According to this blog anyway, and it's raw vegan!

Has anyone heard about and/or tasted these cheeses yet? They are available at Pure Food and Wine among other places. You New Yorkers are so lucky!

I got the link from a vegan forum I frequent, had a look through not realising it was raw then almost choked on my cinnamon scroll when I saw that it was!

Someone tell me what it tastes like!

That's interesting! I've made fake cheeses using agar agar and adding brewers yeast, nuts and other spices, it turns out like a jello. I've also made cheese sauce by making a gravy and adding brewers yeast and other spices. These cheeses are all cooked of course.

But the addicting thing about cow's milk cheese is not it's taste, it is the casein. Casein becomes morphine-like after it is digested - cheese lovers are just morphine addicts. So no cheese, even if it tastes like cow's milk cheese, is going to give the same buzz or completely fill the void left by dropping cheese from the diet.

I've seen this ad before but I agree with RAWmiss, there is NO fake cheese that taste like cow's cheese, although I have never tasted this. It does have it's followering....Thanks for Sharing.

thanks for this link! I am such a cheese lover and I heard of this website (dr.cow) just recently.. so I think I will order some from them.. but they aren't selling until February again I believe.

I hope they will sell just to people alone and not just to restaurants.

thanks again!

I respect it I just can't afford it, lol.. It's $23 per pint, plus shipping.. :) Maybe someday when I can afford to splurge I can try it.. :D:D

I hear you, but it's worth the splurge to me. If you make a list of all of your expenses and income, I bet you will see some holes in there where you're wasting money. Like me for example, getting rid of netflix and the landline phone which I never use anymore....and other wasteful expenditures. I had a yard sale, uploaded old CD's into the ipod & sold them to local music stores that buy used, carded my still hip & funky outfits to consignment shops. etc, etc, etc. When I adjusted my expenditures, then I had the "splurge cash"...more than I could ever imagine. :D If you look, you will find it. Sort of like the line from Field of Dreams - "if you build it, they will come". LOL. I'm in a joking - happy mood this morning. Must be the super green smoothie I enjoyed.

LOL.. I drank a super green smoothie too.. :D I think I'm feeling the same happiness, lol.. Okay.. guess I will have to start making a "cheese fund", lol.. and I do have TONS of CD's that we don't even listen to anymore.. I wonder how much I can get for those.. they are pretty old though.. hey, every little bit helps right? BUT.. hmm.. Netflix? Can't get rid of that.. other things yes, but I love my Netflix.. :D:p

I'm doing great! On Day 14 of my 3rd MC. :D Hope you're going well too!

I def wanna see what the current flavors of cheeses and ice creams that Alissa has available. I LOVE the habenero cheese and have no more of it, so need to make an order asap!

I raise my green smoothie glass to your glass in solidarity. I just made another one. I put maca & cacao in this one...watch out! haaaa.

Anyway, you will get a pretty penny for those CD's. There is someone out there who collects them and if the buyer in the store is wise he will know a good deal. I kept the collector's item CD's and sold the rest. I think I got $175 for them. I had a lot.

I got rid of Netflix, because my local library carries a huge selection of DVD's and also gets the new releases fairly regularly. Not on the level of netflix but good enough for me. I can keep up to 8 at a time. ALL FOR FREE. :D

If you look, you will find that extra cash. wink-wink

alright....back to the cheese. don't want to hijack the thread. sorry OP.

Woo hoo! Have a great MC. Glad you're doing well. I think I'm going to order some next week. I've been eating pretty simply, but all of this talk of cheese is sparking a raw food craving.

I can't wait to try Alissa's cheese... one day. But there is a minimum order of 4 pints at $23 each plus shipping charges of $66. That's a total on the order of $158, about $40 a pint.

On a pint basis with shipping and handling, Dr. Cow is more expensive, around $50 a pint. However, I can buy less and I've tasted Dr. Cow. It is out of this world and the aged cashew is unlike anything I've ever been able to do at home. (For me, that's the key; I won't buy something I can make.) It actually has sliceable consistency and a sharp cheddar flavor.

So unless I can find a group of Chicago area friends who want to split an order of Alissa's cheese so I can try just one pint, it'll have to wait.

Also, I believe in the theory of abundance. The more people buying raw vegan cheeses, the stronger the market becomes for everyone!

Very true. Let's hope we don't have to wait too long. :)

I didn't even know Alisaa sold cheeses! Sorry if I offended anyone, but I was just so excited at the thought of a raw vegan cheese that I just had to share.

I like cultured foods for the taste and health benefits, once the addiction part of cheese is out of the way, emulating it is simpy adding another taste and texture to the raw palate, and I'm a big fan of variety!

And I'd love to see raw vegan cheese pop up all around the world, so I'll be supporting anyone who makes it! :)

After reading this very thread the other day, I decided to try some of the raw vegan cheeses recommended. My first order was to The Vegan Store for their raw cashew cheese.

I was very humored when my UPS brought my package (the very next day - I was impressed with that) to the door. I'm attempting to attach a picture of the product in comparison to the packaging.

After 5 minutes (literally) of ripping, unwrapping and disassembling what was basically a cardboard, paper and styrofoam version of a Matryoschka doll, here is what my vegan treasure amounted to:

Can anyone else appreciate the irony of the cruelty-free, earth-friendly's store's method of packaging??

Oh no! No offence taken. I just posted it as I didn't think everyone was aware. It doesn't mean that you have to buy it either. I probably should've worded my post better.

LOL...that is very funny. But a bit nuts too. I'm just picturing the person wrapping it up. What was going through their mind? haaaaa. At least you can recycle some of the material or reuse the box for your own packaging.

The cheese was "meh." It wasn't disgusting, but I wasn't impressed. It looked nothing like the pictures they have on the web site, and the consistency is sort of like nougat. I will try Alyssa's next.

I do wonder if the person who packed the item was going for humor. It is funny when you think about it, but should the item have gone elsewhere, who knows where the styrofoam and plastic might have ended up. I've already had the stuff taken to be recycled. :D

All in all, good experience. I appreciate anything that gives me a laugh.

I know you said earlier that you ordered the cheese from The Vegan Store but did it happen to be made by dr. cow?? or was it a different brand? I was planning on trying the the dr. cow but if it's no good I don't think I will.

thanks!

It is the Dr. Cow brand from The Vegan Store. It wasn't bad. But it surely didn't taste like cheese. However, I don't think it was reasonable for me to expect it to taste just like cheese. The price and the amount is not bad, so I would recommend buying the 2.6 ounces and trying it out. :)
