there are no raw peanut butters. there are issues with raw peanuts and mold and most peanuts are heated. some raw stores do sell "raw jungle peanuts," though, which are good.

Peanut Butter Rest In Peace

Next to bread, that was one of the harder foods for me to give up.

I even tried buying raw peanuts in the shell - and then shelling them myself and mashing them into peanut butter. Only did that once - truly raw peanut butter doesn't taste very good. You're not missing anything.

Okay, thanks, that answered my next question. I adore peanut butter and apples..... not so sure they will be the same with almond butter?

which brings me to my next question. are walnuts raw?

does anyone out there have a good subsitute for peanut butter and apples? to me, that is the ultimate comfort food. ( other than mac and cheese!):)

Walnuts can be raw, you just have to ask about the shelling process they use. From whoever you purchase from.

Also. I have tried the Raw Jungle Peanut Butter from David Wolfes site. It was very very good. The best treat, was getting a dollop of the peanut butter and spreading it over medjool dates... OMG amazing stuff. I grew up loving regular peanut butter, I would always stick my fingers in the jar, and my mother would shriek at me later when she used it... Cuz my imprint was still there, ahah. So eating the raw jungle peanut butter def reminded me of it.

Yes, me too. I love natural peanut butter and could eat gobs of it.... I will try the one you mentioned.... also, I will try it with dates but I have to say I find it hard to believe that they can be improved upon!

So, I wonder if that means that the fresh peanut butter that I've purchased from Whole Foods in the past is not raw. While some say "roasted" others just say "peanuts, oil, salt". I was so tempted to buy some this week, but thought it might interfere with weight loss, which seems to be happening VERY SLOWLY in the past 2 weeks.

Has anyone tried Artisana's raw pecan or raw macadamia nut butters?

Rsloan, I tasted the Artisana macdamia nut butter at my naturopath's office the other day (but bought coconut butter) and think it would work with apples. I also like eating peanut butter with apples, as well as with carrot sticks.

Thanks, livin. That was my question EXACTLY about the peanut butter. The smuckers all natural says peanuts, salt and other brands say roasted peanuts.... So I ate it. ( ignorance is bliss!) But now that that question has been answered time to move on to another kind of nut butter....

I am going to try the raw jungle nuts and the macadamia nut butter. It is outrageous how expensive they are though and think I will try to get some nuts in bulk and make it myself in the food processor.

David Wolfe's Jungle Peanut butter has salt and Brazil Nut Oil, so that's why the taste must be good. Guess you can try making your own with those ingredients too.

Artisana Butters Raw: Almond, Tahini
Not 100% Raw: Cashew, Walnut, Pecan, Macadamia, because of the cashews.

I'm confused. Does that mean that cashews, like peanuts, that are advertised as "raw" are not really 100% raw? Same with pecans?

I just bought 1/2 pound "raw" cashews from Whole Foods yesterday and
I was planning to buy the pecan butter on my next trip to my naturopath's office.

I looked at the ingredients on Artisana's Macadamia/Cashew Butter at rawfoodworld.com. Here's what it says:

The Macadamias used in Artisana Organic Raw Macadamia/Cashew Butter are from the tropical and misty Hawaiian and Australian coastlines. They are 100% organic and 100% raw.

Ingredients: Organic, Raw Macadamia Nuts, Organic, Raw Cashew Nuts

Notably absent: pesticides, artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, stabilizers, added oils, GMO's.

Contains absolutely no Peanuts, Gluten, or Dairy

Oil separation occurs naturally; stir before serving.

I agree....I made raw peanut butter and it's really something I won't ever try again. Now almond is wonderful.

I've spoken with Artisana directly and those were the ones they said weren't raw. Cashews are rarely raw. They need to be hand-shelled because the shell is toxic. Most nuts are hard to find truly raw.

This might help...I also love and miss peanut butter...I have found that raw brazil nuts add a kind of "roasted" taste to any nut butters they are mixed with. I'm currently using a pumpkin seed/brazil nut butter that I made myself and it's quite good. I've also put brazil nuts with cashews and macadamias to make blended nut butters. If you don't make your own, definitely try one of the blends with brazil nuts mentioned above. It might be just the thing.

(Another good thing about brazil nuts is that by themselves they make a very liquidy nut butter, but added to cashews or almonds, which just go powdery in my Champion, they make the nut "flour" into nut butter with just the right consistency. I usually do half and half.)

About the apples and peanut butter...I eat banana and almond butter and just marvel at the banana pudding flavor I get. If I want to put some almond butter with an apple, I add sea salt to the almond butter to get that sweet/salty balance.
