Hi All
I am just starting my raw food journey. i tried making the recommeded week 1 recipes and my food processor just wouldn;t work at making the date torte base so i switch to my hand held blender and after a few minutes it was smoking. Does anyone know if I need a special blender?
Thank you XX

It seems you need a powerful blender to do the trick. At least 700 watts or more. There is an Oster Fusion that has 1000 watts or you could save up money and get VitaMix or Blendtec

Same with Food Processor, must be 600 watts or more to cut it. I love my Kitchen Aid

I agree the Vita-Mix is a Work Horse although I have never make the Date Torte.

I've made the date torte with just a regular food processor ...... try soaking your dates, which will make it easier on your food processor. When they ask you to use a blender in recipes, they are not talking about a hand held blender. It's the type with blades and a container that you put on a base.

thanks everyone. I will look into gettin one that isn;t as expensive as the vitamix but will do the job. I started off with the proper processor but switched to the handheld when it wouldn't work!Until then I will just eat simple - I can probably do without making hte fancy recipes - which i think i would overeat anyway cos they seem sooooo yummmy.
Thanks

I really, really, really want to get a Vita-Mix. I noticed that they have a 3 payment plan to make purchasing easier. Right now I am saving the 1/2 you need to pay up front to get on the payment plan. I currently am using a Health Master 100 which I love - but I think I can do so much more with a Vita-Mix. If I get the Vita-Mix I will probably take my Health Master 100 to work so I can have fresh smoothies while I'm at work! :)

I haven't done the torte yet but you can't do that in any blender, even a blendtec or vitamix. This is a job for a food processor. What was the problem with doing it in a food processor? It could be as simple as you need to stop and scrape the sides. But you can't do the torte in any blender at all, it's a job for a food processor only (at least the base).

I was watching Victoria Boutenko do a heavy dried fruit and nuts dish and she added coconut oil to make it chop smoothly. :)
You make the date nut torte in the fp. The vitamix would blend it too much and it would probably be too thick for the vitamix anyway. It does take a few minutes for dried fruits to soften and break down in the processor. If any of it sticks to the sides just stop and scrape them with a spatula. The processor will slightly warm up a bit but not hot enough to kill the enzymes. I love the date nut torte when its slightly warm from the processor.

Vita-Mix also sells reconditioned machines with the same warranty. I read Alissa's book last week and got so excited that I went to VM and purchased a 5200. Now, to only get started Raw and to use it.

The VitaMix can't handle certain heavy mixtures as well as food processors. Even after soaking medjool dates, my Vita Mix couldn't hold up to processing the dates w/nuts. I added additional water, etc., but the motor shut off (which is a safety mechanism within the machine. So, I'm still needing to buy a food processor to make LaraBars, etc. (And yes, I did buy the machine with the 'dry chop container'.) Really thick, sticky mixtures are better done on food processors.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my Vita Mix in spite of this though! It is quite the work horse & I use it multiple times per day! It is so well worth every dime I spent on it! :o)
My vitamix processes soaked dates just fine. I make Alissa's lemon pudding in mine with no probs!!

Hi Clairey,
Had you considered gettting one of the refurbished Vita-mixers? I purchased a VM yearssss ago and returned it when I needed some money (double duh). Anywho, I finally got another one about three weeks ago and I will not part with it.
Just a thought re. the refurbished model. I just hate to see anyone (who wants) a Vita-Mix not have one.
Namaste,

I'd like to know where one can find the Date Nut Torte recipe everyone is talking about here???
I'm still learning and experimenting myself. I just have a Blend-tec and tried making a simple pate last night. It contained a cup of soaked almonds, a cup of walnuts, a large red bell pepper, scallions and 2 ribs of celery. The blender was suffering! I now am convinced I need a food processor to make everything I want.

I don't see where anyone has recommended any certain type of Food Processor except one for a Kitchen Aide.
What type of Food Processor would you recommend? In the market. MY Kenmore died on raw foods.

Oh yeah! Hands down. Cuisinart! I had bought a Hamilton Beach 14 cup bigmouth? Within two years - it was busted. So....treated myself to the Cuisinart! LOVE IT! Way better (easier) to clean than the HB.
I'd say, get the Cuisinart.

I just ordered my dates today from The Date People. The owner, Jaime, called me back the same day, and patiently explained the differences between the variety he carries. I can't wait to get my order and make that torte! Thanks for showing me the way to the recipe.
