Hey everyone! I'm pretty new to this site and to raw. I've been very high raw for the last few days, and I have to say, you crazy raw people ( :p ) are right! Eating raw = tons of energy. I love it. I also love this site! All the recipes people have been posting sound fantastic and this seems like a wonderful place to come for support and to make new friends. I also have Alissa's book on order and can't wait for it. I was thinking I'd wait until after the holidays to do a 30-day raw challenge, but after seeing some of the holiday recipes posted on this site, I don't think I'll have to wait. (I'm vegan anyway, so I always have to bring my own food to holiday gatherings already. Might as well bring raw!)
Okay - back to my original point. Why aren't all olives raw, and how do I know when purchasing olives which brands are raw?
Thanks in advance! Lisa

Welcome Lisa! First off, olives are usually packed in a can and thus heat treated....therefore "NOT RAW". I just asked Alissa about raw olives and she said there are several sites that sell them. She will be selling them very soon. I'm waiting for hers. That's about the extent of my knowledge re: olives and that's only because Alissa just answered that question for me!

Also most olives are soaked in vinegar...not raw.
I have raw olives I've ordered from eatraw and rawfood and they are great! I soak them in my own brine when they arrive so they're salty. Raw olives are very different...bitter, rich, comfort food (as CC says). They are really good!

Ooh - raw olives are pricey. I'll have to order some today though. I can't not have olives!

They sure do add a rich flavor to a big green salad. YUM!!

Yep! I think I could live on olives and avocados alone.

Hey, another new person on the board from Minnesota. Our home is in Cass Lake, near Bemidji, though we live in Mongolia right now. Welcome!

Thanks everyone!
Melanie - I spent all of my childhood summers in Cass Lake! We have a cabin now sort of nearby - outside of Backus. Why are you in now in Mongolia - I bet there's a very interesting story there!

Smasty...I am so embarrassed :o . I bought a jar of peruvian olives from a raw website. I soaked them in celtic sea salt and purified water as per the instructions. I actually forgot about them for two months. When I finally tasted them..they were bitter to me and I thought something was wrong with them and threw them out! What a waste....Thanks for sharing the information.
P.S. I love the positive energy of this website (which has to be due to the positive energy of Alissa).

Hey Smileen! Raw olives are very different--huh. I really didn't know what to expect when I first tried them. Sometimes I miss the vinegar-y taste of traditionally packed olives, but the raw olives are much richer I think. 3-4 raw olives satisfy my where I could eat 1/2 a jar of vinegar-packed olives. They have to be salted though (imho)...it's the only thing I have to satisfy the salt cravings I get every few days.
CC (where are you CC??) used raw olives (unsalted) in her raw chocolate recipe to mimic the bitterness of dark chocolate.
HEY! Welcome, btw!!! We're glad to have you here!

Thank you, Smasty! Great to be here. By the way, how long do you think the olives stay fresh?
Thanks again!

Had to share with you that I placed an order from a raw website and was not aware that there was a special "gift with order" going on. They sent me a free jar of peruvian olives! I got my olives replaced! The universe works in wonderful ways. :) :) :)

On a whim I bought some raw green olives from the farmer's market the other day. I haven't tried one yet (I'm a wuss!), but I'm thinking they aren't edible if I don't do something to them first. Right? If so, what do I need to do?
Thanks!
