smoothies and finally get to solid food (just raw).

I've read a few threads on the board and I understand there are a number of seasoned fasters here. I also gather there are different ways of fasting - water, juice etc. Loads of fasting lingo I don't get yet but I'll ask about those as I come across them ;), so please bear with me. I hope I'm starting off okay and not setting myself up for failure, as I really want to do this. If I can stick to just water, fresh juices and raw food for 30 days, I'd call that a success. I was thinking of starting on Sunday but still preparing mentally - might be later in the week . I know it will not be easy, and I may well try for a few days and give up, but I'd love to give it a try. If I don't succeed, i'l try again - no shame in trying till I get it done! And yup, it's not just for 30 days, I hope after the first 30 days, I'll be fired up to take it further as I really, really hope it'll be a lifestyle change, not just a short time phenomenon.

My history so far:

I eat fairly healthily - fresh organic produce, cooked from scratch - though I eat LARGE amounts. Ladies, think trying to eat as much as your male partner, that's what it is. I eat almost as much as hubby eats.... and he eats loads! I've always been known to eat more than people imagine I can eat usually anyway, but I want to change that. It's not a compliment any more. It was when I could maintain a slim figure, but age is catching up and the weight has steadily been going up and up and I don't like it. I want to feel good inside and outside - why lie and say otherwise? I'm carrying 20kgs more than I should - I need to lose 44lbs:eek::eek:. These I've gained over the past 6-7 years and whilst I don't look it, I feel HUGE at 92kgs (202.4lbs). I carry it well - or so I'm told. Well, I don't want to carry it any more! The knees, ankles and other joints are starting to feel the weight too, so I need to do something before it's too late.

I'm fairly active and do on average 30 minutes exercise a day. I want to get that up. I used to do 2 hours daily but don't gym anymore - thinking of joining a gym again as truth be told, once I get a routine going, I quite enjoy myself and even look forward to my daily workouts. If I re-join and don't enjoy it, I may well just do running or invest in a trampoline and bounce on that. We have weights at home, so I could tailor a weights session for toning, bodypump style.

What else can I say about myself.....

I'm a paediatric nurse, no kids of my own yet, have a beloved step-son and have had a myomectomy for fibroids. We are hoping to have a baby soon - undergoing tests for recurrent miscarriages. I really feel like getting a proper spring clean will help me carry a pg to term. And I want to do it healthily too. So you see, I've been thinking long and hard about this, and I'm ready to take the plunge!

Blessings to all!

Welcome Jac, I'm not sure what you are asking... if you are asking if your fasting goals seem like a good idea, I'd say yes.

A water fast is the most difficult to do - it's also the most difficult to break. You cannot... and I mean CANNOT eat on a water fast. If you do, you're body will suffer for it. HUGE. So, if you think you don't have it in you to be super strict and not cheat, then just start with juice fasting. Eating while fasting is always a bad idea (as your digestion is sleeping and restarting it with a jolt is not good) it is better than doing the same while on water only.

Here's my advice to you:

Start with 10 days of juice fasting. If you are doing great and want to continue, add in 3 days of water and then go back to juice again. You'll need to do about 3 days of juice before moving into green smoothies. So if you decide you want to fast for a shorter period of time, perhaps leave out the water fast this time around. Remember, there's always another time you can fast. ;)

Again, welcome!

Thanks Aleesha. Yes, I was asking if it was a good idea. So, you suggest juice fasting to start with, then water for a few days then juice then smoothies right?

Hmmm, I'm so obviously a novice, lol; I thought all were hard. Okay, I'll prepare myself for what you suggest and see how it goes...

oh no water is WAAAAAAAAAY harder than juice.

green smoothies is the easiest.
then juice feasting (one gallon of juice a day)
then juice fasting (less than one gallon of juice a day)
and then water fasting.

:)
so yes, wait on the water!
