View Full Version : What do you take to work to eat?

Trying to eat raw at lunch in a school cafeteria is terrible. Overall the food is pretty good, but the variety of fruit and vegetables never changes. Basically they have apples, oranges and bananas and then a salad bar with spinach, romaine, grape tomatoes, green peppers, red onions and mushrooms. After four days of only eating those things, I think I'm going to need to start bring a variety of accoutrements for my salads.

Or bring lunch all together.

So my question is, what is something that travels well that you take to work with you? I don't have a dehydrator, so I'm looking for simple things.

Let me know!

I usually end up bringing a large salad every day - romaine lettuce, cucumber, tomato, seaweed, red onion and avocado. i put my dressing of olive oil and lemon in a little jar and dress the salad before i eat it. you can also make a rubbed kale salad, which just takes a few minutes to prepare. zucchini pasta with sauce travels well. i usually have some raw crackers and spiced dehydrated nuts on hand. if you don't have a dehydrator, you can buy these items. i bring a smoothie or juice to work and some fruit. sometimes i'll pack a dessert, like chia pudding or a small piece of chocolate. you can also bring raw soups in a thermos.

Good question Reesh! I've been wondering the same thing. I like to keep it simple, but also like variety - so I've been wondering what people with busy jobs/schedules have as simple, but interesting meals away from home.

Today, I'm packing a small watermelon for lunch. A peach, plum, naval orange and walnuts will also go into the snack-bag. I like to have extras to allow me to change my mind or have enough if I'm really hungry throughout the day. Yesterday I took an apple, clementine, banana & salad.

I generally have a green smoothie for breakfast and sometimes for lunch also. Love green smoothies, but strangely, I haven't been wanting one in the past week. Hopefully I'm back to wanting smoothies soon. It's easy to make 2 large smoothies each morning with a few different ingredients.

You can probably have interesting lunch salads by bringing different ingredients to add to what's on the salad bar at work.

All great ideas guys! I am definitely going to try to make spaghetti from zucchini tonight! Sounds delicious. I used to love making zucchini parmesan before I was raw.

I have a zyliss zester that is perfect for making vermicelli from a lot of different veggies. I made butter nut squash noodles not too long ago that were fabulous.

butternut squash! that sounds amazingly intense.
I usually just bring leftovers of whatever I had for dinner. pâtés wrapped in lettuce, a slice of pie (alissa's book has several recipes that don't need to be dehydrated) etc.

They're pretty good! I think the zucchini will be another winner as well. I'll have to blend up a spinach and basil pesto sauce for it. It's making me hungry just thinking about it!

A nut/seed pate and a veggie to stuff or put it atop a salad. I love to stuff bell peppers, tomatoes, zucchini or cucumbers. Or make wraps with romaine, iceburg, cabbage, or collard leaves.

I usually take salads or wraps (I like purple cabbage wraps with marinated veggies the best) and then a variety of fruits. Sometimes I add a few cashew stuffed dates if I need something uber sweet or crackers if I think I'll need something crunchy. On days when I know I'm going to be really busy I love packing a a Tupperware container full of peeled and sectioned clementines. Then, throughout the day I just grab a handful and pop them in my mouth as I'm walking down the hall.

Today I'm taking a salad made with my first sprouted quinoa, red cabbage, cilantro, grated ginger, mung bean sprouts and pumpkin seeds. Also two bananas, a blood orange and a regular orange for snacks.

I bring smoothies or berries. Lots of berries. Cherries! finger foods :) I work the front desk for a doctors office, and I don't like taking time off for snacks, so I just pack stuff that I can pop into my mouth real quick.

Bring an avocado. You can slice it up to add to your school salad. An avocado will really dress up even the blandest salad.
Make raw trail mix to snack on.
Bring a green smoothie or fruit smoothie or superfood smoothie in a glass mason jar. Don't use any frozen ingredients in the smoothie, or any blueberries, because that can cause an icky texture as it sits in the jar.
Make your own raw foods bars by combining dried fruits and nuts/seeds in a food processor until they clump together. If you do superfood powders, you can add those in, too. Grab a fistful of the nut/seed/fruit mix, mold it into a bar, wrap in a sheet of wax paper, and you have your raw bar!
Make your food look pretty and colorful, and it is sure to attract positive attention from others. You could even turn someone on to raw food!

You might try making something to go along side your salad like spring or nori rolls. Maybe try some dehydrator breads, both savory and sweet, to mix up your lunches a bit.

A nice scoop of pate (whatever your favorite is) is always nice on a salad. Already stated, but avo is fantastic, too. When I tire of salads, I usually pack a variety of veggies that can be stuffed into wraps--collard greens are my top fav. Soups are also nice, especially in the colder weather as they can be warmed slightly to take the chill off and are usually filling.

I bring A LOT of fruit, along with one savoury dish. Tomorrow, I'm bringing 4 bananas, 2 oranges, 2 apples, 4 clementines and a pink grapefruit. I'm also bringing sunflower seed dip with carrot and celery sticks. I almost always bring some of the fruit home with me at the end of the day, but it makes me feel better to have too much with me, just in case I get extra hungry.

I have to eat while I'm driving for my work (mail carrier), so I make it easy...usually the carrot-pecan burgers, more recently potato pancakes, raw "brownies" I think they call them, and peel and pull apart clementines or oranges or grapefruit and put them in a baggie or container that's easy to get to. I usually can't finish everything I bring.

I'm a bury my post in the back here!

There is a grocery store 2.5 blocks from the job. I go there and buy produce. I can get some excercise, solar vitamin D, food, and work off the first half of the day's frustrations during my lunch break. Also it keeps folks from asking me to do additional work since they know my diet and my schedule.

I pack bento boxes! Not all the times, just the days that I know for sure that I won't be able to go back home, I live just one block away from my school. You can see them in my blog, there are just a couple of them, but it is a lot of fun to try to make something different each week.
