View Full Version : A better alternative?

I don't give my son pop but his dad (and the paternal grandparents) does....don't even get me started on the other crap they feed him! However, I just came across this:

PepsiCo is poised to launch two new softdrinks sweetened with stevia in the US. They are waiting for the green light by the FDA over its GRAS status.

SoBe Life Water and Trop 50 are ready to hit the market as soon as the FDA sends a letter of no objection for the natural, zero-calorie sweetener to be used in food and beverages.

And more stevia products could be in the pipeline, according to Massimo D’Amore, CEO PepsiCo Americas Beverages.

D’Amore, said he was confident that the files submitted will receive no objection and added: “The moment the FDA approves it and gives us authorization to launch it under GRAS, we are ready to launch the first three zero-calorie, naturally flavored flavors of SoBe Life Water.

“We are ready to go the moment we get the green light.”

If it gets to Canada, I wonder what else will be in it and if perhaps I can say to them 'buy this' as a healthier alternative? One can only hope!

Has anyone else heard about this?

Haven't heard about it but if there is a way to Flip it up, they will find it and when you see "Stevia" on the Labes, it will be the name of the Guy who made it.

hopefully it will be only sweetened with stevia and won't be sweetened with stevia AND something that they're not making a fuss about(artificial sweetener etc). I wouldn't put it past Pepsico...

Oh yeah, you can bet a body part if the FDA has approved Stevia, it will be "laced" with sh*t. Sorry, but it's not gonna be good for one's health. They are out to make money. Plain and simple!

That's what I figure....I'm hoping though! Then again, with the trouble I've had with the ex in-laws giving my son garbage (even when specifically asked not to!) there's no guarantee I could get them to give him a healthier alternative anyway...they're the whole reason he started drinking pop....gave it to him when he was TWO!

Interesting item to keep my eye on though...

I had read an article on this and my understanding was that it was not a WHOLE stevia product but only extracting one component of stevia and there is no telling what the affect when you remove only part of something, so I guess the jury's still out but my general rule is that if the FDA is approving it ... well, let's not go there. And as far as soda goes the sweetener is definitely not the only consideration phosphoric acid, artificial colors, etc. NO GOOD. There is even a public school here in GA that has removed sugar (including soda) from the campus and they are seeing better grades and less behavior issues. Good luck with your situation I know dealing with resistant family can be a pain.

I know this won't be that helpful, but we have a product here in Australia called Fuze.

It's basically carbonated fruit juice with no artificial colours, flavours, preservatives or added sugar. Would there be a similar thing where you are?

My son's dad gives this to him on occasion as a soft drink (or pop) replacement.

I still think it's yuck, but it's a huge leap better than soft drink.

When I want soft drink, I get out the sparkling natural mineral water we collect and store from a spring in our favourite holiday town and put fresh fruit juice in it.

we don't do soda, but when i have my nephew here he is a conventional eating kid, so i try to make him some things that are somewhat like what he has at home.

so, soda is one of them. we do izze's. it is fruit juice and carbonated water i believe. they do taste really good and they aren't overly sweet. the other option is poland springs carbonated water with orange, lime or lemon flavors. i used to do gerolsteiner with natural pomegranate syrup in it for myself. jarrow formulas, a supplement manufacturer, makes a great syrup.

good luck!
