I see everyone recommends coffee grinders for grinding flax seed and flour etc. When looking for coffee grinders I see there are lots of different kinds. Does it matter? I would really rather get the least expensive and save my money for a Vitamix.

i grind flax / sesame / almond / etc in my cheap blender just fine .
i just keep using short pulse after short pulse . i pulse it , then let it all settle to bottom and pulse again , over and over til done . trick is not to pulse it to long each burst because to me with nothing in the blender to offer blade resistance its hard on motor if ran too long . but thats just my guess .
anyway ive been doing this 3 years with my cheap blender and its still great .

and if a blender company knew what it was doing itd include a cap type thing to insert in blender in order to make the pitcher only about 4" high in order to make a small compartment where in seeds etc are kept right into the blades so they grind up in one short burst such as does the mini blender a coffee grinder is . at times ive made stoppers to fit down into blender to shrink the compartment for seed grinding . a plastic tall glass with a dish towel draped over its top then inserted towel first into blender , the towel stops seed dust from coming up and out around cup edges .

hmm. I need to buy a new blender, but I will try it. I tried it in my food processor and no luck with the flax seeds. I think my almond flour came out okay, it is not as fine as regular flour but it is pretty fine..,.

yes my almonds for almond milk dont grind that fine with the pulse method .
but when i use the glass and towel stopper method to shrink the blender pitcher to a smaller coffee grinder like size the grind up fine because the blender becomes just like a coffee grinder that way . but it canbe a pain sometimes when the powder flies out from the sides of the home made stopper .

ide also say use the search option for coffee grinder discusion .

I just use one of those small coffee grinders, usually cost about $10-$12. Does the trick.
